Conclusion/Credits ####################################################################### COPYWRIGHT Hiya, good person! Welcome to my next FAQ! This one is another "small- scale," but it should be useful, since it lists just about every single ability in the game and how it can be used properly. As always, the top of the file is where my contact e-mail is, so if you have a question or concern, please e-mail me! I'm always happy to take questions. Just be sure there are two things in the title of your e-mail: the name of the FAQ you need help with and the fact that you have a question or concern. Constructive critcism is welcome as well. So, with that said, let's get going! This file is Copyright (c)2006-2008 by Cameron White. All rights reserved. So let me clear up a few things: 1. All my abilties that I've listed as hard-to-get are in reference to getting them ordinarily without doing anything special. 2. Mixing was never factored in the creation of this FAQ. 3. You are free to send in your own opinions about these listed abilities, but it will not change my own opinion about the ability. I have an extremely hard head when it comes to these things... ####################################################################### VERSION INFO 0.1: Started this FAQ and added in the essentials. 1.0: Finished and sent to Ceej. 1.0a: Noticed a new move I missed, pointed out by icesaber. Nothing more. 1.2: The addition of Reader Comments, plus anything else I missed. Also, all Tornado queries now answered. 1.3: Spelling and childish errors fixed, updated copyright and contact information. ####################################################################### ABILITIES LIST Here's the layout: /\Ability Name/\ :Usefulness: (scale of 1 to 5, 5 being the best ability) What It Does (a general description of basically what happens when you use this ability) -How To Use it Properly (how can you put this ability to good use?) +Notes (Anything extra to add?) /\Beam/\ :3: When you press B, Kirby shoots out a long beam-type whip that goes from the top of Kirby's head to the ground, and then retracts. -This is the most basic abilty. In icy levels, the dark blue blocks can only be destroyed by either beam or sword, although I believe burning will also do that. If you've just lost a really nice ability, rebound with this one until you get it back. /\Hi-Jump/\ :2: When you press B, Kirby jumps really high. -This odd ability only appears in a few levels, and thankfully it's only there when you need it. Unfortunatly, you only really need it for the big cloud boss of, like, level 4 or 5. Make full use of it, then discard it. It's only semi-useful. +You need this ability in order to get a secret switch. /\Fire/\ :3 1/2: When you press and hold B, Kirby shoots out fire from his mouth. -Another good basic ability. This is also one of the few abilities that can light fuses to cannons. Don't pass this one up. +What's the difference between this and Burning, you ask? Please, read on. /\Burning/\ :4: When you press B, Kirby transforms into a fireball and shoots forward for a second, obliterating everything and anything in his path. -Much cooler than Fire, although Fire can light cannon fuses farther away from the fuse than Burning. Still, an excellent ability. Never miss an opportunity to collect this. +When you are the fireball, you are invincibly to the spike balls. Use this to your advantage. /\Ice/\ :4 1/2: When you press and hold B, Kirby shoots ice breath from his mouth. This freezes enemies into ice blocks, which you can then push out of the way. -Goodness gracious! Freezing every enemy in front of you? That's worth 10 Fire abilities any day! Too bad they mostly appear in icy areas. +What's the difference between this and Freezing, you ask? Please, read on. /\Freezing/\ :4 1/2: When you press and hold B, Kirby starts shaking. This creates an icy force field around him, freezing all enemies within vicinity into ice blocks. Powerful. -Goodness gracious! Freezing every enemy around you? That's worth 10 Burning abilities any day! Too bad they mostly appear in icy areas. /\Sleep/\ :0: You don't have to press anything. The ability makes Kirby sleep for a few seconds. -Blecch! No point to this ability at all! Don't bother using it, you'll just waste precious seconds. /\U.F.O./\ :5: When you swallow the ability, Kirby becomes a UFO, and has powerful laser abilities at his disposal. He can also fly around at his will. -My favorite ability! This is a powerhouse ability, and should be abused when you get the chance. Pressing B gives you a laser (which you can charge when you hold down B) and a Beam ability for A. +You can only use this ability until you either lose the ability or you complete the level. That's the only