Faceball 2000
Review by Brak
"Wacky mayhem!"
I saw this game in Nintendo Power's top 100 game list of 1997. I figured that anyone with that much experience must know what they're talking about, so I tried the game out. At first, I didn't find it too interesting, but once I got up to those harder levels, I really started to have fun!
Graphics: 8/10
These are 3D graphics. Yep, you heard me, 3D! I give Bullet-Proof software for even trying to make a 3D game on a portable system that wasn't too advanced. All in all, they managed to do a great job on the graphics, much better than in Battlezone on the Battlezone/Super Breakout collection. The enemies don't look too much different from each other however, since all of them are just simple shapes. This is what mainly brings this game down from a perfect score here.
Sound: 9/10
The sounds were perfectly fitting to the game. The graphics make the game look wacky, and the sound effects were cartoony. They did play the same tune for every level, but it was very well done. It really went well with a game like this.
Gameplay: 9/10
There are a total of 59 levels in this 3D shooter-type game, ranging from laughable difficulty to insanely frustrating difficulty. The maze designs on many of the courses are well set up, and the numerous amount of enemies is equally impressive. While not graphically impressive, the enemies are well designed, each with a different amount of hits and such. There isn't really any objective in this game, just to get to the goal of each level and have fun. Sure the game may look simple, but once you play it you'll realize how well set up it really is.
The challenge is high. levels 31-59 offer a lot of difficulty, and it will take a while to beat.
The replay value is high. With the bunch of different levels, it will keep you occupied. There's also an arena mode, in which you duke it out with a few enemies in one of the well-designed mazes. This game can also be played with more than one person, and from what I hear, a total of 16 people can battle in this game!
Overall: 9/10
Fun!
