Disgaea DS
Review by Esmeraude
"Doooooood..."
I was really sad back in the day when my PS2 copy of Disgaea was lost in a terrible accident in which it got broken, those were truly sad times for me because I had spent entire days leveling up, perfecting my team for them to be able to defeat the evil Cave of Ordeals which had tormented me for weeks, but then OH! Nintendo decided to port this really great game to the DS, which is why when I saw it on my game story (for a really good affordable price) I couldn't help myself to say Doooooood...
Graphics 9/10
Atlus is well known for their games dealing with the unnatural, evil, and strange themes. They did the same this time just added a little bit of anime-style art and they toned it down a little for it to look both childish and incredible twisted. The graphics in this game for what the time are really good rendered and do perform the job in putting a dark theme to the atmosphere.
Story 7/10
This is one of the aspects of the game I don't enjoy, while it does provide with a new aspect in gaming, you being Laharl, son of the Overlord of the Underworld who wants to help prevent Heaven, Hell and Earth from being conquered. It is funny, don't get me wrong, but the game tends to be predictable up to the part in which I lost interest in it on the 7 or 8th chapter.
Gameplay 10/10
This is where it gets interesting, Disgaea of course is a Strategy RPG, and this game does make honor to the SRPG games. Disgaea starts as a normal game, you level up some of the characters, you find stronger weapons, you find new jobs, and you get stronger and so on. And then the game end to what I feel is a short story. But what this game doesn't lack, is side-quests, and trust me amigo when I tell you, you have plenty. You can end the game normally and then start what is the New Game +, I just don't know how to star explaining you the endless possibilities this game has, you can choose to level up your characters from level 100 to level 9999, defeat all the extra stages the game has, take on the Dark Assembly to pass a bill for more money, or if you're feeling naughty there is a bill to make enemies stronger. The complex battle is something that gets more difficult the more you explore the game, the DS version opens new changes such as items popping up on the battlefield that might change the direction of the battle or Geo Panels that can be both helpful or hateful.
Music 7/10
The soundtrack of Disgaea is at most good, some really cachy tunes in this games but then again most of the music in here gets repetitive at some points, but remember this is my opinion and you can love the soundtrack.
Replay Value
Disgaea is all about replayability, you can finish the game once, twice, or 50 times and still find something to do, the ridiculously amount of leveling up for each characters, and the items, or the optional bosses.
Overall Score 8/10
In the end Disgaea DS offers a fun time, and by time I mean plenty of it.
