0 Introduction
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
===============================================================================
The aim of this guide is to provide the reader with detailed information and an
in-depth, easy-to-follow walkthrough of Pokémon Emerald.
I will try and be as spoiler-free as possible, but I will probably advise you
when to catch certain pokémon when there's a gym up ahead or something.
I have designed this guide so you can use the Ctrl + F function to find things
easier (hold down the Ctrl key and press F). To use it, type in the box the
code that appears next to every page's title.
(E.G. For [001] you type '[001]'.)
NOTE: Parts of this guide are likely to change in different versions, and
things are likely to be added to the contents.
===============================================================================
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
1 : Read Before Playing : [0010]
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
===============================================================================
- Controls [001A0]
You're likely to know the controls already, and they're pretty easy to figure
out. But for those who don't:
D Pad:
Is used to move around, navigate selections.
A Button:
Used to confirm selections, used to examine things (E.G. Signs),
talk to people (stand next to someone, face them and press A), pick up
items, use TM/HMs automatically.
B Button:
Can sometimes be used to cancel selections, stop pokémon evolving, has other
functions only available later in the game....
START Button:
Displays the in-game menu.
SELECT:
Can be used to quickly select an item (a registered item).
R Button:
May have a function depending on the BUTTON MODE selection.(See The In-game
Menu)
L Button:
Can be set to various different functions. (See The In-game Menu, [001C0])
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
- Registering Items [001B0]
Item registration was introduced in the Gold/Silver versions of the game. You
can set an item to select button so you can instantly use it without going
through the backpack. NOTE: It only works with KEY items.
To do this, go into the BAG from the menu and use the D Pad to switch to
KEY ITEMS. From there select the item you want and select REGISTER.
Now, you'll be able to press the SELECT button when your out in field to
instantly use the registered item, how handy. I would recommend registering
the bike or a fishing rod, but it's up to you.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
- The In-game Menu - [001C0]
You can press the START button to acces this menu. On it, you'll find various
things to go on.
- Pokédex [001C1]
NOTE: The pokédex is obtained early on in the game.
The pokédex is the hi-tech piece of kit that the Professor gives you near the
begining of the game. It is used to record data on the pokémon you, the trainer
, are supposed to catch. You can go on it to look at the information about
pokémon you won, if you like.
- Pokémon [001C2]
NOTE: This is only available after you get your first pokémon.
This is where you can view the battle information about your pokémon (moves,
levels, exp, etc).
Select the desired pokémon and you will be presented with four or more options.
SUMMARY
Summary is the one that lets you see the information about the pokémon. On the
POKéMON INFO screen you can see your pokémon's abilty, it's nature, type(s),
dex number, level and where you caught it. On the POKéMON SKILLS screen you can
view the stats of your pokémon, it's held item, any ribbons it has and it's exp
points. BATTLE MOVES shows you your pokémon's attacks. If you press the A
button you can view detailed info about the moves and rearrange them by using
the A and directional buttons. CONTEST MOVES is basically the same as the
previous one but show the moves' efftect in contests.
SWITCH
Switch lets you change the order of your pokémon so you can change who is
sent out first, very useful if you know who your up against and know the
type advantages/disadvantages.
ITEM
Item lets you give items to and remove them from your pokémon. You can let
a pokémon hold ANY item but only some have an effect. (See the Held Items
section.)
CANCEL
Cancel does exactly what it says, closes the mini menu and returns to showing
you just the party.
OTHER
The extra options you may have are options to use a pokémon's HM moves outside
of battle. Some normal moves can also be used this way. (E.G. Softboiled)
- Bag [001C3]
BAG lets you view items that you have, use them, and throw them away. You can
also give your items to pokémon from here.
- Pokénav [001C4]
NOTE: The Pokénav is obtianed as you progress through the game.
Ahh, the Pokénav. A trainer's best friend. (remember the Pokégear from G/S?
this is like that, but better) The Pokénav, as you will discover,
is a vital tool for any trainer. Lets go over it:
HOENN MAP
This option lets you view the world map, useful for finding out where you are.
Zoom in with the A button to see detailed info on a town/city. Cool!
