"A commendable effort"

Call of duty 4 is what I hope will be a trend in future DS efforts, a quality game that delivers the spirit of its console big brother. Activision clearly decided not to go the lazy route when bringing this game to DS, and it shows, How often are you impressed with the production values of a DS game, not all that often, however, as a loyal DS gamer , I have become all to familiar with poor console translations in the past couple of years. Splinter cell, goldeneye, Lego starwars origional trilogy, etc. Substandard conversions were becoming all too common on DS, but lately things seem to be changing. It seems that the 50+ million userbase of the DS has forced game developers to step up thier efforts to please this large, loyal following. COD4 is a perfect example of this.

Gameplay.......

The DS's touch screen is proving more and more valuable for programmers willing to take advantage of its capabilities, and first person shooters benefit greatly. The touch screen aiming in this game is executed well with one minor flaw. Double tapping is the method used for switching to sight mode, so until you get the feel for it, you will find this happening at bad times, but it stops being an issue after a while. With the exception of this one minor gripe, the game handles very well, in all aspects. I also appreciated the airborne bombing missions and bomb diffusing touch screen mini games as they give the gameplay some variety.

Graphics........

While not comparable to its console counterpart (obviously), the game is a definate looker on the DS. The stages are detailed and varied, the explosions are very impressive, and the animation is also high end for the DS. Clearly, Activision put a lot of work into giving this game a look that retains the spirit of the console versions, and it shows.

Sound........

This is where this game really shocked me!!!!!!!!! Music, sound effects and lots of voicework round out this games aural experience, but truly, you have to hear it to believe it. To really soak in the greatness of this games sound quality, simply plug in headphones and you will be shocked at the level of cinematic quality put into this game. Truly remarkable!!!!!!!

All in all, if you own a DS and enjoy first person shooters, this is a no brainer. And if this is the trend DS conversions will follow, we are in for some first class titles!!!!!
