I.Introduction
*******************************************************************************
Over 10 years after the release of Mother 2/EarthBound, Mother 3 was finally
released in Japan for the Game Boy Advance. The game's style and dialogue is
similar to that of its predecessor, in that it contains wacky, off-the-wall
humor and silly jokes and puns. There is more emphasis on drama this time
around, however, and the game is not as light-hearted as Mother 2. The gameplay
has also undergone some changes, though the core game mechanics remain the
same. A new combo system called "Sound Battle" has been introduced, and
numerous other tweaks have been made to streamline the gameplay and quicken its
pace. Despite these few differences, fans of the previous Mother games will
likely enjoy this game as well and may even find it to be their favorite one in
the series.
This guide was written with the intent of helping those who do not have much
knowledge of Japanese to get through the game and understand what's going on.
The storyline will be explained through translations of some of the more
important or interesting text in the game, along with my own (admittedly
boring) explanations. As such, this guide contains huge spoilers, and you
should not read ahead in the guide if you do not want to know how the story
unfolds. The guide will also provide strategies on how to defeat enemies and
step by step instructions on how to progress through the game. Please keep in
mind that I do not know every secret in the game, and I may leave out a few
hard to find items or rare enemies in the guide (I will add them as I find out
about them).

II.Game Basics
*******************************************************************************
1.Controls
Control Pad: movement, menu navigation
A Button: talk/examine objects, menu selection
B Button: dash, menu cancellation
L Button: talk/examine objects, scroll through party members in menus
R Button: area map (if obtained), scroll through party members in menus
START: main menu
SELECT: HP/PP display, toggle menu description display (push this button
while in your inventory screen during battle to see what an item
looks like)
2.Saving
Saving is done by talking to the little frogs found in various places
throughout the game:
"*Boing*
Would you like to save?
>Yes >No"
Select "Yes" to save and select a file. If a previous save is already
written on a file, the game will ask you if you want to overwrite. Select
"yes" to do so.
3.Naming Characters
When you start a "New Game" or whenever you meet a new party member, you
will be prompted to enter a name for that character. If you can't read
Japanese and want to use Roman letters, select the "ABC" option. The
options at the bottom of the naming screen are as follows:
DON'T CARE | HIRAGANA | KATAKANA | ABC | BACK | END
Select the "Don't Care" option to use the default name, select "back" to
erase a letter, and select "end" to confirm a name. Hiragana and Katakana
refer to the two different Japanese alphabets.
4.Main Menu
Press START outside of battle and 4 or 5 icons will appear at the top of
the screen. This is the main menu, and the icons are as follows:
GOODS | EQUIP | PSI | STATUS | SLEEP
The PSI icon appears later in the game, as will a counter showing how much
money (DP) your party has.
a)Goods
(Icon looks like a bag)
Select this icon to go into your party's inventory. Each party member
can carry up to 16 items, including weapons and armor that are equipped.
To scroll through each party member's inventory, press the R or L
button. At the top of the screen, you will see each party member's face
and a key icon at the end. Select the key icon to view any important or
essential items you have. These items cannot be sold or thrown away and
do not take up inventory space.
When you select an item with the A button, three options will appear:
"Use"
"Give"
"Throw Away"
Select the "give" option to transfer an item to another party member's
inventory and the "throw away" option to discard an item (note that some
items cannot be thrown away).
b)Equip
(Icon looks like a bat or a club)
Select this icon to enter the equipment screen. Here you can equip
weapons and armor to boost your party members' stats. You can also view
each party member's stats and what is currently equipped:
[char. name] | [weapon]
[level] |
[max HP] | [body armor]
[max PP] |
[Offense] | [head armor]
[Defense] |
[IQ] | [other armor]
[Speed] |
Use the control pad to select either weapon or a type of armor and press
the A button to view which items the character can equip. Note that an
item must be in the character's inventory in order to be equipped. Use
the control pad to view each item, and you can see how each item will
affect the character's stats on the left side of the screen. You can
also remove an equipped item if you want to do so.
c)PSI
(Icon resembles a crosshair)
This icon will appear when you have a party member that can use PSI.
Select this icon to view what PSI abilities your party member(s) have
and also to use any recovery PSI moves to heal your party. The two PSI
moves you can use from this screen are Lifeup and Healing, and Lifeup is
always at the top of the list.
d)Status
(Icon is a silhouette of a person)
Select this icon to view your party members' stats, experience points,
and equipped items:
[char. name]
[level] [current HP]
[Offense] [current PP]
[Defense] [weapon]
[IQ] [body armor]
[Speed] [head armor]
[experience pts.] [other armor]
[ex. pts. for next level] [special ability]
Offense determines how much damage is inflicted by a character's
physical attacks. The higher the value, the more damage is inflicted.
Defense determines how much damage is received when a character is
attacked. Note that this only affects damage from physical attacks and
not PSI attacks.
IQ affects the offensive power of PSI attacks. The effect is pretty
small, however, and the power of your PSI attacks will probably not
change by much through the course of the game.
Speed determines the order in which characters attack in battle. The
higher a character's Speed, the earlier they attack.
e)Sleep
(Icon is two Z's)
Select this icon to put your Game Boy Advance into sleep mode.
5.Battle System
The battle system in Mother 3 is pretty much a standard turn-based battle
system with a few twists. Battles begin when you make contact with an
enemy. If you meet each other face to face, the screen will turn blue and
battle will begin normally. If you touch the enemy from behind, however,
the screen will turn green and you will get one free round to attack the
enemy. If the enemy touches you from behind, the screen will turn red and
the enemy will get a free attack. Getting caught by an enemy from behind
usually occurs when you try to run away from an enemy, so be sure not to
avoid battles as much as possible. Note that if you lose a battle, you
will lose half of the money the party was carrying.
There are five icons at the top of the battle screen:
BASH | GOODS | PSI/SPECIAL ABILITIES | DEFEND | RUN AWAY
a)Bash
(Icon is a musical note)
This is each party member's standard attack. With this attack, you can
take advantage of the "Sound Battle" system and pull off combos by
rhythmically tapping the A button in time with the background music.
Each time you press the A button, your character will make an additional
attack, and with good timing you can get a maximum of 16 hits. This is a
powerful technique that can sometimes double or even triple the amount
of damage you inflict, so don't neglect it.
If you are having trouble getting combos, pause just before your
character is about to attack. Concentrate on the music (taking your eyes
off the screen may help) and tap your GBA, DS, or controller with your
thumb without pushing any buttons. Once you think you have gotten the
rhythm down, move your thumb over the A button and keep tapping. Don't
be discouraged if you don't get a very high combo. You can expect to get
maybe 10 or so hits with some of the easier songs after some practice
and about 2~5 hits for some of the more difficult ones.
There are some other things you can do in the game to help you learn the
rhythm of each song. If you put an enemy to sleep (by PSI or Duster's
special ability), you will be able to explicitly hear the rhythm of the
sleeping enemy. You can also practice fighting an enemy at any time with
an item called the Battle Log. This item can be obtained in Chapter 2,
and it allows you to view and battle any enemy you have encountered in
the game. Practicing with the Battle Log is safe and easy, since the
enemy will not attack you and you can fight for as long as you want.
Note that some songs have irregular rhythms. Most of these songs don't
appear until the middle part of the game and are harder to get good
combos with. These songs can have parts where the rhythm speeds up or
slows down, parts where you should not tap the A button at all, or have
rhythms that are just plain weird. Using the Battle Log and putting
enemies to sleep is the best way to learn the rhythms for these songs.
b)Goods
(Icon looks like a bag)
Select this icon to have a character use an item from his or her
inventory. Push the SELECT button while in the inventory screen to see
what each item looks like and a short description.
c)PSI/Special Abilities
(Icon resembles a crosshair)
Select this item to have a character use a PSI move or a special
ability. For a list and explanation of each character's special moves,
see the "Party Members" section below.
PSI moves are organized according to their type:
>Offense
>Recover
>Assist
Select which type you want and select the PSI move from the list on the
right.
d)Defend
(Icon is a red cross)
Select this option if you want a party member to spend a round
defending. This will cause any damage inflicted by a physical attack to
be cut by half. Note that this will not work on all enemy attacks and
will not work against any PSI attack.
e)Run Away
(Icon is an arrow pointing down)
Select this option to get out of a battle. This option should only be
used as a last resort when in a dangerous situation or if you don't feel
like fighting. Note that you are not guaranteed to succeed in running
away from a battle and you cannot run away at all from boss battles and
other important fights.
6.Money and Shopping
Money will become available at the beginning of Chapter 4 in the form of
"DP." DP is earned by defeating enemies and withdrawn by talking to the
little frogs that save your game:
"*Boing*
Do you need something?
>Yes >No
Would you like to save or would you like a transaction?
>Save >DP Transaction"
Select "Yes" and "DP Transaction" and you will see the DP withdraw/deposit
window. This is pretty much exactly like an ATM machine. The top number is
the amount of DP in your deposit, the middle number is the amount you want
to transfer, and the bottom number is the amount the party is carrying.
The top two tabs indicate whether you are depositing or withdrawing; the
left tab is for deposits, and the right tab is for withdrawals. Use the
control pad to set the amount of DP you want to transfer.
DP is used for buying and selling items. When you talk to a salesperson,
you will be taken to the shopping screen. The three options on the left
are:
"Buy"
"Sell"
"Quit"
Select "buy" and you will be prompted to select which party member you
want to buy items for. Once you do that, you will see all the items you
can buy and their prices. If an item is grayed out, it either means you do
not have enough money to buy the item, or the selected party member's
inventory is full. Press the L or R button to select different party
members, or press B to go back to the party member selection menu.
If you select a weapon or armor, the top of the screen will indicate which
party member can equip that item with an "OK" sign and an "Up" or "Down"
to indicate whether that item will increase or decrease the character's
stats. When you buy the item, you will have the option to equip the item
on the selected party member right away. If you do so, you will then be
given the option to sell the previously equipped item. In most cases you
will probably want to sell, although there are a few items you can only
get in limited quantities or in special cases and may want to hold on to.
Selling works in a similar way to buying, only you choose which item you
want to sell from your inventory, and grayed out items are those that
can't be sold. Press the B button or select "quit" to stop shopping.
7.Item Storage
Starting from Chapter 4, you will be able to meet a man wearing a beanie
and standing next to a blue wagon. This man can be found in various places
throughout the game and allows you to store or withdraw items for free. He
is useful when you have unwanted items that you cannot sell or items that
you do not need until later.
When you talk to him, you will be taken to the item storage screen. The
three options on the left are:
"Store"
"Withdraw"
"Quit"
Select "Store" and you will be prompted to select a party member. Once you
do so, you will see the items in the character's inventory and be able to
select which items to store. Withdrawing works in a similar way, only you
can see which items are currently in storage and you can select which item
to take out. Press the B button or select "quit" to exit.
8.Hot Springs
Hot Springs can be found in various places throughout the game and are
used for completely recovering your party. Enter a hot spring and stay in
there for about 7 seconds. The party will recover all their HP/PP and most
status effects will be cured as well. Sleeping on sofas or on some beds or
entering an "Amazing Capsule" (aka Instant Revitalizing Machine in
EarthBound) will have an identical effect.
*******************************************************************************
III.General Information
*******************************************************************************
1.Party Members
a)Lucas
(or "Luca")
"The younger twin brother
He's a nice boy"
The first character you control in the game is the main protagonist. He is
the son of Flint and Hinawa and is a bit of a momma's boy. He has high
Offense and IQ, good Defense, and moderate Speed, and his weapons of choice
are sticks, staffs, and bats. His special ability is PSI, which he learns a