bad thing about this ability. It still gets a 5. /\Throw/\ :4: Press and hold B, and Kirby will act like he's swallowing something. Try to swallow an enemy, however, and Kirby instead grabs it and holds it, waiting for you. Press up, down, left, or right to aim the enemy, then press B or A to throw the enemy. -Powerful. Simply powerful. The bad thing? It's none too common. +You can only get this ability from a mini-boss. The elephant one, I think. /\Backdrop/\ :4: Press B, and Kirby runs forward, trying to find an enemy to grab. When he does, press a direction and Kirby slams that enemy that direction into the ground, killing every other enemy that gets in the way. -Same as throw in terms of use. Use it wisely and you can use it the whole game. Uncommon, though. Only the beetle mini-boss has it. /\Hammer/\ :5: When you press B, you will slam the ground with this mighty hammer. Press B in mid-air to swing it all around you and defeat your foes. -Quite useful, not only for its power, but the fact that you can break seemingly unbreakable blocks, leading you to bold new areas! +Only picked up by hammer mini-boss. /\Sword/\ :5: It's basically like the hammer, except when you press B, you'll swing your sword. Also a powerful weapon. -Never underestimate this weapon. Get used to it early, because later in the game, you'll need its awesome power to fight a boss. /\Cutter/\ :3: When you press B, a cutter-type boomerang is thrown. It'll come back to Kirby if he didn't move from where he originally threw the cutter, but if he changes his horizontal position on the screen, the cutter goes right underneath him. -A good rebounder for when you lose a really good ability. His hat looks really cool, too! /\Stone/\ :2: When you press B, Kirby instantly transforms into a rock, which will crush anything underneath him. As long as he is a rock, Kirby will not be hurt by enemies, but he will also not be able to move. -Only use it to smash the pegs that unlock new areas. Otherwise, it's useless. The smashing ability is useful in some cases, however, so don't automatically stero-type it as "useless." /\Crash/\ :3 1/2: When you press B, Kirby instantly destroys every enemy on screen and a few paces further. Very, very powerful. -Yeesh! If not for the factor that you can only use it once, this would be one seriously dangerous weapon! Use and abuse, and then abuse it some more. +This is a one-time use ability. /\Mike/\ :4 1/2: When you press B three times, each time, Kirby pulls out different items that magnify his voice. Each scream he lets out destroys enemies up to a certain range. -Much better than Crash. From the megaphone to Kirby's punk-rock-star hair and mike, this is a great ability. If you could use it infinitly, it'd get a 1500/5! (just kidding) /\Light/\ :1: When you press B, if you're in a darkened area, the entire area will be lit up, allowing you to actually see what's going on around you. -Use it only when you need it. Although you can use it to find a hidden switch one time, you actually wouldn't need light after getting the switch a few dozen times. Blow it off if you can. +This is a one-time use ability. /\Wheel/\ :3 1/2: When you press B, you'll transform into a wheel, which propels forward at an alarming rate and instantly kills any enemy in your way. -If you love to use this, master the hills. This is hard to control on downhill. Otherwise very powerful. Just don't use it during boss or mini-boss fights, and you're fine. /\Parasol/\ :2: When you press B, the parasol will shoot out some water, inflicting damage and sometimes instant death to those caught in the middle. It also slows down your descent when falling. -Meh. Not even worth it. The attack of water is nice, but slow descent is not cool: you always have control over how quickly or slowly you fall. /\Laser/\ :4: When you press B, Kirby shoots out a laser beam from his forehead. A very powerful techinque. -Necessary to complete the game's 100% requirements. Never pass this one up, either, as it'll save your armpits more than once. Also note that the laser richochets off curved hills and such, which is necessary to know in order to get a hidden switch in the Orange Ocean. /\Sparks/\ :3: When you press and hold B, Kirby stands still and emits electricity from his body. Anything within range of these "sparks" meets instant death. -A good close-range attacker. Just don't rely on it too heavily, because if you do, you'll be sorry (and trust me, you don't want to be sorry). /\Spike/\ :4 1/2: When you press and hold B, Kirby becomes a giant pincushion, and anything caught on those spikes gets a nice skewering. Very useful. -Abuse this to no end. Make them all suffer, and cover your spikes with their blood! Well, I'm not really sure if