Feel the Magic: XY/XX
Review by wolverinefan
"Quick and easy...."
Feel the Magic was the first DS title I ever played, at EB Games none-the-less. I didn't care for the few levels I played. Found the game for under $5 and grabbed it up. Was impressed at first but that wore thin by the end. Read on for my thoughts!
The story is very simple in Feel the Magic. You're a guy who has seen the girl of his dream, its love at first sight and he wants her. No you need to perform in front of her and make her want you. It's simple and never really goes anywhere until the predictable twist at the end. It's a cute story though...
The graphics in the game are very unique. Characters are all shadows, clothing is shown though so imagine a character but filled in with black ink but has normal clothes and hair on. The levels look rather basic but it's fine. It does give the game a very tech demo feel to it though. Lots of things are colorful, as long as you ignore the lame Nightmare level....
The sound in the game is a lot of fun. Music feels very 70's oom-bop but it fits some how. Sound effects are silly and fun. Oddly enough, this game seems to feature a lot of voice samples, more so than most games that I have played on the DS and they really aren't repeated a lot, unless you repeat a stage over and over. Sound is very nice though.
The control in the game is nothing but stylus play. Well and the use of the mic. Mic is easy to use and responds well. Stylus was exactly on, no problems at all. I did find the car parts to be weirdly done. Turning the wheel didn't work like taping to a side did.
The game play is very simple. A bunch of mini games, a little over 20 I'd guess, and you need to complete them. It sounds simple and is. The mini games range from making someone throw up fish, to getting out of the inside of snake to bowling. Boss fights are fairly simple. I found the driving one to be annoying because of the time limit and bull one was just tedious and long. Most of the mini games are short.
Here's how to judge the mini games though. They all have a life bar. Most are three tries, or three hits. One the three tries it means one hit and you need to start over. The stages will either have 1 part of 5 sections. The ones with five sections tend to have a small break after the 3rd section. This keeps things varied but with only 18 stages, a lot of which are 1 mini game (rest have 2 or 3, I think one has 4).
The replay in the game is kind of nice. Once you beat the game you unlock hard mode which I guess if you really enjoyed the game you could play through that. You can also replay all of the stages and try for scores (I think so anyway, I really didn't feel like trying it out). The game also has an odd amount of hidden bunnies. By hidden I mean in a cut scene and you get one chance (one hit) to find it. It's invisible.... The bunnies unlock new clothes for the girl to wear, some are also unlock able by having other Sega titles in (GBA ones). So the game does offer some stuff to do once you beat the game.
I know this is a really short review but there isn't a lot to say about this game. It has a story, it's made up of simple and slightly fun mini games, uses nothing butt he mic and stylus, good sound and graphics and mild replay value. It does feel like a tech demo and the game took me around 2-3 hours to beat which is way too short. Get it if you like Wario Ware or if you find it for as cheap as I did.
