Fire Emblem Character Comparison Guide Version FINAL
Covers: Fire Emblem: Fuuin no Tsurugi (FE6), Fire Emblem: Rekka no Ken (FE7, US)
and Fire Emblem: Seima no Kouseki (FE8, Fire Emblem: Sacred Stones)

================================================================================

You probably need a screen resolution of 800x600 or higher to see the new format
correctly (not to mention the intro title above). If not, have fun I guess.

This guide does contain spoilers for the three games. My bad. It also contains
opinions. Yeah, I'm full of slip ups.

Oh, one more thing, Version FINAL can ONLY be hosted at Gamefaqs or one
of it's affiliates. If you are neither, you must host Version 1.00 or lower.

I say this a bunch of times later, but I might as well say it here too, can't
hurt: I AM NO LONGER ACCEPTING SCORES AND OPINIONS! Go to Contact Info for
more, uh, info.

I. VERSIONS
------------------------------------------------------------
0.01 (2/10/04) - Got the basic structure of guide down.
0.9 (3/29/04) - Completed basic guide for submission.
0.91 (4/18/04) - Made some translation adjustments for promotion items,
and added first reader scores. Added one question to FAQ.
0.92 (4/25/04) - Correct Karel/Harken recruitment info. Added more
reader scores. Edited Contact Info.
0.94 (5/25/04) - Relatively took a while this time. Added scores.
Added a notice just before the character scores.
0.95 (7/3/04) - Added more scores, a recruitment fix on Harken, changed
Dayan's score due to a mistake on my part, and I've also added the
section "What to expect on the next update".
1.00 (4/14/05) - I apologize a ton for taking this long to update. Even
then, I only received 9 e-mails concerning my updating this guide, most
of the e-mails were just game help or 'were you got sword seals rom, tell
me plz'. Added Merlinus section.
2.00 (7/16/05) - I worked on this update for five straight days. It's a
complete overhaul, so much so that this guide is nearly 3x bigger than it
once was. Holy cows. See below.
2.01 (8/1/05) - Added the first of the scores for FE: The Sacred Stones,
and fixed many (though definately not all) of the errors.
2.02 (11/12/05) - More scores and fixes.
FINAL (2/11/06) - Last updates and fixes. Thanks to everybody who
contributed to this guide. This guide couldn't be as successful without
your e-mails and contributions.

---------------------
Version 2.00 Updates
---------------------
1) I've added Sacred Stones characters, all 43 of them (that includes the
10 secret characters). I had some difficulty placing some of them (do I
place Amelia with the Cavaliers or with the Armors? Eventually, I just put
them in a new 'Trainees' section), but they're there. It brings the
character total up to 139.
2) I've also completely changed the character format. You'll see what I
mean. Second opinions are now in their own section, as are the Best/Worst
characters.
3) I've also added Stat Growths for each character (FE8 characters win
that by default), and each character's Average ?/20, 20/20, or 10/20/20
stats. They are now both in separate sections.
4) I've changed some characters scores. You whiny ones will know
which scores have changed. You'll notice that my reviews for most of
the characters are rather short. Well, most of you hate my opinions anyway,
so think of it as a blessing. Until I flesh them out next update.
5) Oh yeah, more reader scores.

II. INTRODUCTIONS
------------------------------------------------------------
Hi. My name is Rick Dykes (known online as Rick52), and this is my first
guide.

The Fire Emblem series has been around for 15 years now, and 9 games have been
released in the series' fine history. This guide covers the characters from
the three Game Boy Advance Games: Fire Emblem: Fuuin no Tsurugi (hereby referred
to as 'FE6'), Fire Emblem: Rekka no Ken (the 1st US game, hereby referred to
as 'FE7'), and Fire Emblem: Seima no Kouseki (the 2nd US game aka Sacred Stones,
hereby referred to as 'FE8').

Fire Emblem: Rekka no Ken and Fire Emblem: Fuuin no Tsurugi are extremely
similar games. They feature the same classes, the same continent and places,
the same weaponry. It's basically one big game split into two games covering
each generation.

Fire Emblem: Seima no Kouseki is another story. It may not of been a good idea
to include them in this game because the class structure is so different. You
might take your Fighter (still in section G), and turn him into a Hero (still
in section F). But, here they are due to popular request.