bit later in the game.
His high Offense makes him a good physical attacker, and pulling off good
combos with him can often inflict very heavy damage (sometimes more than
his PSI attacks). In terms of PSI, however, he is more of a defensive
character, since he only has two directly offensive PSI attacks and
everything else targets the party. His Lifeup is almost essential later on
in the game, and his shielding and stat boosting moves can greatly help the
party survive battles. For those reasons, I recommend you have Lucas focus
mostly on defense when in boss battles and use physical attacks when
attacking. His PSI attacks (PK Love and PK Flash) are mostly useful when
facing a group of normal enemies or when you are in a dangerous situation.
His PSI abilities are:
*Lifeup[alpha] (5 PP) | *Lifeup[beta] (9 PP)
*Lifeup[gamma] (16 PP) | *Lifeup[omega] (28 PP)
Refresh (20 PP) | *Healing[alpha] (4 PP)
*Healing[beta] (8 PP) | *Healing[gamma] (18 PP)
*Healing[omega] (30 PP) | PK Love[alpha] (10 PP)
PK Love[beta] (20 PP) | PK Love[gamma] (35 PP)
PK Love[omega] (50 PP) | PK Flash (12 PP)
Shield[alpha] (6 PP) | Shield[omega] (18 PP)
Counter[alpha] (12 PP) | Counter[omega] (28 PP)
Psycho-Shield[alpha] (8 PP) | Psycho-Shield[omega] (20 PP)
Psycho-Counter[alpha] (18 PP) | Psycho-Counter[omega] (34 PP)
Offense Up[alpha] (6 PP) | Offense Up[omega] (18 PP)
Defense Up[alpha] (6 PP) | Defense Up[omega] (18 PP)
*denotes PSI abilities that can be used outside of battle
b)Flint
"A strong, kind, and dependable father"
Flint is Lucas and Claus's father and Hinawa's husband. His high Offense
and Defense make him a strong physical attacker, which is good since he
will be the only party member you can control most of the time when you
play as him. He cannot use any PSI, so always be sure to carry food items
and use them wisely.
Flint's special attacks are as follows:
Brandish Charge Forward
Charge Up Stand Firm
Brandish: Attacks all enemies on screen. This attack has the same offensive
power as Flint's standard attack, but you cannot combo with it.
Charge Forward: Flint attacks with all his strength. It has very low
accuracy but always gets a SMAAAASH!! hit when it connects.
Charge Up: Increase Offense by about 20%; only works once per battle
Stand Firm: Increase Defense by about 20%; only works once per battle
c)Boney
"A brave and intelligent dog"
Boney is Lucas's unusually intelligent and dependable dog. He has very high
Speed but rather low HP, Defense, and Offense. He almost always attacks
first in battle, and he makes a pretty good healer if you give him most of
your food items since he has the best chance of recovering a character as
quickly as possible. He can't use any PSI, however, so it's often a good
idea to give him your offensive items, such as Bombs, Rockets, and Salt
Water Guns.
Boney's special ability is "sniff." With this move, you can determine the
type of an enemy (e.g. Mechanical, Chimera, etc.) and their
vulnerabilities. If you don't know what attacks are effective against an
enemy (and if you can read Japanese), you should use this move to determine
what PSI attacks and special abilities to use.
d)Duster
"A bit of an eccentric
but he has some useful skills"
Duster is called a "thief" in the game, but he actually does not steal in
the conventional sense. His main job is to sneak into a castle and recover
a certain artifact at one point in the game, and he can utilize a variety
of items as his special attacks. Duster has very good Speed and good
Offense but cannot use PSI. I recommend you give him some of your best food
items, as he often attacks early in battle and has a decent amount of HP,
making him a dependable healer.
Duster has a variety of special abilities. Once in a while, at the very
beginning of battle, Duster will get in a swift attack at the enemy before
anything else happens. This early attack has the same offensive power as
Duster's standard attack, but you cannot combo with it and its occurrence
is random. Also, if an enemy manages to approach you from behind, Duster
can once in a while make the enemy turn around instead. His other special
attacks are as follows:
Wall Staple Siren Beetle
Hypnotic Pendulum Smoke Bomb
Scary Mask Tickle Feather
Wall Staple: Solidifies a target for two or three rounds.
Siren Beetle: Makes an enemy turn around and unable to attack for two
turns. This attack seems to have a higher success rate than
the Wall Staple attack and is generally more reliable.
Hypnotic Pendulum: Makes an enemy fall asleep; it is particularly
effective against enemies vulnerable to sleep. Use this
attack when you want to hear the rhythm of an enemy's
battle music.
Smoke Bomb: Makes an enemy start uncontrollably crying; it is effective
against enemies vulnerable to crying. I recommend you use this
only in long battles, as it is not very useful in battles that
last only two or three rounds.
Scary Mask: Decreases an enemy's Offense by about 20% the first time, 8%
the second and third times, and 0% thereafter.
Tickle Feather: Decreases an enemy's Defense by about 20% the first time,
8% the second and third times, and 0% thereafter.
You can use these moves as many times as you want in battle, but they are
not guaranteed to be successful. The main advantage of Duster's abilities
is that they do not consume PP and are of equal effectiveness to their PSI
counterparts. Use Boney's "sniff" move (or read this guide) to determine
which special attacks are effective against which enemies.
e)Kumatora
"A strong and clever
tomboyish girl"
The name "Kumatora" literally means "Bear-Tiger," and it is an appropriate
name for this character. Kumatora is an extremely tomboyish girl who has a
rather fierce personality, but she is kind enough to her friends and
allies. She is introduced as the "princess" of Osohe Castle, but there is
more to this girl than the game initially lets on.
Her specialty is offensive PSI, and as such she is not much of a physical
attacker. Her Offense, Speed, and max HP are moderate at best, but her high
IQ and max PP make up for those deficiencies. Don't be afraid to use her
PSI attacks even against normal enemies.
Kumatora's PSI moves are:
*Lifeup[alpha] (5 PP) | *Lifeup[beta] (9 PP)
*Healing[alpha] (4 PP) | PSI Magnet[alpha] (0 PP)
PSI Magnet[omega] (0 PP) | PK Starstorm (48 PP)
PK Fire[alpha] (6 PP) | PK Fire[beta] (12 PP)
PK Fire[gamma] (20 PP) | PK Fire[omega] (40 PP)
PK Freeze[alpha] (5 PP) | PK Freeze[beta] (10 PP)
PK Freeze[gamma] (18 PP) | PK Freeze[omega] (28 PP)
PK Thunder[alpha] (7 PP) | PK Thunder[beta] (15 PP)
PK Thunder[gamma] (21 PP) | PK Thunder[omega] (32 PP)
PK Ground (43 PP) | Hypnosis[alpha] (6 PP)
Hypnosis[omega] (18 PP) | Paralysis[alpha] (8 PP)
Paralysis[omega] (24 PP) | Brainshock[alpha] (7 PP)
Brainshock[omega] (22 PP) | Offense Down[alpha] (7 PP)
Offense Down[omega] (20 PP) | Defense Down[alpha] (7 PP)
Defense Down[omega] (20 PP) |
*denotes PSI abilities that can be used outside of battle
f)Salsa
(or "Sarusa")
"A monkey that can endure anything
for the love of his girlfriend"
The name "Salsa" is a pun on the Japanese word for monkey, "saru," and the
Japanese spelling of salsa, "sarusa." With an adorable demeanor and an
amusing name, Salsa is one of the most likable monkeys you'll find in any
video game.
Salsa's stats are pretty low all around except for perhaps his Speed. His
only real strengths are his special attacks:
Apologize Crowd Pleaser
Dance Monkey Mimic
Apologize: Solidifies an enemy for a few rounds.
Crowd Pleaser: Solidifies an enemy for a few rounds. I've found this move
to be a bit more reliable than Apologize.
Dance: Increases a random party member's Offense, Defense, or Speed or
decreases an enemy's stats. It can also cause an enemy to turn
around or have some other random effect. Use this move when you
don't have anything else worthwhile for Salsa to do.
Monkey Mimic: Salsa waits for the enemy to attack him, at which point Salsa
will use the same attack against the enemy. The mimicked
attack has the same offensive power as the enemy's attack,
regardless of how high or low Salsa's Offense is. This move
is useful when fighting a group of enemies, as Salsa can
attack multiple times if he is hit more than once. Note that
this move will not mimic status affecting attacks.
You will only control Salsa at a few points in the game, so don't spend too
much time leveling him up.
2.Status Effects
Most status effects can be cured by the PSI move Healing or particular items.
Some items cure only specific status effects, while items like the Secret
Herb (looks like a pink bottle) and Lifenoodles (looks like a bowl) can heal
practically anything except for solidification. Hot Springs and its
equivalent cure most status effects as well. Generally speaking, it is
usually best to heal a status effect after a battle is over, unless you are
in a long boss battle and the status effect is particularly detrimental.
a)Burn
Effect: suffer about 4% of max HP worth of damage each round
Symbol: none
Cure: wait two turns or end the battle
This status effect is usually caused by PK Fire or another fire attack.
b)Crying
Effect: reduces the accuracy of a character's physical attack by about
50%
Symbol: a tear
Cure: Healing, use Eyedrops, or end the battle
This status effect can greatly hinder a party member that relies on
physical attacks. You can use Healing to cure the status effect, but
often times its better to start using offensive PSI or to just keep using
standard attacks anyway and end the battle as quickly as possible. Note
that a party member cannot miss an attack if they are in the middle of a
combo.
c)Feel Strange
Effect: a character will attack a random target or do a random action;
reverses movement control outside of battle
Symbol: an amorphous black blob
Cure: Healing, use a Paper Fan, or walk a few steps outside of battle
If a party member feels strange, it's sometimes better to just leave them
alone. The worst that can happen is if the affected character attacks
your own party or uses one of your good items, but these are usually
things you should be able to deal with.
d)Flea
Effect: occasionally makes a party member fail to use special abilities
Symbol: a black dot with a bouncing line behind it
Cure: Healing or Flea Powder
This status effect can be detrimental if a PSI user is affected by it, so
try to heal if Lucas or Kumatora is infested during an extended battle.
If the party is affected during a normal battle, heal after the battle is
over. This status effect persists outside of battle until cured.
e)Memory Loss
Effect: renders a character unable to use PSI or special abilities
Symbol: a question mark
Cure: Healing, a Reminder Bell, wait a few turns, or end the battle
Like the Flea status effect, memory loss can be very damaging if a PSI
user is affected by it. Be sure to heal if in a boss battle.
f)Nausea
Effect: renders a character unable to eat food items
Symbol: a gray cloud
Cure: Healing or a Refreshing Mint
This status effect is really only a problem in Chapter 2; use a
Refreshing Mint or enter a Hot Spring (or equivalent) to cure it. Extra
Refreshing Mints can be traded with a ghost merchant inside Osohe Castle.
This status effect persists outside of battle until cured.
g)Paralysis
Effect: a character may fail to attack
Symbol: two zigzag lines
Cure: Healing, Paralysis Remover, wait five turns, or end the battle
This status effect can be quite harmful, so use Healing if an important
party member is affected by it in a major battle.
h)Poison
Effect: suffer about 5% of max HP worth of damage each turn;
take 2 HP of damage for every 8 steps taken outside of battle
Symbol: a skull
Cure: Healing or an Antidote
It's usually best to cure this status effect after the battle is over,
unless you are in a long fight.
i)Sleep
Effect: renders a character unable to do anything for a few rounds
Symbol: two Z's
Cure: Healing, an Alarm Fly, ending the battle, or being attacked
Sleep can be a very useful status effect. By putting enemies to sleep,
you will be able to explicitly hear the rhythm of that enemy's battle
music and make it easier to execute combos. It can also be useful to put
an enemy to sleep when fighting a group and focus on defeating its
cohorts. Characters that are asleep have a good chance of waking up if
attacked. If one of your party members fall asleep, it's usually best to
just wait until they wake up or end the battle.
j)Solidify
Effect: renders a character unable to do anything for two or three rounds
Symbol: none
Cure: wait a few turns or end the battle
Solidification is usually caused by special attacks, such as Duster's
Wall Staple attack or PK Freeze. This status effect cannot be healed by
PSI or items, so you'll just have to wait until it wears off.
3.PSI Information
PSI refers to the psionic abilities that certain party members can learn in
the game. Each PSI move consumes a certain amount of PP, and you cannot use a
move if the character does not have enough. PP can be replenished by either
recovering at a hot spring and equivalent, or using PP recovery food items.
PSI moves are learned when a character reaches a certain level. Once a party
member reaches a particular level, the character will eventually fall under a
fever, indicated by white spots that appear above the head. While feverish,
the party will not be able to dash, but it will not affect anything else. The
fever goes away after the party walks a number of steps, at which point a new
PSI move will be learned.
OFFENSE
a)PK Love
(aka PSI Rockin in EarthBound)
NOTE: The name of this attack will be whatever you entered as your
"favorite thing" at the very beginning of the game.
This is Lucas's special PSI attack. Each version of this attack is
learned when you reach a certain point in the game. It is a powerful move
that inflicts a significant amount of damage to all enemies on screen,
but it consumes quite a bit of PP.
I recommend you only use this attack when facing two or more enemies or
when you are in a dangerous situation. Otherwise, use Lucas's standard
attack instead. In terms of PSI, Lucas is more of a defensive character,
and it is often more helpful to have him focus on recovering and
shielding rather than using this attack during difficult fights.

