"Good, but could be better"
This is the first X-men game on the sega game gear. The object is to go through the levels and gain access to the other characters. There's 7 X-men total. Once all the levels are beat, you gain access to the last level where you fight the main boss.
Each X-men has at least one mutant power. The bad part is each time you use them, the power meter drains. It adds to the challenge, but does get annoying since some X-men run out of mutant power very quickly.
All the enemies are pretty much the same. They move close to you and attack. The ones with missile attacks move back and forth shooting at you. Very little strategy is required. Enemies take several hit to defeat.
Each level is quite complex. A maze is you will. The only exceptions are two levels that are pretty straight forward. There are multiple paths that you can take. Something handy, during boss fight, you can actually leave and go back into the level to pick up more health and mutant power if you need.
Story
Not much of a story actually. The Juggernaut is attacking the Hover dam. All but two X-men go to stop him. In short, they all get captured and it's up to the two remaining X-men to save them. You can chose which level to attack first. All but the final are available.
Music and Sound
The music and sound effects are typical game gear sounds. There is one music track that I actually like. Most sound effects sound the same. Punches don't sound like punches. All missile attacks sound the same.
Graphics
The graphics aren't excatly the best. The X-men are easy to distinguish. Character models are very small. The look better in the other two X-men games. You can't see Wolverine's claws. Not a whole lot to be said.
Other things
I've never played the second X-men game for game gear, but between this and Mojo's world, this game is my favorite. As said before, the levels are complex. There's no best way to beat the game. Despite some of the music in the game might make your ears bleed, it's still a good, fun game. Some people may never finish it. It's a tough game.
Buy or rent?
You can't rent it anywhere i'm sure of that. The only place you can buy it from is probably E-bay. If you're lucky, you can find it in a local game store