I do this because I see and hear people talk about who's the better character
in this class or that class; or person 1 thinks 'Character A' is a much better
'Class' than 'Character B' while person 2 thinks otherwise, which spans all 3
games. I'd thought I'd add in my opinion on who's good and who's not, etc.

Of note, I've received an e-mail or two calling out my ignorance in using the
'US' when referring to FE7 at times, since FE7/8 are both now available in
European and Austrailian markets. I actually started the guide before FE7's
European release, plus, and I'll be making enemies with this, but if FE7 hadn't
become successful in America, I don't think it would've been in Europe or
Australia (and FE8/9 might not of been anywhere other than Japan).

------------------------------------------------------------
III. HOW DOES THIS GUIDE WORK?
------------------------------------------------------------
The 139 Playable characters that span the 3 games (NOT including the Trial
Map-only characters in FE6) are divided into subcategories by class. I use
this new format:

------------------------------------------------------------------------------
| Z9. Character | Class | Weapon: Whatever they use | FE? |
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Appearance: Whatever their face portrait looks like
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
| Promotion: What they promote to | With: What item you need to promote |
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Bio: A quick summary of this character's past or present.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
| Rating: ??/10 | Fan Rating: An average score provided by readers |
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
My opinions on this character goes in this third-to-last row.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The chapter you can acquire this character appears in this row.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
How to recruit this character appears in this final row.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I then follow up with each characters Stat Growths (the % chance a stat will
go up per level up), Average Lv 20 promoted stats, and then a factual and
opinioned view of who's the best and worst.

------------------------------------------------------------
IV. THE CHARACTER COMPARISON
------------------------------------------------------------
Since this section is pretty darn large, I've put a tidy little feature in.
Press CTRL+F to bring up the 'Find' feature, and type in the four letters next
to the class you want to go to so you can go directly to that section (for
example, typing M.Y.S.M without the periods takes you to the myrmidon section).

For those pesky new Sacred Stones classes, I've tacked them onto existing
sections. Characters from FE8 have been placed according to their starting
class. For the trainee units, they have their own section. Also, for
unpromted characters in FE8, the * indicating weapons after promotion
will not apply to all classes (eg Neimi won't be able to use swords if
you make her a Sniper).

NOTICE: The following scores (well, my scores, anyway), are based on a
character's usefulness on NORMAL difficulty, not Hard Mode. If that
were the case, Zealot would've gotten a -2...

----------------------------------------
A. The Lords - Unpromoted (LRDU)
----------------------------------------
-The Lords are the main characters in Fire Emblem. Usually, they take thrones
or gates to complete Chapters. If they die, it's Game Over. So, they're
pretty important. Between the three games, there are 6 Lords.
-Since the Lords can become much different characters when
they promote, I'll put those into two different sections.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------
| A1. Eliwood | Lord | Weapon: Sword/Rapier | FE7 |
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Appearance: Red Hair, Blue Armor, does NOT look like SSBM Roy
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
| Promotion: Knight Lord | Via: After Ch. 26 (E)/Heaven Seal (H) |
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Bio: Lord of Pherae, son of Marquess Pherae Elbert. After Elbert and his
travelling army disappers, Eliwood sets off to find clues about his father's
wherabouts.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Decent enough, especially for a main character, but you'll need to be a bit
fortunate to get his strength up (one game, my Eliwood has 7 Str at Lv 20.)
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
| Eliwood Route Acquire: Chapter 11 | Hector Route Acquire: Chapter 12 |
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
He'll be the starting character in Eliwood Chapter 11 or in Hector Ch. 12.

| A2. Lyn | Lord | Weapon: Sword/Mani Katti/Wo Dao | FE7 |

| Promotion: Blade Lord | With: Heaven's Seal |
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Bio: Granddaughter of Marquess Caelin. Grew up in Sacae with her Sacaen

The Lord version of the myrmidon, basically. Good skill and speed, but Str
is low, as is defense. Don't put her in the front line because of it.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
| Eliwood Route Acquire: Chapter 15 | Hector Route Acquire: Chapter 16 |
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
She's the starting prologue character. She rejoins at the beginning of the
above chapters.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------
| Promotion: Great Lord | With: Heaven Seal (E)/ Beat Ch. 28 (H)|
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Bio: Younger brother of Lord Uther, who is currently in charge of affairs in
Ostia. Good childhood friend of Eliwood's.