b)PK Flash
PP Cost: 12
This attack randomly causes uncontrollable crying, feeling strange,
paralysis, or instant defeat. Lucas learns this move when you reach a
certain point in the game, and there is only one version of this attack.
The effectiveness of this move is unpredictable, and the only way to
determine whether an enemy is vulnerable to it is through trial and
error. As such, I don't recommend you use it that much unless you are in
an experimental mood or if you can't think of anything else to do. It may
come in handy if you want to make a group of enemies start crying, but
other than that, it's a little too risky to use most of the time.
c)PK Starstorm
PP Cost: 48
Damage: 650~750 HP
This is Kumatora's equivalent of PK Love, and she learns it when you
reach a certain point in the game. It inflicts damage to all enemies on
screen, and it is slightly weaker than Lucas's PK Love[omega]. There is
only one version of this attack.
PK Starstorm is mostly useful when fighting a group of normal enemies. In
boss battles, it is often more cost effective to use Kumatora's other PSI
attacks, since Starstorm consumes quite a bit of PP.
d)PK Fire
This attack causes fire damage to all enemies on screen. It's
effectiveness varies depending on the target, as some enemies are
vulnerable to it, while others are resistant or completely immune. It is
mostly useful for softening up a group of enemies or bosses that are weak
against fire. This attack will occasionally burn its target (damage of
about 4% of max HP per round). Organic and Organic Chimera type enemies
tend to be susceptible to this attack.

