Ultimate Mortal Kombat
Review by Relic_666
"Round 1....FIGHT"
OVERVIEW
I am a old school Mortal Kombat fan. However I never realized the joy of playing a arcade Mortal Kombat...until Ultimate Mortal Kombat. Disregard the old choppy graphics of the ported Snes, and genesis version and whip out the DS because Mortal Kombat never played so good
Graphics 8/10
The graphics are clear, crisp, and very nicely done. They seem to be more richer or lighter then the snes and genesis counter parts. However, they are the same models. I have not yet experienced a problem in this game due to graphics. All the projectile attacks look great and no animations are choppy (unlike the SNES version...ugh). Puzzle Kombat looks great and it borrows the inspiration from the original puzzle Kombat in MK Deception. The miniature 3d models move fluently and the killing looks as gruesome as ever.
Story 5/10
This is the only lacking part of the MK franchise. The story is very hard to follow from character to character. As soon as you start to play there is no introduction to the story, you fight until you go against Shao Kahn and then when you win you get to see the characters story. Although interesting to read it doesn't serve any purpose in the game and you wouldn't miss it if it wasn't there. There is no story whats so ever in Puzzle Kombat.
Game Play 9/10
The same old love them or hate them mechanics return. Running to uppercut the computer? It will counter you...ALMOST EVERY TIME. It provides a great challenging experience however it is frustrating for newer players trying to get into the game. The controls feel great on the ds, and it doesn't take long to master a characters projectile moves. Combos (once learn) can also be easily executed one they are practiced. All in all, if you have played any Mortal Kombat game before this, you know the attacks.
Replayability 10/10
For starters, the game is addicting as hell. There are 19 playable characters at the start along with a few more unlockables. Playing just to unlock them all is a great experience. Also, with Puzzle Kombat included, you get to unlock even more characters for that mode. The gem of its replayability however, comes from its WI-FI. You can fight your friends, or random people from around the world and choose any character you wish. The WI-FI adds a whole other element to the game as you strive to be the best Kombatant in the MK universe.
Rent Or Buy
Buy. Definately. Retailing at 29.99 it is well worth your money and will keep you entertained for hours upon end.
