Battle Arena Toshinden

"If God Could Play Gameboy..."

If God could play GameBoy, he would. Mainly because this is one of my favorite fighters for this old school console. Basically you are select a fighter and you are invited to a tournament. Each person goes there for different reason.

Story 3/10
The story is pretty much the same for each character. He/she gets invited to this tournament of elite fighters. They each go because of personal reasons. Some want power, some want a challenge, and some want revenge. Not a very good story.

Controls 6/10
At times it can be slow and sluggish and the whole game will slow down, quite annoying. It is possible to perform simple combos, shooting an energy ball or some weapon combo, but unless you have the instruction book or go to look here on GameFaqs, you'll only get them by luck.

Game Play 8/10
As you fight each person and unlock the secret uber powerful boss, you will slowly realize how amazingly simple this game is. You can perform a few combos and each character has a different weapon that they use and have a technique for. You can grabble, launch a fireball and do a few special attacks along with your normal sword swinging or whip lashing action. You can even attack downward while jumping (my favorite). To defeat an enemy, either bring down their life bar or knock them out of the the ring three times. The second option makes it a lot easier to win, and lose. You'll find right as you deliver the finishing blow to an enemy he will get in a lucky hit and knock you out of the ring. He'll then corner you and you'll be gone. I beat this game on my second try through it. The true challenge comes from using everyone to beat the game.

Difficulty 5/10
As I said above, this game is fairly easy since you just need to corner the enemy and hit him three times for a ring out and victory. I beat this game on my second try and played for a total of about 35 minutes. If you want a true challenge, use every character to beat the game. I would have given it a 2, but using all characters to accomplish your mission adds a bit more challenge to it.

Sound 8/10
The sound isn't too bad with a different track for each level you play in. As the game goes by pretty fast, you won't be sick of it.

Graphics 7/10
The graphics are pretty impressive. The sprites can only be described through the anime term ''chibi'' because everyone except the final boss looks no older than 8 and has the size to prove it.

Overall
I think everyone should own this game, despite its low rating. It is a fairly easy and very entertaining fighting game. I highly doubt anyone could find this game new, so I suggest you buy it used. Buying this game new would be a good buy, but it would probably be expensive. Happy Gaming!