e)PK Freeze
This attack deals ice damage to a single enemy. It's effectiveness varies
depending on the target, as some enemies are vulnerable to it, while
others are resistant or completely immune. Because of its relatively low
PP cost and potentially high damage, Freeze is quite useful against both
normal enemies and some bosses. Since Kumatora's Offense is low, this
attack can sometimes be a good alternative to her standard attack. Freeze
will occasionally solidify a target for two or three rounds. Bug and
Human type enemies tend to be susceptible to this attack.

f)PK Thunder
Depending on what version of this attack you use, this move will summon
one to four lightning bolts that either strike a random enemy or hit
nothing at all. Its effectiveness varies depending on the target, as some
enemies are vulnerable to it, while others are resistant or immune.
Thunder is useful in many boss battles since it often inflicts more
damage than Fire or Freeze, and quite a few bosses are vulnerable to it.
Almost all Mechanical and Mechanical Chimera type enemies are susceptible
to this attack. Thunder occasionally causes paralysis (enemy may fail to
attack). Thunder is also unaffected by Psycho-Shields.

g)PK Ground
PP Cost: 43
Level Learned: Kumatora (60)
Effect: causes five randomly targeted hits
Damage: 7~10% of max HP
The last PSI move Kumatora is likely to learn is also a rather unusual
one. This attack will cause five randomly targeted hits. These hits will
never miss unless you are fighting a flying enemy, so all five hits will
damage a single enemy if you are fighting only one foe. Each hit takes
away roughly 7~10% of the target's max HP (less for bosses and some
enemies). As such, the higher the amount of HP an enemy has, the more
damage they will receive from this attack. Unless you spend a lot of time
leveling up, this move will only be available to use against the last few
bosses in the game. This move may occasionally cause a target to trip and
solidify for two or three turns. It is also unaffected by Psycho-Shields.
RECOVER
a)Lifeup
Food items play an important role in this game, but after awhile you will
likely start phasing out the use of food items in favor of Lifeup.
Recovery is absolutely essential in staying alive in this game, and
nothing is better or more convenient to that end than Lifeup.
Lifeup can be used both inside and outside of battle. To use Lifeup
outside of battle, push START and select the third icon from the left. A
window should appear showing all the PSI moves a party member has. Lifeup
should be one of the few moves that is not grayed out, and it is always
at the top of the list.

b)Healing
Almost all status effects in this game can be cured by Healing, but be
careful about when you use this move. If you use Healing as soon as a
party member gets a status effect in the middle of battle, an enemy may
cause the same status effect again and you will have wasted one of your
turns. Often times, it is better to focus on attacking and use Healing
after the battle is over. As such, Healing should only be used in battle
when in a long fight, where status effects are most detrimental. A few
status effects, such as solidification, cannot be cured by Healing.
To use Healing outside of battle, press START and select the third icon
from the left. A list of each party member's PSI moves should appear, and
Healing should be one of the few moves not grayed out. Healing always
appears just below Lifeup.

c)Refresh
PP Cost: 20
Level Learned: Lucas (58)
Effect: the entire party recovers 10% of their max HP each turn for five
turns
This is a recovery move Lucas is likely to learn near the end of the
game. In most games I would not use a move like this too much, but
because of Mother 3's rolling HP counter this move can potentially save
a party member's life. Typically, if you are going to use Refresh, you
will probably want to use it from the first round of battle or in
preparation for a strong attack from an enemy.
d)PSI Magnet
This move allows Kumatora to take away an enemy's PP and add it to her
own. It is usually not necessary to use this move, since there are ample
hot springs and Amazing Capsules in the game. It's best used when facing
a group of PSI using enemies and when Kumatora doesn't have anything
better to do.

ASSIST
a)Shield
This move will reduce the damage inflicted by physical attacks by 50%. It
can withstand up to three hits before it disappears. Shield can be very
useful against strong bosses and in long battles. Using this move in
conjunction with Defense Up or Offense Down can reduce the damage the
party suffers by a substantial amount and turn a difficult fight into an
easy one. Note, however, that some enemies can remove shields, and
shields do not provide protect against all attacks (e.g. "fire a beam").

c)Psycho-Shield
Psycho-Shield reduces the amount of damage inflicted by PSI attacks by
50%. It can withstand up to three hits before it disappears. This move
will probably not get as much use as the regular Shield, but it can be
useful in a few boss battles. The omega version of this move is
particularly important in defending against attacks such as Fire or
Starstorm that target the entire party and cause all kinds of trouble.
The shield will not protect against Recover and Assist type attacks, such
as PSI Magnet or Offense Down. It also does not protect against PK
Thunder.

e)Offense Up
This move will increase its target's Offense by about 20% the first time,
8% the second and third times, and 0% thereafter. It can make a pretty
big difference in the amount of damage you inflict, especially if you are
able to compound the increase with combos. A standard attack that
inflicts 51 HP of damage, for example, can jump up to 106 HP with one use
of Offense Up. If you're able to get a 16 hit combo, that jump could go
from 126 HP to 243 HP. Granted, my example is an extreme case that won't
come up too often, but you can usually expect a 10~30 HP increase in
damage with one use of this move. This is most useful in long boss
battles, so don't neglect this move during an important fight.

conjunction with Offense Down or Shield can greatly reduce the damage the
party suffers, so try to use it if you are having trouble in a boss
battle.

g)Hypnosis
When successful, this move will put an enemy to sleep. Sleep can be
useful if you want to hear the rhythm of the battle music or want to take
an enemy out of a fight when facing a group. This move is usually
overshadowed by Duster's Hypnotic Pendulum, however, since Duster's
special ability does not consume PP. Only use this move if you can't use
Duster's ability or if you want to use it in conjunction with his attack
to increase your chances of success.

h)Paralysis
This move, when successful, will paralyze an enemy. While paralyzed, an
enemy may occasionally fail to attack and waste a turn. It's advisable
you only use this attack against enemies vulnerable to paralysis, as it
may not work at all against some enemies. Note that the effects of
paralysis will go away after five rounds.

i)Brainshock
This move, when successful, will make enemies feel strange. Enemies that
feel strange may attack itself or its cohorts, but its occurrence is
completely random. Feeling strange is not a particularly useful status
effect, so Brainshock is limited in its use. If you want to use it, only
target enemies that are vulnerable to feeling strange.

move is usually overshadowed by Duster's Scary Mask, since his special
ability does not consume PP. Only use this attack when Duster's ability
is not available or if you want to use it in conjunction with his attack.
Using this move along with Defense Up or Shield can greatly reduce the

trouble in a boss fight.

"Welcome to the world of Mother 3!
Amidst a peaceful and beautiful scenery
stands a simple little mountain house.
It is the home of the young protagonist's grandfather.
The young twins have come to visit their grandfather's house with their mother
and by the end of the day will go back home to Tatsumairi Village,
where their father waits.
The fun-filled times of playing with Dragos, the big and good-natured animals,
and eating their mother's home-cooked meals while sitting around the dining
table have passed quickly.
Now, all they have to do is pass through the forest and go home.
There are no traces of any ominous signs.
A pigeon flies into the evening sky, carrying a letter that says, "We will be
coming home soon."
Where is this place, what time period is it,
is it a tragedy or a comedy...
All that remains a mystery, and the story begins."

