Metroid II: Return of Samus

Review by Brak

"Metroid on the go? What an exceptional idea!!!"

Metroid has always been an excellent series. Though there are only 3 games in existence, each one is incredible, showing how powerful each system really is. Metroid II is a lot like the first game, adding in some cool new tools, and more levels.

Graphics: 9/10

These are great graphics for the Gameboy. They look pretty reminiscient to the ones from Metroid for the NES, but with more detail, and the use of larger sprites. The backgrounds are still pure black as before, but the rest of the scenery is detailed quite nicely.

Sound: 8/10

The sound effects were pretty appropriate to this game. They sound very different from the sound effects from Metroid, and seem a bit more updated. There isn't too much music used in this game, and some of it is bad, while some of it is good. Overall, I'd say Metroid II does a good job at sound.

Gameplay: 10/10

Not a letdown! This game is just as fun as it was on your NES! Samus is out to destroy 38 Metroids, scattered around the planet. Along the way she will find many upgrades, such as better armor to withstand heat, the spring ball, enabling her to jump when she morphs into a ball, the spider ball, which allows her to climb on walls and a ball, and more! Some areas can only be reached once you've found a certain item or upgrade. There is a lot of exploration to be done in this game, and some of the Metroids are hidden pretty well. Sometimes you'll find the remains of a Metroid that hatched, which is a clue that there must be one close by. This game has 3 saves, instead of using a password like the first game. These and many more features make this a must have!

The challenge isn't as high as it is in the other Metroid games. Actaully I'd have to say it's probably the easiest of the 3, but you'll still have a little trouble at some areas.

The replay value, unfortunately, is a little low. There isn't much to come back to after you've beaten it, but there are multiple endings, depending on how quick you beat the game.

Overall: 10/10

Another impressive Metroid game that must be added to your collection.