| Rating: 9/10 | Fan Rating: 9.16/10 - 31 Votes - 14 tens |
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
His great defense and his Wolf Beil can get you out of a sticky situation
(like in Chapter 16x). Sometimes his speed will take a hit, though.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
| Eliwood Route Acquire: Chapter 12 | Hector Route Acquire: Chapter 11 |
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
In Eliwood's route, he'll appear with Oswin at around turn 3. He's the
starting character in Hector's route (duh).
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
********************************************************************************
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
| A4. Roy | Lord | Weapon: Sword, Rapier | FE6 |

Appearance: Red Hair, Blue Armor, IS the same Roy from SSBM
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
| Promotion: Master Lord | With: Beat Chapter 21 (or 21 Gaiden) |
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Bio: Son of Marquess Pherae (Eliwood is the Marquess at this time).
Upstanding young chap with a strong sense of justice. He makes an appearance
in Super Smash Brothers Melee as basically an advertisement; FE6 wasn't
released in Japan until a few months AFTER the japanese SSBM release.

| Rating: 5/10 | Fan Rating: 5.87/10 - 13 Votes |
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
He's the definition of average before promotion. You can have him help give
damage to someone or whatnot, but he really can't own enemies like other
units can. You'd best arena him to Lv 20 and not worry about him.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Acquire: Chapter 1

------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Bio: The princess of Renais. As her castle was nearing Grado takeover, she
was swept out by her guard Seth. Knowing that her brother Ephraim fights on

------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Bio: The prince of Renais, destined to be king. Using guerrilla-like
tactics, he and his army drives deep into Grado territory to try to end the
war.

Slightly better than Eirika unpromoted. His Reginleif, like the Rapier, is
excellent in dispatching Armors and Mountees (though it's no Wolf Beil).
Overall, he's an excellent unit.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
| Eirika Route Acquire: Ch. 15 | Ephraim Route Acquire: Chapter 8 |
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Technically, Ephraim first can be used in Chapter 5x, but then disappears
until partway into Chapter 8. If you decide to go Eirika's route, he'll
leave your party up until Chapter 15.

B. The Lords - Promoted (LRDP)

The promoted forms of each of the six Lords. Many fields will be missing here
because they've been already filled in section A for these guys and gals.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------
| B1. Eliwood | Knight Lord | Weapon: Sword/Rapier/*Lance | FE7 |
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
| Rating: 7/10 | Fan Rating: 7.15/10 - 27 Votes - 1 ten |
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Eliwood gets the job done, and adding spears is nice, but compared to what
happens to the other three in promotion, Eliwood is a mere afterthough. He
can also use Durandal, but it's so heavy it's a non-factor.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
********************************************************************************
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
| B2. Lyn | Blade Lord |Weapon:Sword/ManiKatti/WoDao/*Bow| FE7 |
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
| Rating: 9/10 | Fan Rating: 9.25/10 - 28 Votes - 7 tens |
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Wow. The addition of bows alone makes her awesome. You'd be surprise how
often she criticals with it, despite the nubmers. Her power still isn't that
great, though, and defense isn't too hot either. She can use the Sol Katti
upon promotion, though it's just a stronger Mani Katti.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
********************************************************************************
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
| B3. Hector | Great Lord | Weapon: Axe/Wolf Beil/*Sword | FE7 |
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
| Rating: 10/10 | Fan Rating: 9.75/10 - 32 Votes - 24 tens |
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
We all agree, promoted Hector is unstoppable. High HP, high Str, high Def,
his only real weakness is his Speed, but its really hard for anyone to take
advantage of that. He can use Armads, but he really doesn't need to.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
********************************************************************************
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
| B4. Roy | Master Lord | Weapon: Sword/Rapier | FE6 |
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
| Rating: 9/10 | Fan Rating: 8.20/10 - 10 Votes |
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
He's not much better promoted unless you let him tear loose with the Sword
of Seals, quite possibly the best weapon in all three games combined. He is

In the many times I've been able to get Eirika to 20/20, she's failed to max

Before I continue, why'd NOA choose 'Great Lord' as his and Eirika's class?
The Japanese 'Master Lord' or even Eliwood's 'Knight Lord' makes more sense.
Don't give them the class that Hector once used, as Hector's Great Lord is
quite different than the Renais twins Great Lord. But, I digress. Ephraim,
like his sister, will be busy maxing his stats out, except for Luck and Res.
Since those two stats aren't as important as Str, that's a plus for Ephraim.
But, his Speed cap is 24 for some reason, so his greatness is limited.

