"MegaMan - Now on the GameGear!"
Way back when, I wanted this game for my birthday so badly, and what do you know, I got it. Now, the question is, was this game worth it?
Visual
7/10
The graphics in this game are pretty good. They recreate the NES versions of Megaman almost perfectly. There is a major problem, however, and that has to do with the size of the GameGear screen. The screen is too small to see what is going on around you most of the time, and this is especially annoying in Starman's stage, where there are several floating enemies in a large area, but most of them cannot be seen, so you get hit as your falling.
Audio
?/10
The sound on my GameGear does not work, and I cannot remember the what the game sounded like from when it did work.
Gameplay
7/10
Classic Megaman. There are several enemies (four normal, and then 2 extra) and you can fight them in any order you wish. Once you defeat said enemies, you will gain their power and use it on the other enemies, of which some have weaknesses to. That is the basic premise of the Megaman series, and this one is no exception. There are 4 normal enemies taken from some the NES Megaman games (Stoneman, Starman, Brightman and Napalm man), and once they are beaten, 2 more enemies (Waveman and Toadman) must be defeated before tackling the insidious Dr. Wily.
The stages are fairly challenging, with the number of do-or-die jumps kept to a minimum, but at some points, it's impossible to make a jump without dieing several times and figuring out how EXACTLY to do it. The most difficult part of this game, however, is the small screen size, where you sometimes you cannot see enemies until you get hit by them. If it were not for these problems, the game would be much easier (playing it on hard mode will remedy that, however) and the gameplay would be much improved.
Replayability
4/10
You can retry the game on hard mode, or just replay it on normal, but there's really no point and it's not really that fun.
Fun Factor
7/10
Having never played any of the NES Megaman games, Megaman for Game Gear was new and exciting to me, but if you've previously played the either Megaman 4 or 5 (where the enemies of this game originate) it will be rather boring and flawed compared to those games. The two extra enemies also provide some fun as they are harder than the first four and the annoyance factor is lesser than the beginning four levels.
Final
7/10 (Note:Not an average)
This is an okay Megaman game that collector's would be proud of, but for everyone else, the NES versions are much better and much more enjoyable.