I will be using the default names to refer to each character in the guide.
Next, you will be asked to enter your favorite food and favorite thing. Your
favorite food won't have much of an impact on the game, but your favorite thing
will be the name of Lucas's special PSI attack. The default for each are:
Favorite food: fluffy omelets
Favorite thing: Love
Finally, you will be asked to set the text speed and window color:

V.Prologue
*******************************************************************************
"Nowhere Isle"
"Tatsumairi Village"
"In a place past Terry Forest"
"Hinawa's father, Alec's house"
1.Grandpa's House
The game will begin with Lucas sleeping in bed and Claus banging on the door,
trying to get him to wake up.
"Lucaaaaaas!
How long are you going to be asleep?
Get up and let's play!
Hurry up and get out of bed!
The Drago brought her baby with her!
It's reeeaaally cute!!
Hurry up and come!"
Press any direction on the control pad to get up and out of bed. Walk down
the stairs and try to walk out the door. Lucas's mother will stop you and
tell you to change out of your jammies. Answer yes to go back upstairs and
change. If you answer "no" Lucas's mother won't let him out of the house:
"Then stay inside the house with your pajamas on forever."
In a video game "forever" literally means forever, so answer "yes."
Once changed, walk back downstairs and out of the house. From this rather
wide open area, there is one exit to the east and another to the south. You
will have to go east, since the game will not allow you to go south. If you
do try to go south, the game will tell you that there is a trail of ants on
the ground and you might step on them.
Standing in front of the eastern exit is a frog. Talk to it to save:
"A story is a long stretch of memories.
A memory and a memory become remembered and become memories.
If you don't record your memories, they will be forgotten.
That is why you should tell the frog your memories up to this point.
People call that saving.
Now.
*Boing*
Would you like to save?
>Yes >No"
Select "yes" to save. These frogs are found all over the place throughout the
game, so you'll have ample opportunities to save.
In the next area, you'll find Claus playing with a "Drago," a large
reptilian animal that resembles a dinosaur. Despite their appearance, they're
tame and friendly. Claus will tell Lucas to join in on the fun and tackle the
Drago. Whether you answer "yes" or "no" when prompted won't make a
difference; you'll still have to tackle it.
Tackling is done by dashing into objects and creatures. Press and hold the B
button for about a second and let go. Your character will then start
running. Run into the Drago Claus was playing with and Lucas will tackle it.
Next, talk to Claus and he will explain that Dragos enjoy being tackled--the
harder the tackle, the happier they feel.
All of a sudden, a belligerent little mole cricket will appear out of nowhere
and start picking a fight with Lucas and Claus. He saw them play fighting
with the Drago and couldn't help but join in. The first battle will then
begin.
The mole cricket is an easy opponent, and the fight will serve as an
introduction to the battle system. The four icons at the top are:
BASH | GOODS | DEFEND | RUN AWAY
Select "bash" for both characters to attack. This is a good time to practice
the "Sound Battle" system. Try to get the rhythm of the background music down
and tap the A button in time with the song. With good timing, you should be
able to get multiple hits in one turn.
Once you win the fight, Hinawa will come and call everyone to dinner. Alec
will then briefly break the fourth wall and explain how to save to you, the
player, and then run off to join the rest of the family.
During the meal, Hinawa tells the kids to get ready to go home once they're
finished eating. They will have to walk through the woods to get home, so
they'll have to leave soon. She will walk outside and you will read her
letter to Flint, saying how much of a good time they had and that they will
be home by nightfall.

on Flint.
b)Nut Bread
"Konomi Pan"
(A round piece of bread)
Use: recovers 30 HP
Location: northeast of Flint's house
northwest corner of the "Crossroad"
The Crossroad is the area north of the main town square. It is where the
bell tower is located. Be sure to obtain this food item whenever you can.
Food items will be Flint's only means of recovery, and this item will be
very useful early on.
c)Edible Mushroom
"Taberareru Kinoko"
(A mushroom)
Use: recovers 20 HP
Location: southeast corner of the "Crossroad"
Obtain this food item and use it when you need to recover HP outside of
battle.
d)Nuts
"Nattsu"
(A small, oblong nut)
Use: recovers 5 HP; can also be turned into Nut Cookies or Nut Bread
Location: found on the ground at the "Crossroad"
A little bit later in the chapter, you will be able to give a few of these
items to a baker in town and have her turn them into Nut Cookies or Nut
Bread. The baker's house is on the western edge of the main town square,
and she can take 1 Nut and make a Nut Cookie or 3 Nuts and make Nut Bread.
e)Nut Cookie
"Konomi Kukkii"
(A small cookie)
Use: recovers 15 HP
Obtained: talk to Mike near the entrance to the forest
This food item is only useful early in the chapter. Use it when you need
to recover HP outside of battle.
f)Goat Ring

(A pink ring)
Use: armor for Flint
Location: next to Isaac's house
This item can be found next to the path that leads to the hot spring in
the forest.
g)Riter's Stave
"Raita no Kakuzai"
(A think plank of wood)
Use: weapon for Flint
Location: next to Riter's body in the forest
Examine this item to obtain it after talking to Riter. This weapon will
slightly decrease Flint's Speed, but the boost in Offense is worth the
tradeoff. Discard the Normal Staff (Boukkire) if it was previously
equipped.
h)Antidote
"Dokukeshi"
(A small blue bottle)
Use: cures poison
Location: one of the rooms in the Inn
You can obtain this item after rescuing Fel and returning to the Inn.

Damage: 10~12 HP
-Breathe fire
Damage: 3~5 HP
-Fly around Flint
Effect: none
Strategy
These insects will attack Flint when you try to move north past Riter's
injured body. They can inflict a decent amount of damage, so be sure
that Flint's HP is near max before fighting them. You can recover at a
hot spring if needed or with food items.
You should be able to defeat a Fire Fly in one turn with a 3 or 4 hit
combo. Otherwise, it will take two turns to defeat one. If you cannot
combo very well, use Flint's Brandish attack instead. Recover with a Nut
Bread (a round piece of bread) if Flint's HP drops below 30 or so.
-Flint: standard attack
Nut Bread, as needed
d)Mouse Fly
"Tobi Mausu"
(A mouse with wings)

This enemy will attack you inside Riter's house. If Flint's HP is low,
be sure to recover with a food item before the battle starts. You should
be able to defeat this enemy in about four or five turns.
-Flint: standard attack
WALKTHROUGH
After the introductory scene, Thomas will come running down to Flint's
house while blaring a siren. He will start banging on Flint's door, trying
to get him to come out and help.
"Flint, Flint, Fliiiint!!
It's a fire it's a fire, a fire a fire!
Terry Forest is burning!"
When you gain control of Flint, walk toward the door.
"If you don't hurry, it's going to get really bad Flint!!
The forest, the forest!
The forest is burniiiiing!
For crying out loud! Why does he lock his door in such a safe town like
this! Fliiint!"
[Thomas breaks off the doorknob]
"Oops! The doorknob...
Why does it come off at a time like this!"
[Flint comes out the door]
"Ah, the doorknob!
I mean, Flint!
This is no time to be dense!
There's a huge fire at Terry Forest!
Isn't it in times like this that a reckless 'nice guy' like you takes
action!
C'mon Flint. Please!
>Yes >No"
Whether you answer "yes" or "no," you will have to go to the forest with
Thomas.
Before going anywhere, examine Boney's dog house and Flint will obtain the
Normal Staff. Equip this weapon on Flint.
Next, check the northeast part of the area and you should find a gift box
with a Nut Bread inside it. This is a food item that recovers 30 HP when
used. Food items will be Flint's only means of recovery, so be sure to save
them.

Go north into the main town square. From here, there are three other
passages, but you can only go north for now. Before moving on, talk to a
man sitting on a bench wearing a hat and sunglasses. His name is Mapson,
and he will give you a map of the area. He will also express concern about
a man named "Riter" and his home in the forest. He will circle the location
of his house on your map (press the R button to view the map). Go through
the north exit.
This next area is called the "Crossroad." There are two gift boxes in this
area, both of which contain food items. The first one is located in the
southeast corner, and it contains an Edible Mushroom (recovers 20 HP). The
second one is located in the northwest corner, and it contains a Nut Bread.
You can also find a few Nuts on the ground. They recover 5 HP when directly
eaten, but can be turned into Nut Cookies (recover 15 HP) or Nut Bread a
little later in the game. You will also find a bell tower and a very tall
man ringing the bell in this area. The man's name is "Leder," and he will
not say a word to you if you talk to him. Go west to move on.
(1C2)
Before heading into the forest, you will be stopped by a man named "Yonel."
He will tell you to go into the shrine and pray before going into the
forest. Enter the shrine and examine the altar. A voice will ask you to
enter your name in Japanese. If you can't read Japanese, just enter any
letter and select the bottom-right option to end. Exit the shrine and go
into the forest.
The first person you see in the forest is Mike. Talk to Mike and he will
give you a Cookie (recovers 15 HP) for free. Talk to him three times and he
will give you a total of three Cookies. This food item is mostly useful for
recovering Flint's HP outside of battle.
A little bit further into the forest, you should see your first enemy, Mr.
Batty. This is a good enemy to practice the "Sound Battle" system against,
since its battle music has a nice, even rhythm that shouldn't be too hard
to figure out. He is also a pretty weak enemy and is easy to defeat. Stay
in this area and fight the Mr. Batties if you want more practice or if you
want to level up. There is a hot spring to the west you can go to if you
need to recover HP. There is also a gift box in this area that contains a
"Goat Ring." Be sure to equip this on Flint when obtained. Go north to move
on.
The forest is burning all over the place in this area, and you will take
damage if you walk over any flames. There are also Potato Monsters buried
in the ground, but because they are stationary it should be easy to
approach them from behind and get a surprise attack. You should be able to
defeat this enemy in about two rounds.
(1C3)
Make sure that Flint's HP is near max before moving north. Eat a few food
items or recover at the hot spring if needed. Keep going north and
eventually you will come across Riter lying on the ground. He was trying to
fend off a bunch of fire breathing flies, but their numbers were too great
and he became injured. His son, "Fel," is trapped in their home to the
north. Once the conversation is over, examine the large piece of lumber
next to Riter to obtain it. I recommend you equip it, even though it
slightly decreases Flint's Speed, and discard the Normal Staff.
Before you can move into the next area, Flint will be attacked by three
Fire Flies. You can defeat a Fire Fly in one turn with a 3 or 4 hit combo,
so try to be careful in your timing. Eat a Nut Bread if Flint's HP drops to
about 30 or below.
If Flint's HP is low after the battle with the Fire Flies, be sure to
recover with a food item. You will want to be near max HP for another
upcoming battle. When you reach Riter's house to the north, you will have
to dash into the door to enter. As you try to go upstairs, you will be
attacked by a flying mouse. This enemy can inflict a substantial amount of
damage, but you should be able to defeat this enemy without having to
recover if you did so before the battle started.
Once upstairs, you will have to dash through a chunk of wood in order to
get to Fel. Talk to him and then take him back to town.
You will find Riter lying on a bench next to the shrine. He will thank
Flint for rescuing his son. Once it starts raining, the group will go to
the Inn where they rest and recover.

