Yup. Yet another work in progress. But I won't have time to work on FFTA
for a little while, so I figured I might as well get it out *NOW* while I
can. Hopefully, it should serve some use, although it may end up being a bit
bloated for its own good. There's still more info to dig out, however, but
I'm not sure when I'll be able to get that.
This was, once, meant to be in the Mechanics Guide. The sheer size of this
should tell you why it isn't. As such, it has become its own document, but
it *will* reference a couple of things in the Mechanics Guide rather than
type them out again. Sorry.

FFTA's Quest System is not random. Quests appear according to a specific
system, and it takes only a little bit of knowledge of this system in order
to control it.
First, let's throw out some figures. There are 511 Quest IDs in the game,
since a Quest ID of 0 means no Quest. Not all of these IDs are used. FFTA
can keep track of the status of *64* of these Quests at any one time.
Which 64 it decides to keep track of depends on which Quests you have
completed. If you have failed to unlock a Quest, then FFTA doesn't need to
keep track of it yet, obviously. In addition, if you have completed a quest
that never repeats, then FFTA no longer needs to keep track of that either.
A Quest is added to the 64 available as soon as you unlock the requirements
for it to appear. This is usually the completion of some other Quest, but
can sometimes have other requirements added to it. Once unlocked, a Quest
will be added to the first available slot in the 64. If none exist, then it
will wait until one opens up.
When a Quest is added, it is (usually) immediately considered to be
*active*. Active Quests are eligible to appear in any pub (with exceptions).
Active Quests will continue to be active for a certain number of days,
specific to that quest, until it runs out of time. This is referred to as
the Timeout. The majority of quests have a 40 day period before this
happens.
When Timeout occurs, the Quest loses its active status and must then wait
for a Timeout period to expire. For the majority of quests that have a
standard 40 day Active period, this will be 20 days. After the 20 days have
expired, the Quest is considered Active again. This cycle repeats
indefinitely until the Quest is completed.
Let us cover the exceptions to the above now.
First, certain Quests can only appear in certain months. A month-specific
quest cannot become active unless it is the specified month. This is checked
*only* when the Quest is trying to become active: either it has just been
added to the 64 available quests, or its Timeout period has expired. An
Active quest can persist into a later month if it hasn't timed out. If it is
not the correct month, then it will wait until it is, and then immediately
make it available.
In addition, certain Quests only appear in certain *towns*. This has no
bearing on whether a Quest is active or not; it just means you won't see it
unless you're in the correct town. We shall cover this more later.
And finally, certain Quests are Repeatable. A Repeatable Quest will not
be removed from the 64 slots when completed; instead, it will undergo a
Completion Timeout: exactly the same as a normal Timeout, except that it can
be set to a different number of days. To be honest, only a very few quests
have a Completion Timeout set to a different value than the normal Timeout,
but it needs to be said. Once the Completion Timeout has expired, the Quest
will appear again as normal.
Now we move on to the Job list itself. While FFTA can keep track of 64
Quests at once, you, the player, can only see *16* of these at once,
including Quests that you are currently undertaking. Thus, the lists at the
Pub will only show 16 Quests *AT MAXIMUM*.
If there are more than 16 Active Quests at the time, some of them will
therefore be hidden to you. These quests are preempted by ones that were on
the job list before; this means that in order to get them to appear, the
quests *already* on the Job List must become inactive.
Note that quests that cannot appear in the town you are currently visiting
do not count towards the 16, even if they are active.
In any case, if you know a quest *should* be active, but you can't get it
to show, one of the best ways to solve this is to accept as many quests in
the current list and then *Cancel* all of them. A Cancelled quest
automatically goes into Timeout, and thus becomes inactive, removing it from
the 16 Quests you're allowed to see. In this manner, you should be able to
get access to a quest that is more useful to you at the time. If this still
doesn't work, then simply wait a few days; quests can Timeout by themselves,
and this will also remove them from the 16 you can see.
The above isn't a *complete* description of how everything works, but it
should answer enough questions. I will note one thing: at a certain point in
the game, the number of quests you can see at once will drop from 16 to 14.
I suspect this is due to a bug where two possible cutscenes lodge themselves
into the Active list but are never looked activated. The truth to this will,
however, have to wait until much much later when I get back to looking at
quests.

== RUMORS ==

What follows is a list of all the rumors in the game. Each rumor has a
single Appearance Requirement and a Vanishing Requirement.
A rumor will appear if the Appearance Requirement is met. It will then
stay until the Vanishing Requirement is also met. This is mostly so that
your rumor list doesn't get too clogged up (FFTA has a limit on how many
rumors it can show at once, anyhow).
Note: Requirements surrounded by :: marks have not been completely
verified through the code. Do not e-mail me about them; they'll be looked at
in time.

Some rumor and quest requirements require a certain cutscene to have been
seen. Cutscenes are handled like quests: they take up a standard quest slot
and have their own requirements. They usually activate once all requirements
have been met and you enter the correct town. This list will only show the
IDs and requirements for each cutscene, as well as giving a name to help
identify them with.

Some quests will grant a random reward as one or both of its prizes. These
rewards are divided into seven Ranks from 1 to 7. Rank 1 prizes are somewhat
weak and not very valuable, while Rank 7 are the best you're going to get
from the random reward scheme.
Each Rank has a list of 20 prizes, one of which is chosen at random. The
prize that is chosen is selected as *soon* as the quest becomes Active.

