Dementium: The Ward
Review by SamFisherDS
"A great game to play if you're a horror survival fan."
Some people complain that the game's too short but I say this much is amazing, given how small the team is. It's good in all areas and will certainly keep you busy. It's not perfect but the minor blemishes are overpowered by the positives about the game.
Gameplay: Some minor flaws are in the game but, overall, it's great. I would say the only part of the game that really annoys me would be the larva enemies, they appear alot just to waste ammo and generally make life suck. Each weapon feels appropriately juiced, I just wished the sniper rifle didn't force you to stand still.
Controls: The game matches Metroid Prime Hunters in its control scheme in how effective it is. It's pretty easy to aim and run and there's not much to say about it. It's never frustrating hitting targets and, like Prime Hunters, it manages to hold up pretty well next to a keyboard and mouse.
Graphics: Amazing for a DS title, Dementium not only has incredible detail in the environments but corpses look more human than N64 titles, let alone other DS titles. The game is fully 3D, making the game a visual treat to look at and little things in the environment like blood and gore are amazing just seeing. The creatures move appropriately fluid and there's no slowdown in the game. Given how small the team is, this really exposes their talent for amazing visuals.
Sound: Equally impressive. The game, infact, gets most of its horror from the sound. They're 3D, meaning you'll be able to tell where they're coming from and making headphones practically necessary. Other things in the atmosphere, like an intercom shouting "This is an emergency, everyone must evacuate the building, locate the nearest stairwell" really add to the experience. Guns sound pretty standard which isn't bad for DS and the creatures make appropriate groaning noises. In particular, the larva enemies have a freakish sound, reminiscent of an infant crying. Overall, just as top notch as the graphics.
Overall: The game may be a little "short" and the ending disappointed a few people but that doesn't mean the game isn't very fun in its own regard. If you're a fan of survival horror and/or want to play a descent title on the DS, play it. If you've been waiting for a true horror on DS, get immediately! It's as close to a Silent Hill esque game the DS has ever achieved.