"Dokukeshi"
(A small blue bottle)
Use: cures poison
Location: Isaac's house, near the hot spring
gift box
You can obtain as many of these as you want from a box in Isaac's house.
It may be a good idea to carry two or three of these before going into the
forest.
b)Peculiar Piece of Cheese
"Kuse no aru Chiizu"
(Looks like a round chunk of cheese)
Use: recovers 60 HP for Flint
Location: the eastern part of town
You can obtain this item as soon as you exit the Inn. The gift box is
located in the northeast corner.
c)Nut Bread
"Konomi Pan"
(A round piece of bread)
Use: recovers 30 HP
Location: the western part of town, next to the tent
in a cave up on the cliffs
You can obtain this item as soon as you exit the Inn. You can also obtain
another one after climbing the cliff in the forest and entering the cave
to the east. This item is best used for recovering HP outside of battle.
d)Edible Mushroom
"Taberareru Kinoko"

You can obtain this item as soon as you exit the Inn. This item is best
used for recovering HP outside of battle.
e)Nuts
"Nattsu"
(A small, oblong nut)
Use: recovers 5 HP; can also be turned into Nut Cookies or Nut Bread
Location: on the ground of the "Crossroads" or in the forest
A little bit later in the chapter, you will be able to give a few of these
items to a baker in town and have her turn them into Nut Cookies or Nut
Bread. The baker's house is on the western edge of the main town square,
and she can take 1 Nut and make a Nut Cookie or 3 Nuts and make Nut Bread.
f)Fried Potato
"Yaki Imo"
(A brown potato with yellow insides)
Use: recovers 40 HP
Obtained: the Fried Potato Monster often drops this item
Hold on to this item and use it when you need to recover.
g)Beef Jerky
"Hoshiniku"
(A light brown piece of meat)
Use: recovers 60 HP
Location: in the forest
in a cave on the cliffs
on the riverbank in the forest
Be sure to make room for this item in your inventory. It is the best food
item you can get at this point in the game. Don't get too stingy with it,
though, since you'll be able to find quite a bit of these later on. Use
this item when you need to recover in the middle of battle.
h)Mini-Mini Charm
"Mini Mini Omamori"
(A small red charm)
Use: armor for Flint; can be equipped on "body"
Obtained: gift box in forest
This item can be found in the area right before the fallen trees and the
cliffs. Be sure to obtain it and equip it on Flint.

Type: Organic
Vulnerable: Fire, crying
HP: 154
Attacks
-Standard attack
Damage: 10~15 HP
-Charge forward
Damage: 25~40 HP
-Make a scary face
Effect: decreases Offense by about 20%
-Let out a burst of steam
Effect: none
Strategy
You should be able to defeat this enemy in one or two rounds with decent
combos. This enemy is always stationary, so it should be easy to
approach it from behind. This enemy often drops a Fried Potato, a food
item that recovers 40 HP.
-Flint: standard attack
-Boney: standard attack

"Kamu Tokiwa Kamu Hebi"
Type: Organic

HP: 74
Attacks
-Biting Attack
Damage: 10~18 HP
-Bite with its poisonous fangs

Strategy
You should be able to defeat this enemy in one or two rounds. If you are
poisoned, use an Antidote after the battle to cure yourself. You can
obtain as many Antidotes as you want at Isaac's house near the hot
spring. This enemy wanders around aimlessly outside of battle, so try to
approach it from behind.
-Flint: standard attack
-Boney: standard attack

Vulnerable: Fire, crying
HP: 103
Attacks

-Boney: standard attack
d)Reconstructed Caribou
"Kaizou Karibuu"
(Half caribou, half machine)
Type: Mechanical Chimera
Vulnerable: Thunder, paralysis

