NBA Jam Tournament Edition
Review by Braben
"Excellent port, too bad it lacks the two player option."
The Game Boy version of NBA Jam T.E. keeps being as surreal as the Snes version, your players are going to be able to jump and score in a way that it seems like if Goku and his bunch were playing basketball instead of ordinary players.
The graphics are good, the players look all the same but at least it is possible to identify the black ones from the white ones, in any case, the good thing here are the movements and animations, they are perfectly made, almost as good as the ones for the Snes, the way they run and perform all their special movements is really well done.
Unlike the Snes version there is music during the match's, but it is average, not bad at all but certainly not very appropriate.
The gameplay is very good, passing shooting and blocking is very simple and the controls work pretty fast, but there is one problem, the Turbo, because as the Game Boy only has two buttons, in order to activate the Turbo you will have to press and hold Start, and it is very hard and annoying to use the Turbo while trying to pass or shoot at the same time, go get your Game Boy and try to press Star and any other button at the same, it is not as easy as it seems.
We have most of the teams and real players from the NBA, each one has its abilities, some of them are faster, or stronger, or their passes are more accurate, etc, so you will have to choose them carefully. Another important thing are the injuries, if you use a certain player too much his injuries will make him suffer from degraded play in all his attributes, so sometimes you will have to let them rest and substitute them, by resting they will restore their health.
Like in the Snes version if a player scores three times in a row he will be “on fire”, and during that time your accuracy will be much better (though it is also possible to miss, so it is not a good idea to try to score from anywhere) and the Turbo bar will be unlimited. If you want you can also place power-ups on the field, you know how this things work, they can give you invincibly, unlimited Turbo, etc.
I have never played the original NBA Jam so I don’t know if this new version has new features, but I don’t think so because these games always have minor improvements and the only thing companies want with them is easy money, however, I think this Game Boy version of NBA Jam Tournament Edition is as good as its big brother for the Snes, but sadly it also hurts a lot the lack of a two player option and the difficulty to use the Turbo button. Anyway, if you don’t mind playing alone then this game is an excellent choice, because the truth is that this is an excellent basketball game.
”My lack of vocabulary and grammatical errors (if there’s any) are because I’m not from an English speaking country, sorry about that.”