CONDITION
Condition lets you see the qualties your pokémon have in terms of contests.
NOTE: This will be covered in greater detail in a later version.
MATCH CALL
This is why the pokénav will prove invaluable to you. If you have ever played
Leafgreen/Firered, it's a bit like the VS. seeker but unfortunately not as
good. It is also like the Trainers Eye or whatever it was called in Ruby/
Sapphire. The people with a pokéball next to their name will battle with you.
Even gymleaders will want a rematch!
RIBBONS
NOTE: This will be covered in greater detail in a later version.
- Name [001C5]
Name? No, it's whatever you called yourself. Here's where you check your own
information like money, play time, badges, etc. You can also view your trainer
card by pressing the A button on this screen.
- Save [001C6]
The save option lets you save the game. Simple as that.
NOTE: It is STRONGLY recommeded that you save quite a lot during the game and
before every major battle (gym leader, rival, elite 4, etc).
- Option [001C7]
Option is where you customise your settings:
TEXT SPEED
Set the text speed to whatever you like. (I have it on FAST)
BATTLE SCENE
Choose whether or not to show the animations for the attacks. If your in
a hurry, set it to OFF to not see the animations.
BATTLE STYLE
SHIFT = You can choose to switch pokémon after you faint one of the opponents.
SET = You cannot switch pokémon after you faint one of the opponents. ( You
can still select POKéMON on the battle menu to switch on your turn.)
SOUND
Switch between mono and stereo sound.
BUTTON MODE
Sets the function of the L button
NORMAL = The L button has no function
LR = Use the L and R buttons to switch between screens on the SUMMARY.
L = A = The L button has all of the functions of the A button. (The A button
will still work as well]
FRAME
Select what frame design you want. There are 20 to choose from!
- Exit [001C8]
Exits the menu.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
- Battling [001D]
---------------
Single Battles:
---------------
Single battles are the normal battles you will have with wild pokémon and
many other trainers. Its 1 v 1 and the first pokémon on your list (the one
on the left with the enlarged details)is the one that is sent out first
------------------------
Double Battles || [001D1]
-------------------------
Double battles are fought on two condtions. 1: You have two usable pokémon that
are able to battle. 2: Two trainers spot you at the same time. You can have a
double battle with specific kinds of trainers, they are: Twins, Young Couple,
TV Crew and possibly some others.
In Emerald, there are many situations where you can engage two different
trainers in a double battle. If the are two trainers facing each other at any
time, you can run in between them and they both will challenge you.
There are some attacks that can hit both opponents in double battles. These
include, but are not limited to:
-Surf
-Muddy Water
-Razor Leaf
-Tail Whip
-Growl
-Hyper Voice
There are also some attacks that can hit everybody(except the user). These
include, but are not limited to:
-Earthquake
-Explosion
-Self Destruct
-Perish Song
--------------------------
The Battle Menu || [001D2]
--------------------------
The battle menu is the one that you see when your battling.
You have four options:
FIGHT
Select an attack to use. You can rearrange the attacks here by using the
SELECT button.
BAG
Select and item to use, if you want to.
POKéMON
Switch out a different pokémon.
RUN
RUUUUNNN!! (Flee from battle)
NOTE: RUN cannot be used during a trainer battle or wild battles if the
opponent has the Arena Trap or Shadow Tag ability unless you have the
Run Away ability.
--------------------------------------
Type Resistance/Weakness || [001D3]
--------------------------------------
There are a total of 17 types in Pokémon Emerald. Here is a table
that shows there resistances, weaknesses and immunities:
(resistance is which types are "not very effective", weakness is
which types are "super effective" against and immunities
are which types do not effect it).
--------------------------
Weather Effects || [001D4]
--------------------------
In Pokémon Emerald there are four weather conditions that can affect the
battle, these conditions are:
-Sunshine
-Rain
-Hail
-Sandstorm
Sunshine:
Sunshine is induced by a pokémon using the Sunny Day move or if Groudon is sent
out because of its Drought ability. Sunny Day makes fire attacks more powerful
and Solarbeam does not have to be charged up during this weather condition.