HP: ~370
Attacks
-Antler attack
Damage: 20~30 HP
-Thrash around
Damage: 30~50 HP to entire party
-Let out a burst of steam
Effect: none
Strategy
Have Duster use his special "Wall Staple" technique in the first round
(select the third icon from the left to use special techniques); you
should see the Caribou briefly turn blue, and it will be immobilized and
unable to attack for the next few rounds. The Caribou will likely
recover in about two or three rounds, so have Duster use the technique
again when the Caribou attacks. There is some chance that the technique
won't work, so have Duster use it again if it fails. Unless you get
unlucky, the Caribou should only attack once or twice during the battle.
Use standard attacks for offense, and you should be able to win in about
five or six rounds. If you need to recover, use Beef Jerky or Nut Bread.
-Flint: standard attack
-Duster: Wall Staple
standard attack, while the Caribou is immobilized
-Boney: standard attack
Beef Jerky or Nut Bread, as needed
WALKTHROUGH
When you exit the Inn, Isaac will approach Flint and ask him if he has seen
Hinawa and his kids. He will then explain that he saw Hinawa while he was in
the woods and is afraid something happened to them:
"I was in the mountains picking mushrooms when I saw Hinawa. A little
later, I was resting next to the riverbank when I heard this loud howl
from far away...it sounded like a Drago's howl. Then I thought...I
heard...a scream.
...Flint. Hinawa is back home, right?"
Go back to Flint's house and you will see a pigeon sleeping in front of the
door. It's the same pigeon that Hinawa gave her letter to. Approach it and
Flint will read the letter (in which Hinawa says that she and the kids will
be back home by the end of the day).
Isaac and Fel come to check on Flint and find that Hinawa is not home yet.
They are worried that they are stuck in the rain and go off to form a search
party.
When you exit the house, Boney will ask to go with you. If you do not take
him with you, you will not be able to progress later in the game, so say
"yes." Boney will be your second party member. He has high Speed and decent
offensive power, though he has low HP and requires a bit more care than
Flint to keep alive. I recommend you give him some of your food items, as
his high Speed makes him a good healer in battle.
Go north and back toward the forest. On the way, you will meet Yonel, who
has formed different groups and sent them into the forest to search for
Hinawa and the kids.
Before going further into the forest, go into Isaac's house (it's located
near the hot spring). Check the box sitting on the table and you will obtain
an Antidote, an item that cures poison (it looks like a small blue bottle).
You should take about two or three of these (check the box multiple times).
The forest is now filled with stronger enemies. You may want to spend some
time leveling up Boney a level or two, since there is a boss battle coming
up pretty soon. If Flint or Boney is either poisoned by the snake or brought
down to 0 HP, you can go to the hot spring to completely recover.
(1C4)
To get to your destination, head towards Riter's house but take a detour to
the left on the way. This passage was previously blocked by a large flame,
but it is now extinguished and you can pass (it is the path you saw the
mysterious pig masked soldier run through during the fire). In this new
area, you can walk south to reach a gift box containing an Antidote; if you
don't need an Antidote and just want to move ahead, go north. On the way,
you'll come across two gift boxes. One contains Beef Jerky, a food item that
recovers 60 HP. Save this item for the upcoming boss battle. The other gift
box contains a Mini-Mini Charm, a piece of armor that should be equipped on
Flint. Move north into the next area.
(1C5)
Go directly north and talk to Bronson, the man wearing suspenders and
standing in front of the fallen trees. Since the trees are completely
blocking the way forward, the group decides to find another path. Isaac,
Riter, and Fel will then come to help. Riter (being the macho guy that he
is) has recovered from his injuries and begins working on getting the trees
out of the way.
(1C6)
Once the conversation is over, walk to the west and toward the cliffs. Talk
to Yonel, the man wearing the hat. He recognizes the scratches and
footprints on the cliffs as that of a Drago, but wonders what could've
driven the normally tame Drago to cause such damage. Walk back down south a
little bit and Boney will spot something; higher up on the cliff is a red
piece of clothing stuck on a tree. At this point, the old man Wes will join
the group. Talk to him, and he will realize that Flint wants to climb the
cliff to examine the cloth. He believes his son could help out and tells
Boney to go get him from his home. You will then be prompted to give Wes's
son a name; his default name is "Duster." Wes will let Boney smell one of
Duster's stinky socks and sends him off.
After some doing, Boney will get Duster to come to the cliffs. Wes will
tell him what to do:
Wes:
"Duster...
It's finally time to put the thieving skills you've been practicing since
you were a child to use. Now, let me see you successfully apply your wall
climbing technique."
Duster:
"I've had a lot of practice, but this is the first time I try it for
real...I hope it goes well..."
Duster will look for a suitable place on the cliff (indicated by a dark,
vertical band) and he will start building a ladder to the top. Climb the
ladder and talk to him. He tells Flint that he has a slightly bad leg, but
he wants to go with you. He will then join your party.
Walk toward the torn piece of clothing and examine it. You can also enter
the cave and obtain a Nut Bread and Beef Jerky. There are a few mole enemies
in the cave, but you should be able to defeat them with little trouble.
Before moving on, be sure to save and recover your party members with any
Nut Bread or Cookies you may have. Walk north and you will soon spot a few
masked men doing something suspicious. Before long, you will be engaged in
battle with the Reconstructed Caribou.
Have Duster use his special "Wall Staple" technique in the first round; the
Caribou should briefly turn blue to indicate a successful attack, and the
Caribou will be immobilized for a few rounds (select the third icon from the
left to use special techniques). There is a chance that the technique might
fail, so use it again if it does. Use the technique whenever the Caribou
recovers to pin it down. Use standard attacks and you should win in about
five or six rounds.
After the battle, you can pick up the notes the masked men left behind and
read what it says:
"None of the animals in this area will do.
We have to make them cooler.
The themes are:
-stronger!
-badder!
-and more violent!
Take this and that and put them together to make something completely
new. If we were to name it, it will be called the Charming Chimera Plan.
We'll work hard at reconstruction."
Move north into the next area, watch the flying ship take off, and go back
to where the fallen trees were.
Yonel will inform you that Lucas and Claus were both found and offers to
watch over Boney while Flint goes to see them. Go through the passage that
was previously blocked by the fallen tress and you will come across a
campsite where the kids are resting. There is a gift box in the northeast
that contains Beef Jerky, so you might as well take it before doing anything
else.
Talk to the people surrounding the kids, and they will move out of the way.
Lucas and Claus will both embrace their father, and the screen will fade
away.
When you regain control of Flint, talk to both of the kids. They are still
in a state of shock from the ordeal and mention something about their
mother. Try to move further north and Bronson will come running to the
campsite with some important news. Talk to him, and he will tell you what he
found.
"Flint...
How can I say this...
Anyway, calm down and listen to me.
I have good news and bad news. Which do you want to hear...
No, wait...
Let me tell you the good news first.
I found a very large Drago's Fang.
This will make a great weapon.
I thought you should use it.
...
The bad news is...
...
The bad news is...
...
...where the Drago's Fang was found.
It was...
In your...
It was stabbed in your wife's heart..."
Flint will then suffer a complete breakdown.
"Flint...
Get a hold of yourself...
I'm sure Claus and Lucas are safe because Hinawa saved them with her
life."
Riter will finally knock Flint to the ground, and the scene will end.

Comments: The Mecha-Drago will use this attack when it runs out of HP. If
you end the battle quickly enough, Flint should only suffer
about 30 HP of damage. Be sure to keep Flint's HP above 35 or
so at all times in order to survive this attack.
Strategy
Use the Drago's Fang in the first round to penetrate the Drago's defense.
The Drago's Fang looks like a white fang attached to a hilt (push select
while in the inventory screen to see what the items look like).
Before using your standard attacks, use up any offensive items you may
have (Hashiridamas, Ikazuchidamas, and Bashiridamas). They all look like
little balls and bombs, and should inflict about 70~120 HP of damage.
Use your standard attacks thereafter and try to get as high a combo as
you can. With a 16 hit combo, you can inflict about 70 HP of damage, and
you should be able to end the battle relatively quickly if you have good
timing. Use Flint's Charge Up move to increase your Offense by about 20%
if you want to inflict more damage.
The Mecha-Drago will mostly attack with its weak biting and stomping
attacks, but its fire breathing attack can cause major damage if you are
not prepared for it. Be sure to keep Flint's HP above 80 or so with food
items and you should have no problem surviving this battle. You probably
have quite a few Beef Jerky in your inventory, so don't be afraid to make
good use of them.

