Review by Mighty Oracle
"In all honesty, one of the worst video games of all time."
Alright, LucasArts has released many many Star Wars games, but this one is just awful. This was supposed to follow by Star Wars: Episode IV: A New Hope the movie and it does so, just not all the way.
Gameplay - 1/10
The gameplay in the game would have been a bit better if they would change the way Luke looks and change the level layouts and just make it more fun. They didn't however. In a nutshell, the gameplay is this: You walk around through each level, killing enemies along the way (That's what you'd expect from a Star Wars game, right?). Well, this may sound fun, but in fact it is excessively boring. The blaster bullets don't even look real, they look like the foamy things you get with battery operated toy guns. The enemies don't look like Star Wars creatures at all, and the overall gameplay is just horrible. You can't move diagonally, only left and right. Getting to the next level is insanely difficult, which makes you want to put this game down and throw it in a sparkler fire five minutes after playing it. Seriously, it is that bad. Also, on the World Map, you ride Luke's landspeeder, but it does not look like it at all. The landspeeder riding is the only thing that was even enjoyable for me about the gameplay, but that still doesn't help add score to the gameplay. I give this section easily a 1 out of 10.
Graphics - 1/10
The graphics are also not a saving grace. C3-P0 looks like Nightmare from Soul Calibur and Luke has no eyes and has green hair. The overall level layout looks completely bland, and not at all like the Star Wars universe. I've never got the lightsaber in the game myself because the game was so horrible I couldn't play that far, but I'm sure the lightsaber doesn't look like you'd expect, anyway. Also, the graphics of the World Map are not all that great, either (Trust me, I have seen a lot better in a Gameboy game. For example, Pokemon.). The graphics could have been much better, but they aren't, sadly.
Sound/Audio - 1/10
I thought the game would at least have some half-way decent sounds for a Star Wars game. But no, the sound and music of the game are just bland and in no way relate to the Star Wars universe. The sound of the blasters on this game are excessively bad, and I am sure the sound of the lightsaber isn't a saving grace, either. I am in no way trying to bash this game, but all that I stated is true. The music is not all that great, either, and I have seen some better music in games like Pokemon and Harvest Moon. Overall, the sound and audio is not what you'd expect from something as legendary as Star Wars.
Difficulty - 7/10
The difficulty of this game is EXCESSIVELY hard, and it will make you want to quit in the matter of 20 minutes. For example, on one level, I was trying to jump across the platforms and to the other side, but instead I fell down to the spikes and died. I died by the spikes at least four different times until eventually, I just gave up. The game is as hard, if not harder, than Super Star Wars for the Super Nintendo. I like games that are hard and challenging, but this is just ridiculous. Overall, this is another reason that made me think the game wasn't as good as it could've been. In all honesty, this is the hardest Gameboy Pocket game I have ever played.
Story - 8/10
The story is actually pretty decent, as it follows by A New Hope a lot. But, like I said at the start of this review, it doesn't follow it completely, but I'm in no way going to bash the story of the game. It is actually pretty good, and the only thing that would make this game a bit more enjoyable than it is. Some parts of the game aren't exactly connected to the movie, but most of it is. An overall 8 out of 10.
Replay Value - 1/10
The replay value for this game is terrible. It got so boring so fast that I didn't even get my lightsaber, but I've played through a bit of this game, and I did not like it. If you do manage to beat the game (Shouldn't take more than 2 hours, even on your first play through.), I'm almost positive that you won't want to play through the game a second time.
Overall - 1/10
The only saving grace of this game for me was the story, and even that didn't make me want to play the game. I got like half way through the game and got lost on the World Map and just quit. The game is overall very tedious, extremely difficult, the sounds are not what you'd expect from a Star Wars game, and the game, in my opinion, is not worth more than $5.00 US dollars. The game could have been much better, seeing the graphics of the Pokemon games that came out for this system, but no, they didn't use the graphics to their full potential, nor did they use the capabilities of the Gameboy Pocket to its full advantage. In my opinion, this game is just not worth it, and I would advise anyone to stay away from it.
Buy or Rent
Well, you can't rent the game anymore, so just look on eBay if you are interested in getting it. It's your money, but I wouldn't recommend spending it on this game. Seriously, if you wish to buy this game, go ahead, but I would recommend Quest 64 over this game any day. It should not cost anymore than $1-5 on eBay (US Dollars, that is.), so if you wish to buy it, by all means go for it.
And that's the end of the review. I hope you enjoyed the review, and I hope it gave anyone who was wanting to try it an opinion on whether or not they should get it.