Sunshine produced by Sunny Day lasts for five turns.
NOTE: Drought creates a permanent sunshine effect until another weather is
induced.
Rain:
Rainfall is induced by a pokémon using the Rain Dance move or if Kyogre is sent
out because if its Drizzle ability. Rain also occurs naturally in some parts of
the map. Rain boosts the power of water type moves and also makes Thunder 100%
accurate. Rainfall also decereases the power of fire type moves. Pokémon with
the Rain Dish ability will recover 1/16 of their max. HP during rainfall each
turn.
NOTE: Drizzle creates a permanent rain effect until another weather is
induced.
Hail:
Hail is induced by a pokémon using the Hail move. It creates a hailstorm that
will damage non-ice type pokémon every turn. Hail lasts for five turns. Hail
also gives Blizzard the advantage of 100% accuracy, regardless of any
evasion/accuracy stat changes.
Sandstorm:
A sandstorm is created when a pokémon uses the Sandstorm move or by
Tyranitar's Sand Stream ability. A sandstorm also occurs naturally in the
Desert. Sandstorm will damage a pokémon every turn unless it is ground, rock or
steel type or unless it has the Sand Veil ability.
NOTE: Sand Stream creates a permanent sandstorm effect until another
weather is induced.
----------------------------
Types of Pokéball || [001D5]
----------------------------
There are many different kinds of pokéball in Pokémon Emerald, here is a
list of them:
Pokéball:
The most basic ball for catching pokémon. Works best for weaker pokémon.
Location: Every pokémart.
Great Ball:
Has a higher success rate than the pokéball.
Location: Many pokémarts.
Ultra Ball:
Has an even higher success rate than the great ball.
Location: Some later pokémarts.
Premier Ball:
Has the same qualities as a pokéball but is different in appearence.
Location: Buy 10 pokéballs at a pokémart to receive one of these.
Timer Ball:
The success rate of this pokéball increases every 10 turns used in a
battle.
Location: Rustboro pokémart, Trick House.
Repeat Ball:
Works best for pokémon that are already owned.
Location: Rustboro pokémart
Master Ball:
The best pokéball for catching pokémon. It has a 100% chance of catching any
pokémon.
Location: Team Aqua Hideout
Luxury Ball:
The same success rate of a pokéball but makes it easier for the caught
pokémon to like you.
Location: Obtained after winning pokémon contests.
Safari Ball:
Has a higher success rate than the pokéball. Is used in the Safari Zone.
Location: Safari Zone.
Net Ball:
Has a high success rate of catching water or bug type pokémon.
Location: Mossdeep City.
Nest Ball:
This pokéball's success rate is higher as the wild pokémon's level gets lower.
Location: Verdanturf Town.
Dive Ball:
Has a high success rate of catching pokémon underwater.
Location: Mossdeep City.
---------------------------
Kinds of Attacks || [001D6]
---------------------------
In Pokémon Emerald, attacks are divided into two categories: special and
physical. Whether an attack is special or physical depends on what type it is.
SPECIAL ATTACK TYPES:
Fire
Water
Grass
Psychic
Dark
Ice
Dragon
Electric
PHYSICAL ATTACK TYPES:
Fighting
Normal
Ghost
Rock
Ground
Bug
Steel
Poison
Flying
Before the user's type, oppenent's type and type effectiveness,special attacks
do damage based on the SP.ATTACK stat. Likewise, physical attacks do damage
based on the ATTACK stat.
Defence from special attacks is gauged by your SP.DEFENSE stat and for physical
attacks it's DEFENSE.
--------------------------------
Pokémon Stats || [001D7]
--------------------------------
Pokémon have six stats that determine how strong they are. There are also
accuracy and evasion but they only appear durinng battle.
ATTACK:
This plays a part in determining the damage of physical attacks. During battle,
this stat can be lowered by: charm, growl, etc. ATTACK can be increased by:
Swords Dance, Bulk-Up, Dragon Dance, etc. The abilities that can heighten
attack are Huge Power and Pure Power. ATTACK can be lowered by a foe's
Intimidate. You can increase a pokémon's base ATTACK using the item Protien.
