Review by Braben
"He`s the terror that flaps in the nigh...as well as a great action game!"
If the original TV show was a spin off from Duck Tales, Darkwing Duck`s video game is a Duck Tales spin off in every sense of the word, and so I have no choice but to compare it with that other Capcom game, so I am going to say ``Duck Tales`` more than its good for you health, you have been warned.
Plot:
It seems that there is a crime organisation called F.O.W.L causing trouble in the city and as Darkwing seems to be the only superhero in the city, he`ll have to take care of them.
Graphics:
Exactly the same ones any Duck Tales title has but with Darkwing as the main character, everything else, the charters, items, stages and everything have exactly the same style, which is very good.
Music:
Duck Tales style?, how did you guessed?, now really, yes, the music has the same style than any other Duck Tales game, and so it is very nice, sometimes catchy, sometimes not, but overall very cool, and of course we have the main Darkwing Duck theme that is pretty cool.
Gameplay:
Think any Duck Tales game only that a lot more action oriented and you have Darkwing Duck, really, they that similar, and that is because they both were made using the same game engine. However, being a lot more action oriented also makes the gameplay quite different at the same time, this is not Duck Tales with another character, the game`s objectives are different, as well as the way the proceed in each stage, there are a lot more platforms and Darkwing has a gun to shoot enemies, jumping over the enemies heads is not an option this time.
The gameplay is so similar, that even the ``select the stage you prefer at the beginning`` feature is also here, and what happens when those stages are cleared is the same as you are imagining if you have tried a Duck Tales game.
My conclusion:
I don`t know, but maybe there is still someone there who so is still confused, so I am going to repeat it for the last time, Darkwing Duck is Duck Tales only that with more action, and if you haven`t played a Duck Tales game then think about this as some kind of Mega Man game with less depth and action and more platforms.
In the end, the game is not as good as Duck tales because while it is more action packed the great sense of adventure from that already one million times mentioned game can`t be found here, but even with that this is an excellent title and a perfect game for any Game Boy owner because it looks and plays perfect in this system.