they have blood, but this is a very cool ability. Also helps you with quick exits from tight spots, since the range of spikes reaches out so long. /\Ball/\ :2 1/2: When you press B, Kirby transforms into a... well, a ball. Hold down the A button and you'll bounce up and down, eradicating any enemy within your line of bounce. Unusual, but fun! -Ok, so it doesn't help you too much, since you can easily lose control at high speeds and fall down a pit. But it's really cool to watch him bounce up and down like a pinball! Use this if you need to lighten up a bit, but like sparks, don't rely too heavily on it. /\Star Rod/\ :5: When you press B, Kirby shoots a star from the Star Rod, eradicating anything in its range. Very powerful. -You don't just get this ability. You earn it after you beat King DeDeDe in Rainbow Resort. Use its magical powers to fight the Nightmares. +Remember, this isn't an ordinary ability. You'll only use it for the Nightmare battle. Don't try to find it in the real game, since you won't find it. /\Tornado/\ :3: When you press B, you will become a mini tornado for about 5 seconds. You will have no control over the tornado, but you can eliminate any enemy that runs into you; a very powerful move. -Too unpredictable to be useful. It's still destructive if you know how to use it. +NO MORE E-MAIL!! I've gotten enough complaints about the Tornado ability. You made some valid points for its defense, but you still overrate it by WAY TOO MUCH. Tornado is NOT the best ability in the game, nor is it terrible. I'll bump it's rating to a 3, but NO MORE. If you like to use it, fine. I'll stick with my Sword, Beam, Burning, Mike, and UFO. ####################################################################### READER COMMENTS A new section being added to my FAQ, along with anything I missed. This section is for those of you who read my FAQ, but disagree with some of my scores. You may send them in IF AND ONLY IF they do not include hate mail. From: Jwall0312[at]aol.com Beam: Okay, that one I would give a 3, too. Hi-Jump: IMO, attacks that can only be used for a specific purpose should get a 1... Fire: I don't know about 3 1/2, but definitely 3. Burning: You have to learn to control it well, first. But yeah, this one gets 4. Ice: This is really no different than fire, except you have an extra step in destroying your enemies. Besides looking cool, there's no other difference except being able to knock the ice blocks around into other enemies. And since that doesn't work too well, I'd give it a 3. Freezing: Maybe 3 1/2. This one doesn't move you, see. Not nearly as fun as Burning. Sleep: Heh... well, no argument there. UFO: Er... actually, both A or B will do any of the UFO's four attacks. But you're right about the 5. Throw: Now, I have to give this one a 5. It's my personal favorite. You're invincible when you're holding an enemy and you can destroy a lot of stuff by throwing things (like LOTS of star blocks). And, you can destroy mini-bosses in style. Lastly: who says it's hard to get? Try mixing... Backdrop: 4 1/2 from me. I love this one almost as much as Throw. It's hard to control, that's my only beef with it. But it's very powerful. And once again, you can destroy mini-bosses in style. Hammer: It's okay... but 5?? I'd give it 2 1/2. Useful, maybe. But also slow and unweildy. And it only spins once in an aerial attack. Sword: Okay, I'd definitely say this is the best of the common powers. But not as good as UFO, Throw or Backdrop. So I'd say 4. Cutter: I find this to be rather cool, but I'd also give it a 3. Stone: It's attack power is practically useless. I give it a 1. Crash: IMO, one-users shouldn't get more than a 3. Mike: This one's nice... but only a 4 from me. Light: No argument here. Wheel: 1 1/2. I hate this. Hard to control, boss or no boss. I avoid this like the plague. Parasol: You forgot two things. One, you can choose to fall at normal speed by pressing down. Two, it protects you from falling objects. I give it a 3. Laser: Yes, it protects you from frontal attacks. And not much else. In this game there are a LOT of aerial attacks to defend from! But I'd give it a 3. Spark: Okay, I'd agree with this one. Spike: You've got to be kidding. This is virtually useless, because it moves absolutely zero. 1 1/2. Ball: I find this nearly impossible to control. 1... Star Rod: I actually wouldn't classify this as an ability... ####################################################################### CONCLUSION AND CREDITS First and foremost, kudos to Hal Laboratory and Nintendo for this really cool character and his many games, CJayC for his wonderful and cultivating website, icesaber for reminding me about Tornado, and everyone on the FAQ Contributor boards for their hard work.