DEFENCE
This plays a part in determining the defence of physical attacks. During battle,
this stat can be lowered by: leer, tail whip, etc. DEFENCE can be increased
by: Harden, Bulk-Up, Iron Defense, Cosmic Power, etc. You can increase a
pokémon's base DEFENSE using the item Iron.
SP.ATTACK
This plays a part in determining the damage of special attacks. SP.ATTACK can
be increased by: Calm Mind, Tail Glow, Growth, etc. This stat can be decreased
by using Overheat. You can use the item Calcium to increase the base SP.ATTACK
stat.
SP.DEFENCE
This plays a part in determining the defense of special attacks. SP.DEFENCE can
be increased by: Calm Mind, Cosmic Power, Growth, etc. This stat can be
decreased by: Fake Tears, etc. You can use the item Zinc to increase the base
SP.ATTACK stat.
SPEED
This stat determines whether or not your pokémon will go first in a battle
(unless moves like Quick Attack or Exetreme Speed are used). SPEED also
helps you to escape from wild battles. If both pokémon use something like
Quick Attack at the same time, the fastest pokémon will go first. SPEED
can be incresed by using Agility or by Ninjask's Speed Boost ability. You
can increase a pokémon's base SPEED by using the item Carbos.
HP
HP (Hit Points) determines how much damage a pokémon can take. Average HP for
a pokémon is about 300-350 at level 100. Low HP is around 250 and below. High
HP for a pokémon at level 100 is 400 and above. Blissey, the evolved form of
Chansey, has the highest base HP (255) and can max out at over 700.
Base HP is increased using the item HP Up. In battle, HP is lowered when you
pokémon receives damage. You can restore your HP by using items like potions or
use moves like recover or absorb.
BASE STATS
Base stats are what determine how a pokémon's stat will grow. There is a base
stat for every stat the pokémon has. Pokémon will appear weaker in some
areas than others.
For example, Magikarp is so weak because it has a base ATTACK of 10. Slaking,
on the other hand, has a base ATTACK stat of 160, making it very strong.
Legendary pokémon usually have all high base stats which makes them appear
better than regular pokémon. For example, Mewtwo has a base SP.ATTACK of
154 and the stat maxes out at 447.
If a pokémon has low base stats (50 and below) it will increase those stats by
1-2, maybe 3, each level it gains. Medium base stats (50-80)will grow at 1-3
usually and sometimes a 4 each level. High base stats (90+) will grow at 2-4
each level and sometimes 5. Very high base stats are those that exceed 110.
Many legendary pokémon have these kind of stats, they will grow at 4-6 points
per level and can sometimes reach up to 8 points per level. For example,
Snorlax has a base HP of 160 it maxes out at 524. Its HP can often increase
by 6 or 8 every level.
NOTE: The above paragraph is based on personal experience and may not be 100%
accurate but it is close.
Before calculating what a pokémon's stats are going to be, you need to
consider its nature and the EVs it has received. See the EVs section for
more information.
Max (Maximum) stats are obtained when a pokémon reaches level 100. You cannot
increase the stats at this level.
--------------
EVs || [001D8]
--------------
EVs or Effort Values are points that your pokémon get when they beat certain
other pokémon. EVs increase the amount a pokémon's stat grows by each level and
ulitmately make it stronger in the desired areas. There are effort values for
each stat. You can have a total of 510 effort points on your pokémon. An
individual stat can have 255 at the most. Therefore, if you wanted to, you
could max out two stats and then have the minumum stat of all the other stats.
There are two ways you can get EVs:
-Battling certain pokémon
-Using vitamins(Protien,Iron,Carbos,Calcium,Zinc,HP Up)
The Macho Brace item will double the EV points you receive in battle. Pokémon
can also get EVs if they are holding the Exp. Share. Using Vitamins on
your pokémon is the quickest way to boost a pokémon's EV count. Each vitamin
will increase the effort value of its respective stat by 10. You can use
a maximum of 10 vitamins on a stat. So, the most you can get on one stat
through vitamins is 100 (10*10 = 100). As there are six stats but only 510
points, you can max out 4/5.
