Judge Dredd

Review by Dizzy Anonymity

"I want my $3.99 back."

Introduction: Quite a while ago I watched the movie Judge Dredd. I have to admit, it was a decent movie. Not something I would watch in public, but good enough to watch once on a rainy day. With the knowledge that the movie was decent and that the Sega Genesis version of Judge Dredd was alright (from seeing it played at a friend's house), I decided to purchase the Gameboy version of Judge Dredd when I seen it for only $3.99 at Wal-Mart. Little did I know that that purchase would be one of the worst purchases I ever made.

Graphics: 1/10 While the console versions of Judge Dredd weren't anything special, the Gameboy version takes it to a whole 'nother level of suckitude. Especially in the graphics department. The backgrounds as well as the foreground and the characters... and the enemies... are all black outlines shaded onto an orange screen. I know the original Gameboy couldn't handle color or that great of graphics, but come on. This is terrible. If a game is going to look that bad on a system, just don't release it on that system. Instead of worrying about cashing in on the film's success, the company that released this... "thing"... should have worried about making a quality game.

Music/Sound: 1/10 Words can not even describe how terrible this game's music is. There are some Gameboy titles that attempt to make bearable music despite the system's handicaps, and there are some that make darn good music such as The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening. Judge Dredd doesn't even try. The developers just threw in some repetitive and headache inducing music probably only because they had to have some kind of sound while you play the game.

Story: 2/10 The story of the game is loosely based on the movie. Except in the Gameboy game there is no story progression. You start in one area and move through area after area that resembles random parts in the movie. If you hadn't seen the movie then you would be clueless to what was going on. Heck, even if you did see the movie you'd probably still not know what was going on.

Gameplay: 1/10 Judge Dredd features some revolutionary gameplay items such as RUNNING! And JUMPING! And SHOOTING THINGS! And don't forget that you can CLIMB LADDERS and CLIMB ACROSS ROPES! Woo-hoo! Seriously, the gameplay in this game is about as generic as it comes. You wander around the streets shooting or punching random enemies. Then you may run or jump around a little. Shoot/punch some more enemies. Run/jump some more. Maybe do a bit of climbing. Then more punching and shooting. Then next level. Repeat.

Replayability: 1/10 The chances of you playing the game past the first level is slim and none so why even bother with playing the game all over again?

Overall: 1/10 There was actually high potential for a game based on the Judge Dredd franchise. Well, not really on Gameboy though. Some interesting things could have been done with certain parts of the story. Unfortunately, we instead received a horribly made turd of a game.