Most things in this table are self-explanatory, but we should go over them
nevertheless.
Quest: The name of the quest. If it is a numbered quest, the number will
precede it in brackets (ex: (#001) Herb Picking). Certain unnumbered
quests will have be given a category listed in square brackets to help
identify them; these categories are not part of the quest's name.
ID: The numerical ID of the quest. The lower the ID, the more priority the
quest has when ties occur. All the storyline quests are of the lowest
IDs, meaning they always have priority in ties.

Rank: The Rank of the mission, which is a measure of how difficult the quest
is or how late in the game you can expect to see it. Other than being
an indicator to the player, it serves no other known purpose.
Price: The base cost to purchase the right to go on the quest. Pubs will
adjust this price depending on your standing with them; the usual is
a 50% markup if you haven't liberated their town. Full details of
discounts can be found in the Mechanics Guide.
Clear: What must be done to complete the quest. This is what *you*, the
player, must do, not what the unit must do. [Dpatch] refers to a
dispatch quest where you must send a unit out to complete it; however,
it is you who must wait however many days or finish however many
battles to clear it. Also note that while some quests require
'Win battle' as their Clear requirements, a Negotiation option may
also be open that could also clear it.
Difficulty: Only for Dispatch Quests, this is the exact difficulty the
dispatched unit must go up against in order to complete it.
Competence versus Difficulty has been covered in the Mechanics
Guide instead for convenience.
Avail: Only for Battle Quests. This is how long the quest will be active
after accepting it. You must complete it before the time elapses,
otherwise it will be automatically cancelled for you.
Appearance Req: One of the most important factors, this is what you must do
to get the quest to appear. Once all requirements have been
met, the quest will appear *immediately* at the next
available juncture. Note that secondary requirements may
affect its appearance (only one Turf quest at a time, for
instance), and if there's too many quests on the list, it
may not be shown to you at all until you clear some off.

Appears: Once the Appearance Reqs have been met, this is how long it will
be available for you to take before it 'auto-cancels'. Once this
time limit expires, it will vanish for a specific Timeout period.
Storyline quests never auto-cancel, and some quests will never
appear in the pubs and will instead automatically occur when you
enter a certain location. The Appears field will also show whether
the quest is only located in a certain town, or whether it only
appears in a particular month. Take note of this.
Timeout: When a quest is failed, cancelled or is left for too long, it will
enter a Timeout period. This is the number of days that must pass
before it may appear again. Once the Timeout has expired, the quest
will reappear immediately, providing all other requirements for it
(month-specific quests, for example) have been met. If not, it will
await those requirements.
Repeatable: Usually, this is a simple 'No'. Quests that are completed most
often vanish forever. However, some quests are not restricted
by this, and will reappear again. The time required before they
will appear again after being *completed* is listed here. Some
quests are not repeatable in this manner, but *will* reappear
under certain circumstances. For these, only a 'Yes' will be
found in this field.

Req. Items: The Mission Items you must possess in order to accept this quest.
Most often, these items will be used up as soon as you complete
the quest, but rarely, they will not. Whether they are or not
will be mentioned in the quest itself, with the phrase '/used'.
In this guide, the rare items that are *NOT* used up by a quest
will be flagged with the label [UNUSED]. Otherwise, assume the
item is used up by the quest.
Req. Skills/Job: You may also require a specific Job and/or Clan Skills.
If a Clan Skill is required, you must have reached that
level or higher in the specific skill mentioned. If a
certain Job is required, you may only send units that are
currently in that Job.
Recommended: This hidden stat is the *recommended* Clan Skills and Job
requirement the quest has. You do not have to have them, but
if you do, a bonus is given towards the unit's Competence
rating, which dictates how much chance they have of completing
the quest.
Forbidden Job: This is rarely set, but when it is, it is something to be wary
of. If you send a unit who is in the quest's Forbidden Job,
they will never *ever* succeed in completing it.

Reward: There are three parts to this. The first part comprises of numerical
values for Gil, AP and CP. Gil is the monetary reward you get for
completing it. AP is the Ability Points you will earn for
completion. And finally, CP is the number of Clan Points that is
rewarded. Remember that 100 CP grants the next Clan Level.
Item 1: The second part of the Reward field. These are the items you will
Item 2: be rewarded upon successful completion of the quest. These rewards
may be equipment, Mission Items or a random item. Random Items are
ranked from 1 to 7, and are listed in the Quests as
'--Type ? Random Item--'. The higher the Type number, the better
the item. The full list of Random Items can be found in the
appropriate section.
Law Card 1: The final part of the Reward field, this shows what Law Cards
Law Card 2: may be rewarded. This is normally a Random Law Card, but
rarely, a specific one may be rewarded instead. Note, however,
that it is impossible to earn Law Cards until you have begun
(#006) Antilaws, even if the quest is able to give them out.
Clan Skills: Different quests grant different bonuses to Clan Skills. Like
Clan Level, you are rewarded points instead of outright levels,
and when you reach 100 points, you go up a level instead.
Points overflow into the next level so don't worry about wasting
them. In addition, each Clan Level you gain will increase some
of your Clan Skills by a specific number of levels.
Recruit: Finally, the Recruitment Set for the quest. Usually, this will be
marked with a '---', which stands for Default. This means that
unless you bring along a Mission Item with a different Set, you will
get the Basic Job set upon completing the quest. The different Sets
have been explained in the Mechanics Guide for convenience.

Two last things before we hit the list. First, Turf Defense missions are
not listed here, since they are all identical in reward and stats, and the
minor differences they have can be explained in a few sentences. All Turf
Defense quests occur randomly, where a Turf you have already freed shakes on
the map screen and it comes under attack.
