Dragon Ball Z: Supersonic Warriors 2
Review by K_G_A
"Great DBZ game, it still has some flaws though. (see bottom for real score)"
This is a good Dbz game, even non-fans will still enjoy it quite a lot, unfortunately, there are some problems that lower it's score for me, for example:
-There are no stun/hold attacks, eg. Gotenks's Galactic donuts and Ultra Buu buu Volleyball attack don't hold enemies anymore, they're rush attacks, which in my opinion, completely ruins those attacks.
-when you hit an enemy with a punch, you don't feel "satisfied" like in Supersonic warriors 1
-the throws have also lost their uniqueness, they're just normal boring throws now.
I'll mention some other problems later in the review.
A brief summary of what the game is:
DBZ Supersonic warriors 2 is a game where you have a team of three characters (or less) and you fight against the other group of characters, of course you only have one character out at a time. While fighting you can move freely through the air and fight using various attacks, and you have an energy bar that can store a maximum amount of 200%. I don't really know what else there is to say that's really important about the game.
If you liked the first one, you'll probably like this one too, there are more characters, more moves, more levels and most of all, there are transformations! Unfortunately there aren't many characters who can transform into a super saiya-jin, there are three characters: Teen Gohan, Gohan (can also turn into mystic Gohan) and Gotenks, Goku can use Kaioken, Trunks can go "Super saiya-jin 1/2" and Krillen can unlock his potential, there are also some other characters who can transform in some way. It's a shame, but no new attacks are unlocked when you DO transform, your attack power just goes up (well, for most characters)
There is also a new technique called ultimate attacks (or something like that) that can only be done when you have 150 energy or above and when your health is in the red. These attacks can only be used once though and they are extremely powerful.
Another new attack is the team attack, you need 200% energy and the "Team Arts" icon on your touch screen will light up, touch it and you dash forward a small distance, if you manage to hit your opponent with this, it goes into a rush attack, nothing special, obviously you need more than 1 character in your group and only certain characters can use team attacks with certain characters. These are powerful and flashy.
Something that really made the game better for me is that the screen doesn't pause for a while when your character is using a super move, unfortunately, usually when you are using a super move your character is invincible for some reason, which lowers the score for me.
Also, there are rush attacks, where you basically dash at the opponent and if you collide with him/her/it you enter a scene where your character is usually doing something to your opponent, it's like a dash throw, but these rush attacks are boring.
Also, there is something that really spruced up this game, each character has a special "attack", when you press "L" the character usually does some move unique to them, for example: super saiya-jin or some kind of transformation, regeneration, self-destructing, and lots of other stuff.
There are also now unique heavy energy blasts and energy shields (which can't be broken), dragon rush is also still in the game.
Music: 8/10
A lot of techno music but it's still quite varied, I'm bad as explaining music though, I liked it a lot though, it gives a new feeling to DBZ, the music is an improvement to SW1.
Graphics: 8/10
The graphics in this are really great, especially since it's the DS, the levels are in 3D and the characters are in 2D, still, the 2D things looks good.
Gameplay: 8/10
It's quite fun, but there are some things that could have been improved, so I'll give it 7 and a half.
The character roster and moves have nearly been doubled, so that's pretty good. As for the combat, it's quite fun.
Story: 8/10
Each character has there own stories and paths, accomplish certain things and certain paths will be unlocked, you also unlock a lot of moves and characters in story mode, and most of the paths have fun and interesting stories.
Replayability/play time: 8/10
You'll probably find yourself finishing maximum mode or Z-battle mode after you finish everyone's stories, even the tutorial mode where you play as Gotenks is really fun. When you finish everything, you'll probably just play free battle mode or play story battles again. You can also play multiplayer.
Overall: 8/10
A good sequel, but it's still lacking a bit. I'd give it 7 1/2 if I could, but the score thing doesn't allow it. You'll like this more if you're a DBZ fan I guess. (I am one btw)
