Game Boy Camera
Review by LordAtomic
"So, Game Boys are now game machines, digital cameras, and palm pilots, with a TV tuner on the way. Why doesn't James Bond have one?"
This has gotta be the most innovative gadget I've ever seen. A little digital camera that you can put in your Game Boy's bag of goodies! While it isn't perfect, it is a great little tool to have. I would love to see a Game Boy Camera 2 for Game Boy Advance, with better quality pictures and more mini-games.
The heart of the GBC is, of course, taking pictures. But there's more to it than that. My favorite thing to do is take a bunch of pictures quickly via the time-lapse, and go to the animation center to make a mini-movie. Once, I created a film called ''A Normal Day in the Life of George W. Bush'', where I looped him getting up, walking, and sitting down over and over again. ;)
Another fun thing to do is to put your face in the mini-games. By taking four pictures of your face, you can replace the default character faces with pictures of yourself.
Speaking of the mini-games, I really wish that there were more. There are only three, and they are:
1. Space Fever II
You fly through space shooting up enemies. Every minute or so, you come across a boss; a giant head. By taking pictures of yourself and putting them in the mini-games, it's really cool to see your head floating in space!
This game is really addictive, and is my favorite of the bunch.
Score: 9/10
2. Ball
You're a little guy juggling slow-moving balls around. You move from left to right keeping the balls bouncing (eww!). This is fun too, but not as good as Space Fever II.
Score: 8/10
3. DJ
I really don't know how to play this game. I know that you create your own songs, but I don't know how. Maybe I'll update this review someday when I learn how to play.
Score: ?
Another one of my gripes is how the pictures that you take are really low quality. You need perfect lighting if you want your pictures to be visible. Maybe if Nintendo would've released this thing as Game Boy Color only, it would be better.
You can also trade your photos with friends over a link cable, which is a nice touch.
There is also the ability to doodle on your photos with paint, or putting clip art on them. You can put on English/Japanese writing, and a bunch of anime style art to make your pictures really funny.
One of the greatest aspects of the Game Boy Camera is the ability to print out your photos via the Game Boy Printer. Unfortunately, Game Boy Printers are no longer sold in stores, and they do not have an infinite amount of printer paper.
GB Camera Pros
- Innovative
- Making movies is fun
- The mini-games are great
- Clip art/doodling rules!
GB Camera Cons
- Low resolution photos
- POKEMON CLIP ART! KILL IT!
- How the hell do you play DJ?
Bottom Line
A fun little tool that is definitely a solid buy.