WALKTHROUGH
You will find Flint locked up in the town prison with Bronson watching over
him.
"We've never put anyone in Tatsumairi's prison until today. You're our
commemorative first prisoner."
He informs Flint that Ollie and Abbot have both recovered from Flint's
beating. He offers his condolences and tells Flint to get some rest.
Go up to the desk and examine it ("It looks like it hasn't been used in a
while"). Next check the prison door twice. Claus will then come in and give
Flint an apple.
"Dad, I'm going to leave this apple here, okay.
The core is hard and it might be hard to eat but...
The core is...
The core is hard and it might be hard to eat, but you have to eat it,
okay!
I'm going to get stronger.
...so strong that I can easily beat a Drago!
Dad...
I..."
Examine the apple and answer "yes" when prompted. Flint will bite into the
apple and find a file inside it. Examine the door again and this time Flint
will break the lock with the file.
Exit the prison and you will find Duster waiting for Flint. He offers his
sympathies and tells Flint that Lucas has been at Hinawa's grave all day,
crying his little heart out.
(1C7)
Go into the town square and you will find Mapson next to where you enter.
Talk to him and he will circle the location of the graveyard on your map.
The baker's house is also right next to where Mapson is standing. Go inside
and talk to the woman standing by the counter. If you have 1 Nut, she will
make you a Cookie (recovers 15 HP); if you have 3 Nuts, she will make you
Nut Bread (recovers 30 HP).
Go north into the next area (the "Crossroad") and go north again into the
graveyard. Hinawa's grave is at the northeast corner. You will find much of
the townsfolk gathered around her grave. The area is decorated with
sunflowers, Hinawa's favorite kind of flower.
Alec has come all the way down to town to pay his respects. Talk to him, and
he will ask Flint if Claus didn't come with him; Claus left saying he wanted
to go meet Flint but apparently hasn't come back after that. He asks Lucas
if he knows where Claus went. Lucas denies knowing anything at first, but
eventually lets slip that Claus ran off into the mountains with Flint's
knife to go and kill the Drago that attacked their mother. Alec scolds Lucas
for letting Claus go, and Lucas runs off.
Alec believes the Drago that killed Hinawa is no ordinary Drago and knows
that Claus has no chance against such a beast. He tells Flint to get himself
properly equipped and come to Alec's house in the mountains once he is
ready.
Go back to the town square and go into Thomas's Bazaar (it's right next to
the Inn). On the counter, you will find a Flea Charm, an Explosion Ball, and
an Edible Mushroom. Everything on the counter is free, and all you have to
do is go up to an item and examine it to take it with you. The Edible
Mushroom you can leave behind, but be sure to pick up the Flea Charm and the
Explosion Ball. The Explosion Ball is an item that can inflict about 100 HP
of damage to all enemies on screen. Use it when you are in a dangerous
situation or when you are in a boss battle. The Flea Charm is a defensive
item that can be equipped on Flint's Body. Equip it and discard the Mini-
Mini Charm if it was equipped before. If Flint's inventory is full, discard
any weak food items you may have.
Next, go to the house on the left of the bazaar. This is Bronson's house,
and he will give you the Drago's Fang he found in Hinawa's chest. This item
is necessary for fighting Dragos, and you will need it soon. If Flint's
inventory is full, discard any weak food items you may have.
You may also want to go to Wes's house on the eastern edge of town. If you
talk to him, he will give you a Thunder Ball, an item that inflicts about
90 HP of damage to all enemies on screen.
(1C8)
Your destination is Alec's house, located way up north on the mountains. If
you don't know where it is, you can talk to Mapson in the town square and he
will circle its location on your map.
To get to his house you will have to go to the riverbank in the forest again
and move further north from there. There are a few new enemies in the
forest, most of which should pose no problem for you. There are a couple
enemies, however, that are quite unique and are worth noting. The first
enemy is called the "Susudango," which is basically a ball of dust or soot.
It can occasionally be found outside of Riter's collapsed house, and you
have to walk up to it or else it will disappear. It has very low Offense but
very high Defense, and you will probably only inflict 1 HP of damage to it.
In order to defeat it, you will need to attack with high combos and inflict
36 HP of damage. If you successfully defeat this enemy before it runs away,
you will be rewarded with 1000 experience points.
The second unique enemy appears in the area just before the riverbank. It is
basically a walking bush, and you will actually have to examine it in order
to engage it. This enemy will never attack (except for maybe solidifying
Flint) and will actually use Lifeup[alpha] to recover your HP. You only get
8 exp. points for defeating it, though, and it will walk away after a few
turns. Use this "enemy" for recovery if you need it and save your food items
for later.
When you reach the area north of the riverbank, you should find a gift box
that contains a Sea Turtle Ring. Equip this item on Flint and discard the
Goat Ring if it was previously equipped. There are also Rock Lizards lurking
in this area. These creatures have pretty high Defense, so be sure to attack
with good combos.
Once you cross the bridge, head toward the right exit; you will not be able
to pass through the left exit for awhile, so forget about it for now.
Enter Alec's house and talk to him.
"Oh, you're here.
It's gotten really difficult to get through the forest, hasn't it...
What's with those hard to describe flying mice with insect-like wings on
its back. I think I got bitten somewhere by those things. It's gotten
better but...
No, no, no!
Forget about that!
I've managed to find Claus's whereabouts!
According to the frogs, he seems to be around my friend's place. Let's
get going!"
Once Alec joins Flint, exit the house and head back toward the riverbank in
the forest. On the way, Alec will explain a few things.
"...Flint.
I bet you were wondering what I meant when I mentioned the frogs earlier.
The frogs are my friend's errand runners. My friend can freely
communicate with frogs and lizards and whatnot.
See look, there's a lizard right there! All we have to do is follow the
direction the lizards point us in."
You will then see a red lizard in front of the house. If you talk to it, it
will spin around and point you in the right direction to go. There are
several lizards on the way south, and they will eventually point you back to
the riverbank in the forest. Alec continues his explanations:
"...Flint.
I bet you want to know what kind of person my friend is. My friend, no,
my friends have lived in isolation from long ago. They are called
'Magypsies.'"
"...Flint.
It looks like you're concerned about the word 'Magypsy.' The Magypsies
have lived for a long time protecting something in this world and possess
strange powers.
They are neither human nor monster, man nor woman.
I don't even know how old they are.
I guess my explanation doesn't really help much.
Anyway, they're weird.
Everything about them is weird.
All of them are weird.
That's what they're like.
But they are kind-hearted."
When you get back to the forest, approach the river and examine the frog
on the right. A line of frogs will form in the river and you will be able to
jump across.
In the next area, you will find a cow and a hot spring. If you talk to the
cow, it will give you some Fresh Milk, a food item that recovers 80 HP. It
will turn into Spoiled Milk in about a minute and it will only recover 10 HP
when it goes bad. If you wait another 10 or 15 minutes, however, it will
turn into Yogurt and you will be able to recover 80 HP with it again.
(1C9)
There should be a lake in the area with a house standing in the middle of
it. Walk across the rock path and enter the house.
There are six Magypsies inside: Furigia on the bed, Mikusolidia on the left
of the table, and Doria on the right. Eoria is sitting on the chair in the
middle, with Lidia on the left and Ionia on the right (I apologize for the
difficult names; I don't know how to translate them without making them
sound weird). They look like cross dressers and talk like stereotypical gay
men, but they are not actually humans.
Talk to Ionia; he knows Alec and will introduce everyone. He will also
mention the seventh Magypsy, Locklear, who is not at the party. Alec will
ask them about Claus and whether they have seen him. Claus apparently did
come here, saying he wanted to defeat his mother's killer, and Eoria taught
him how to use PSI. Claus then left for the Drago's territory in the
mountains. Alec will then get mad at the Magypsies for not stopping Claus,
but there is nothing that can be done except to go after him.
(1C10)
Exit the Magypsy's house and enter the cave to the north. The cave is dark
inside, but you can see your surroundings if you look very closely. Alec
(along with myself) will give you directions to the exit.
Walk north and then turn left. At the first junction, Alec will tell you to
go west. If you turn north, you will find a gift box that contains a
Peculiar Piece of Cheese (recovers 60 HP for Flint). It is guarded by three
Mr. Batties, but you should be able to take them out easily with Flint's
Brandish attack.
Keep walking west and Alec will tell you to go north at the next junction.
If you go west, you will run into a Rock Lizard and a dead end.
When Alec talks to you again, there should be a hole nearby. Fall into the
hole to go through a shortcut.
At the bottom of the hole, there is a gift box containing Beef Jerky
(recovers 60 HP) to the east. It is guarded by a Rock Lizard, but you should
be able to defeat it easily if you can attack with good combos.
Walk south and then east and you will come across another junction. Go
south. If you go west, you will walk a long way and eventually return to the
hole you previously fell through.
At the next junction, you can find a gift box containing an Explosion Ball
(inflicts about 100 HP of damage to all enemies) to the right. It is
unguarded and I recommend you obtain it. Go west to move on.
Alec will then stop you and you will hear a strange sound.
"Was that you?
It was me, it was me, heeheehee."
At the next junction, Alec will stop you again. Unfortunately, he forgot
which way to go and is not sure whether to go north or west. Go west to move
on. If you go north, you will hit a dead end and there is nothing there.
After climbing the vine, there is another junction. Go north.
Go north and then west and you should come across a vine. Climb it and then
go northwest to reach another vine. At the top of this vine, walk west to
reach one final vine and the exit.
(1C11)
Once you're out of the cave, head north into another cave. Climb the ladder
to reach a gift box containing Beef Jerky and an Amazing Capsule (Instant
Revitalizing Machine in EarthBound). Examine the machine to recover all your
HP. Exit the cave to the southeast.
Walk east and cross the bridge to reach a gift box containing a Blast Ball.
This item can inflict up to 150 HP of damage to all enemies on screen, but I
recommend you save it for an upcoming boss battle.
Walk north along the western edge of the riverbank and you should come
across another gift box containing a New Stave. Obtain this weapon, equip it
on Flint, and discard your previous weapon. The other two gift boxes in this
area contain Beef Jerky; obtain them if you need more food items. Go north
to move on.
When you reach the next area, you will spot a baby Drago playing with one of
Claus's shoes. Keep moving forward and you will come across a broken
platform that resembles the one back in the forest where you fought the
Reconstructed Caribou.
Be careful of the trees up here, as they can move and will attack. There are
two gift boxes that contain a Nut Bread and Beef Jerky. Obtain them if you
need food items.
When you reach the second gift box, be sure to recover Flint's HP to near
max. Move north and you will spot another one of Claus's shoes. Before long,
you will be engaged in battle with a Mecha-Drago.
Use the Drago's Fang in the first round to penetrate the Drago's hard skin.
The Drago's Fang looks like a white fang attached to a hilt (push select
while in the inventory screen to see what the items look like).
Before using your standard attacks, use up any offensive items you may have
(Hashiridamas, Ikazuchidamas, and Bashiridamas). They all look like little
balls and bombs, and should inflict about 70~120 HP of damage.
Use your standard attacks thereafter and try to get as high a combo as you
can. With a 16 hit combo, you can inflict about 70 HP of damage, and you
should be able to end the battle relatively quickly if you have good timing.
Use Flint's Charge Up move to increase your Offense by about 20% if you want
to inflict more damage. Recover Flint's HP with a food item if he falls
below 80 HP or so. Never allow Flint's HP to go below 30~35, or else you
will most likely lose the battle at the very end. The Drago will attempt one
final attack when it reaches 0 HP, and Flint will suffer about 280 HP of
damage.
Watch the scene after the battle is over and you will see the chapter
summary.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The people of Tatsumairi village may never have experienced sadness until
today. Whether it was sunny or cloudy, everyone greeted each other with a warm
smile. The animals in the forest were peaceful and all got along.
But now it seemed the people of Tatsumairi were experiencing all the sadness
in the world. The animals have started attacking people, and Flint's family
has fallen apart. Why is this happening? Who are those masked pig men and
what are those flying machines in the air?
And what about Claus...?
