Kid Icarus: Of Myths and Monsters
Review by Walker Boh Ohmsford
"This'll keep ya busy for a while, that's for sure!"
I first played the Game Boy version of Kid Icarus in 1993 and I liked it. I didn't play the NES version until the next year, but for now here's what I think of the GB version.
Play/control 10 / 10. The controls themselves are quite easy to learn, and you don't want to play this game if you aren't good at learning video game controls. You will have to do a lot of climbing and jumping to reach your goal. I do know one thing. The controls in this game are a hell of a lot better than the controls in the NES version.
Audio 10 / 10. The sound is your basic Game Boy sound, but it does fit its intended purpose. When you get hit it sounds like a cry of pain, (though a rather lame and insincere one, as if Pit didn't really feel the blow). The sound when you shoot an arrow is really cool though, and the other SFX fit what they're used for.
The music is catchy, with happy, adventurous-sounding tunes for the main areas and a dark, menacing feel for fortresses. The music in the final area is quite good, and since there's no fortress there it remains an upbeat, adventuresome tune until you reach the final boss. The music during regular boss battles is quite perfect, although it's the same music as the bat rooms you'll encounter in your travels. You do hear this tune during the final boss's first form. The music for his second and final form is the best in the game. It's a rather slow, but at the same time fast-paced tune that has a tense, urgent feel to it. And the ending theme? Well..if you've played the NES version of this game you'll realize that the ending theme to the Game Boy version is the intro theme to the NES version. Well..that's a great song, so don't knock it!
Story 10 /10. I could be wrong, but I think this game might be a prequel or sequel to the NES version. Angel Land had lived in peace for many years, and its ruler, Palutena the goddess, has watched over the land with a contented smile and a gentle hand. But the peace is fated to end as the demon Orcos seeks to destroy Palutena and rule the land himself. Your quest? Stop him at all cost!
Overall 10 / 10. If you can find this game anywhere, give it a try and see what ya think. If ya like it, get it. If ya don't, don't.
