Wario Land II
Review by Duke Nukem
"Wario's back, and meaner than ever!"
This here is the second game in Wario's successful Game Boy series. This game is very different from any other platformer ever. Whereas the original was basically a regular Mario game except Wario was the star, this game takes Wario into his own mold. Sure, there are power-ups, but not in the form of hats.
Graphics: 10/10
The graphics in this game are awesome. Wario is very large and there's lots of detail. The enemies even have detail. Wario's various power-ups also affect his appearence, and that is also super detailed.
Control: 10/10
Just like any other Mario game, this game is a blast to control. Everything is precise. There's no slowdown or framerate problems. Just perfect.
Music: 8/10
Eh, the music is alright. It's Game Boy, what do you expect?
Story: 7/10
Captain Syrup is back again. This time she has stolen all your treasure and has flooded the house. As Wario, you have to stop the flooding, recover your treasure, and stomp the evil Captain before she spends your booty! It's different, though not very good, but since when did a platformer have a rich, beautifully woven story?
Gameplay: 11/10
Gameplay rocks all. There are many different power-ups in this game, but they different because of one thing. You have to touch an enemy to aquire them. But don't you die if you touch an enemy? That's the neat thing. You do NOT DIE in this game! You only lose coins. Some people see this as being easier, but this game is HARD. One level has you trying to hang onto an owl while barely hitting a giant maze of spikes. Here's where the power-ups come in. By enganging in certain enemies you get different powers. Eating cake makes you real fat, thus able to break blocks below you and fall into new areas. The Spring power allows you to jump REAL high, and get those gold coins. Another is the Zombie power, which lets you fall in small cracks and kill enemies. Another is the pancake power, when you get squished. Then you're able to fit under any wall, but you can't fall down. Wario has some moves of his own. He has his signature Shoulder CHarge, which breaks certain blocks. He also has his Pound Ground attack, as well as his Samus rip-off Ball Up attack. Additionally, some blocks can only by broken by throwing enemies into it, while other blocks you need to be on fire to break.
Other Stuff:
There's one room in each board where you need to complete a game and get a treasure. Not only that, you need to collect a map piece. Collect both and you are able to fight Captain Syrup. More treasure=better score.
Overall:
If you liked any Mario game you'll like this. It's an enhanced Mario platformer, but with so many new features you'd swear it wasn't. If you liked the original Wario, get this game, now!