C. Knight-General (KNGN)
----------------------------------------
-The Knight/General is the 'Tank' class of Fire Emblem games. Though usually
slow in both speed in movement, these units have high defense and strength and
can take out armies at a time, given they can actually reach those armies
before someone else wipes them out. The Knights in Fire Emblem: Sword of Seals
can Triangle Attack, a combination attack that never misses and deals three
times the damage (nine times if you critical).
-NOTE: In the japanese games, 'Knight' is referred to as 'Armor Knight', since
Knights in older Fire Emblem games refer to characters that were dismounted
from their horses/pegasi/dragons. I'll call them Armor Knights here.
-NOTE2: For the FE6 characters, I'll be using the class names used in that game.
For example, here I'll be using 'Armor Knight' for the FE6 guys instead of
'Knight'. I'm crazy that way.

A * indicates a weapon that character can only use AFTER promotion (if that

D. Cavalier-Paladin/Great Knight (CVPL)
----------------------------------------
-Another Fire Emblem mainstay. The mounted cavalier is often fast (movement
wise, obviously), but the majority of them only specialize in maxing out one
or two stats. It's usually a good idea to have one or two around, but don't
bring out the whole lot of them. In total, there are 18 Cavaliers/Paladins/
Great Knights, though two of those are Marcus.
-Note: In the Japanese game, 'Cavalier' is called 'Social Knight'. It's been
like that since the original Fire Emblem for the NES. Why it's called that is
beyond me.
-Note2: The Paladins in FE6/7 can use Swords, Lances, and Axes. In FE8, Axes
are removed from the Paladin's arsenal, in an attempt to give people a reason
to have units go to Great Knight instead (as GK's have all three).

As the Green Cavalier, he excels in Speed, as it should be. As solid as
Alan, and the two of them make an excellent support pair. My last

E. Myrmidon/Swordmaster (MYSM)
----------------------------------------
-Typically, the myrmidon hails from Sacae. Though their blows lack strength,
they are quick and deal critical damage. Swordmasters in USFE gain a 15% crit
bonus, but those in FE:SoS gain a 30% bonus. They do lack in defense and HP,
relying more on dodging attacks than taking them, so be careful when using
them. Also, they gain no extra weapons when promoted, instead getting said
critical bonus. There are 9 characters in this class, 2 of which are Karel.
-Note: In the Japanese Version of Fire Emblem (the Eliwood one), Myrmidon is
called 'Swordfighter'. Yet, Sword of Seals refers to it as 'Myrmidon' like
normal.

Of the three you get in FE7, Guy is the best you can get. He'll probably max

H. Brigand/Pirate-Berserker (BPBR)
----------------------------------------
-Enemy brigands/pirates have the potential to loot villages. Your
brigands/pirates can't, but they still have the terrain abilities. Brigands
can slowly but surely traverse through mountainside, while Pirates can walk
over all water (rivers and bigger). Berserkers can walk on both terrain
types. Plus, similar to that of a Swordmaster, Berserkers don't gain any new
weapons to wield, instead they get a critical bonus (15% for FE7/8, 30%
for FE6). There are a total of 6 units of these types.
-Note: In the Japanese version of Fire Emblem US, Brigands were called
'Mountaintheifs', Pirates were called 'Marinetheifs', and those odd Corsair
classes were called 'Laketheifs'. Also, in Sword of Seals, Brigands were
referred to as 'Bandits'.
-Note 2: In Sword of Seals, Brigands and Pirates promote via the standard
Heroes Crest. In FE7 & FE8, Pirates (or, more specifically, Dart),
has to use the new Ocean Seal. Additionally, Pirates (read: Dart)
cannot use the Earth Seal. Ross would have to use one too if you made him
a Pirate.
