Kirby's Block Ball
Review by Braben
"This time Kirby meets Arkanoid!"
Here we have Nintendo again experimenting with our dear Kirby, if in the magnificent Kirby’s Pinball Land that pink puff ball was stuck in (guess?), a pinball, this time he meets the ancient Arkanoid (or the even more ancient Breakout if you are that old).
The graphics are like in any other Kirby game, simple but tremendously well done, as I always say simply perfect for the Game Boy, I think that they just can’t be better.
Also like in any other Kirby the music is SUPERB, this title probably has the best music ever in a Kirby game (at least for the GB), and as all the previous Kirby game had magnificent music imagine how catchy this time is. Terrific.
I’m sure you already know, but if for some reason you have not idea about what this title is about even after saying it is Arkanoid with Kirby, the objective of the game is to destroy all the bricks in the screen with Kirby instead of a ball (well, maybe not exactly, in order to use Kirby instead a the usual ball we’ll have to press the button one second after the ball reaches the paddle) . Of course this is not just a plain and simple Arkanoid clone with Kirby doing as the ball, obviously, and like in Pinball Land, Hal Laboratory has added lot of new features to make everything deeper and more entertaining. One of the most interesting new features is that some stages will have up to four paddles at the same time, like the back cover of the box says it is an intense four-way action contest!, then sometimes we’ll have two balls at the same time. With two balls, four paddles, and spikes on the four walls of the screen this game can be very challenging sometimes. We also have bosses and most of the abilities Kirby had in the Dream Land series, so you will be able to destroy bricks as a shinning spark, a fire ball, or a ball of needles.
Replay Value:
Each world has an score, and in order to get the best ending you’ll have to beat that score. That can be a pretty tough job in some stages because there is a little bonus game where all the bricks become some sort of jelly and you have to destroy ALL the bricks in a limited amount of time.
Of course we also have another three mini games and it is granted that you will play the game entirely more than once.
If you think that a game like this can’t be any good just go and buy it, it is almost impossible not to like it, just be sure to play in a GB, this games can only be enjoyed in that system, using a Rom you’ll just ruin the entire experience, don’t be fool.
