Mortal Kombat Trilogy

Review by eolsen

"Probably the best Game.com game, sadly"

Mortal Kombat Trilogy is probably one of the better games made for the Game.com. This game is pretty much the same concept of all other Mortal Kombat games but is only moderately fun compared to them.

The game starts with a short intro of the Moral Kombat story, which everyone knows like the back of their own hand, and it seems nothing was added to the storyline. There are two modes of game play in this game. There is Mortal Kombat, of course, and Vs. Mode. Mortal Kombat mode is just like the basic game play of any other MK game. First you must choose which warrior you want to command. There are a total of eleven different warriors. The cast of characters is a rather odd one. This game seemed to single out a lot of minor characters in the game/movie that aren't in many other MK games. For example Mileena and Rain are included in this game. Then you “choose your destiny” or difficulty level. There are four different difficulty levels.

In Mortal Kombat mode, the game play is very traditional. There is a meter at the top of the screen that reflects your health and health diminishes with each hit a player takes. In versus mode, you players can connect their Game.com systems and play the game against each other. I've never played this game mode, so I won't comment on it. In both of these modes, there is also an Aggressor Bar, which is new to this game. The Aggressor Bar is located in the bottom of the screen. As a player attacks, his bar will go up and the others will go down. When one player bar is full, they become much more powerful.

Graphics
Like most Game.com games, this game was pretty poor graphically. Because of the low frame rate of these games, animations aren't very smooth and look very primitive. Usually it affects the game play in Game.com games, but this one it didn't seem to make much of a difference. Though there isn't much difference between some characters graphically and most moves are blurred a lot, the game play is still pretty solid and unaffected by the graphics. The contrast of the shades of colors was good, everything was pretty easy to see.

Sound
The sound is probably the worst point about this game. I didn't detect any music at all, which I found very disappointing since MK has always had some good tunes. The sound effects also were sparsely placed and not of very high quality. The only sound effects were the sounds of kicking and punching and the occasional “excellent!” at the end of battle. There really isn't much to say about the sounds besides that they were pretty lack luster.

Game Play/Replay Value
This game is one of the more enjoyable games to play for the Game.com. The graphics didn't interfere with the game play which is pretty rare for Game.com games. Not much was changed in this MK game from the earlier MK titles, which was good. However, I didn't find that there were enough controls to add more depth to the game. There are no sweeps, spin kicks, or any retreating attacks for that matter. There is only a high punch, high kick, block, low kick, and special moves. This was very disappointing and doesn't add the depth to most MK games that make them enjoyable games to me. Because of this, the game doesn't keep my attention like other MK games do, which is why I say this game has a relatively low replay value.

Final Words
Keeping this game as close to other MK games as possible was definitely a good choice by the producers. Of the few games made for the Game.com system, as I have said multiple times before, this is probably the best one; but keep in mind, this isn't saying a whole lot.
