WWF War Zone
Review by Gruel
"An allright wrestling game with a hard computer opponent"
Graphics: 6: The wrestlers look average and are easy to distinguish even though there is no color. The wrestlers are big, not tiny like the previous WWF Game Boy Game, WWF RAW. There are biographies of each wrestler with a nice pinup of each of the 13 WWF Wrestleres in the game.
Sound: 6: Theres the traditional annoying background music during gameplay that plagues about 80% of all Game Boy games, but you can turn the sound off too. All the in-ring sound effects are nicely done.
Gameplay: 6: The action in the ring is pretty easy overall with only a couple moves to do out of a grapple, running moves like clotheslines and dropkicks, your various elbow and leg drops, and moves off the top turnbuckle. The computer is really tough to beat, even when you put the difficulty on easy. The game features 13 wrestlers: Ken Shamrock , Owen Hart, Shawn Michaels, "Stone Cold" Steve Austin, Undertaker, Kane, Hunter Hearst Helmsley, "The Rock" Rocky Maivia, Faarooq, Mankind, The British Bulldog, Ahmed Johnson, and Goldust. As you can see the only wrestlers not featured in here the N64 and Playstation versions have are the Headbangers and Bret Hart plus the hidden Cactus Jack and Dude Love. There are only 4 ways to play:
Singles: Your basic one-on-one matchup Tag Team: Two teams battle it out where you tag your partner in and out Cage: First person to climb to the top of the Cage wins the match Challenge: Battle all the other WWF superstars where the winner gets the WWF Championship belt, also a password saves your progress
Replay Value: 7: Passwords save your progress through Challenge mode. Also there is a 2-player link mode so you go at it with your friend in single, tag team, or cage matches.
Overall: 6: There are plenty of wrestlers to choose from. The link mode is fun. The thing that plagues the game a lot is that the computer is really tough to beat and is not worth the price of purchasing this game unless you got a friend who has a copy as well. If you have a Game Boy Color get WWF Attitude, even though it doesn't have a link mode, the computer is at a decent difficulty level plus there are 20 wrestlers and a lot of different modes to keep you occupied. If you don't have a Game Boy Color and have to pick up a wrestling game for plain old Game Boy, I would reccommend WWF Superstars 2. Anyways don't bother buying this game unless you know a friend who has a copy.
