"Perhaps the worst game on the worst system ever"
OPENING STATEMENT
What possessed the developers of this game to make Rise of the Robots? It’s horrible music, control, and gameplay, not to mention lack of fun, make it one of the worst games ever created. But, what possessed the developers?
GAMEPLAY--1
It is times like these that make me wish that my format allowed negative numbers. There is absolutely no point to the gameplay in Rise of the Robots. Although CJayC calls Rise of the Robots a sports game in the Game Data, Rise of the Robots really is a single player tournament fighter, a term that I have never used before, and hopefully never have to use again. The tournament fighting genre’s biggest strength is it’s multiplayer capabilities, and Rise of the Robots throws all of that away.
In case you have not gathered this information already from my numerous inferences, Rise of the Robots is one of the worst playing games of all time. Rise of the Robots is so bad for one reason. You really do not have all that much control over what you do. You start the game, and you are immediately thrown into a match against an opponent. No menus besides the Main Menu, no fanfare, just instant fighting. If you manage to survive the first match, there is another one right behind it, and then another one, and then another one, and etcetera. Rise of the Robots is a complete waste of a game.
GRAPHICS--8
Well, I have to give credit where it is due. The developers did a wonderful job designing Rise of the Robots graphics. Which obviously shows that their priorities were out of place and they were concentrating on the wrong thing. Of course, the robots do not exactly look like robots. They look like a blue Spawn, with a normal head. The arenas are beautiful, especially for a Game Gear game. The rest of the game may be horrible, but the graphics are wonderful.
MUSIC--2
SOUND--3
Unfortunately, the audio, along with the rest of the game, is not as impressive as the graphics. The music all sounds like mindless beeps and bleeps. You can only hear the ‘song’ that the beeps are playing if you listen very closely. If you do not listen very closely, the sound just sounds like mindless early Game Boy songs.
The sound is a tad better, but it is still less than satisfactory. When a punch or kick lands, it sounds like someone with their hands muffled, or in mittens, clapping their hands. The menu noises are almost staticy. Most importantly, the sound effects all sound like you could make them in your own home.
CONTROL--2
All of the buttons, except Start of course, have the exact opposite functions from what I think they should have. I ended up using the one type of attacks when I meant to use the other, which frustrated me to no end. Also, the game controls sluggishly. When you press a button, you occasionally need to wait a few seconds for the action to happen.
FUN--1
Fun? Hah! Like a single player tournament fighter could ever be fun. Plus, coupled with all of the frustrations of all of the problems, no one could ever have fun even if Rise of the Robots had multiplayer capabilities. Not even a naturally happy person on happy pills could have fun. There are just too many bad elements in Rise of the Robots.
CHALLENGE--HIGH
To add to the frustration, the artificial intelligence is way ahead of its time. Each match is like The Battle of the Bulge. They are almost impossible to win, because the computer’s character attacks relentlessly, without the controlling lag that you must suffer. If you can get past the first match, consider yourself a Rise of the Robots champion.
REPLAY VALUE--LOW
Well, what did you expect Rise of the Robots to win? A single player tournament fighting game in which you can rarely get past the first match, with horrible control and audio should never get any higher than a Low replay value rating. Because no one will ever want to play Rise of the Robots again, even if you do not listen to my review, and you still go and play it.
CLOSING STATEMENT
Since there were no reviews of Rise of the Robots when I submitted my review, I can understand how my neighbor was sucked into purchasing this horrible game. But, now that my review is up, you have no excuse. Avoid Rise of the Robots at all costs.
