Game Boy
Review by Richard Walker
"Perfection"
GameBoy is a worldwide name. I'm pretty sure, you could step into a common house hold, ask what a GameBoy is, and somebody in the house will give you a vague description of this revolutionary handheld. It's a cuboid object, with a start and select button, A and B button, and a D pad. Nothing fancy. In fact, it's just the NES with a tiny screen above it. But never, ever under estimate the power of what this little bitch can do, and what it has done already.
GRAPHICS- 10/10
In the early 90's, there was just no beating Genesis and NES when it came to graphical quality. But, GameBoy, though in black and white(Technically, it's monochrome, but anyway) still had shocking graphics for something that wasn't hooked to a television. The early games were simple, like Tetris and Super Mario Land, so complex graphics were not needed, were not attempted, and were not present. Because of the simplicity, it was clear what you were doing. It's simply astounding!
MUSIC/SFX- 9/10
Great stuff. The music is always a good show, and you might end up humming the tune of a game when you wake up in the morning. Aside from the actual music in a game, no matter how pathetic, bullshit, and nuts the music is, it's clear. If a music port has been made from an arcade game, it's always in there somewhere. You can hear the stuff.
Another point is that the music is not only clear, but also loud!! OK, you are not going to substitute the GameBoy for your mini hifi you have beside your computer. But the music, on maximum, is loud! It will frighten you out of your sleep if you are a deep snoozer.
GAMEPLAY- 9/10
Most games on here are two things- long games, which don't ever seem to end and you've never really completed in your life. Or there are simple ones, games which you'll get bored of the simplicity, very, very easily. However, those are the only types of games, and you must love them.
OVERALL- 10/10
The little gray box that started the handheld mania. Many handheld's have attempted to cat the greatness that is GameBoy, GameGear, Game.com, etc. They've tried and failed. Miserably. GameBoy is the single greatest of all time, it's everything you could want in a console you can carry around.
BUY, RENT, OR BURN?
Buy a classic GameBoy, and keep it forever. It will be a collector's item someday, and besides that it's fun to play despite the size and amount of batteries. But still, get one today!