As recommended by Serebii.net(The very best resource for everything Pokémon)
these are the pokémon you should fight to get EVs:
ATTACK ---- Carvanha
DEFENCE---- Sandshrew
SP.ATTACK----Spinda
SP.DEFENCE----Tentacool
SPEED----Zubat
HP----Whismur
If this section has completely confused you beyond help or is not in enough
detail, you can go to Serebii.net's EV guide at
http://serebii.net/pokedex-rs/ev.shtml
Or go on Kenshin075's EV guide on gamefaqs.
-----------------------
Battle Terms || [001D9]
-----------------------
For beginners or people who want to know what the heck I'm talking about when
I'm describing battling, here are a list of terms and their meanings:
OHKO.
OHKO or One-Hit KO. (KO = Knock Out) Means when you manage to faint(Reduce the
targets HP to 0) in one hit/attack. There are OHKO moves such as Horn Drill and
sheer Cold that will always do this and you get the message:
"It's a one-hit KO!"
Critical Hit.
A critical hit is when an attack 'hits the weak spot' and causes much more
damage than an attack would normally. Moves such as Slash have a high
critical hit ratio meaning they will land critical hits more often. You can
increase your critical hit ratio using the Dire Hit item or doing Focus Energy
The messege for increasing the ratio is "?????'s getting pumped!" When
you land a critical hit, you will get the message: "It's a critical hit!".
Super Effective:
A super effective hit is when you use an attack whose type works well
against the opponent. You'll know when something's super effective because
the sound is different and you'll get the message: "It's super effective!".
Not Very Effective:
A not very effective hit is when you use an attack whose type is not good
against the opponent. You'll know when something's super effective because
the sound is different and you'll get the message: "It's not very effective!".
Immune:
If something is immune to another type, any of that type's attacks will have
no effect on the pokémon. You'll know when something is ineffetive because
you'll get the message: "It didn't effect ??????!"
Level:
Level, lvl or Lvl is the pokémons experience level. Levels range from level
2-100. Pokémon learn new moves and may evolve as their level becomes higher.
They will also become stronger. Pokémon that have just hatched from eggs will
be at level 5.
----------------------------
Status Conditions || [001D10]
----------------------------
Status conditions can be inflicted on your pokémon during battle. Status
conditions that are 'Special Conditions' are called by me 'status problems'
Here they are:
STATUS PROBLEMS:
These conditions stay with your pokémon untill they are cured at a Pokémon
Centre or by one of the mentioned items/ways of recovery.
Sleep:
Effect: Pokémon cannot attack unless it uses Snore or Sleep Talk.
Induced by: Hypnosis, Sleep Powder, Spore, Grass Whistle, Rest, etc.
Cured by: Full Heal, Awakening, Chesto Berry, Blue Flute.
Notes: Sleep makes wild pokémon easier to catch, pokémon with Early Bird
ability will awake from Rest in one turn, pokémon can wake up naturally.
The attacks Dream Eater and Nightmare can only be used on a sleeping
pokémon.
Poison:
Effect: Pokémon is steadily damaged each turn.
Induced by: Poison Gas, Toxic.
Cured By: Full Heal, Antidote, Pecha Berry.
Notes: If you have been poisoned with Toxic, the damage will increase every
turn. Many poison type attacks have a chance of poisoning you.
Since Ruby/Sapphire, pokémon have had a nature which will make a pokémon's stat
raises ATTACK but lowers SPEED. Your pokémon gets a higher than average ATTACK
but has a lower SPEED (than the same pokémon).
Here's a list of the natures. Remember, any pokémon can have any nature. If
your hatching an egg you can save just before it hatches and then reset the
game to give it a different one if you desire.
There are 25 natures available in Pokémon Emerald:
||About Pokémon Gyms and The Pokémon League||[001H0]||
[]-----------------------------------------[]-------[]
If this is somehow your first pokémon game, you will want to know what gyms and
the Pokémon League are.
POKéMON GYMS
Gyms are places where the pokémon trainers go to earn badges. The badges are
needed to prove yourself as a trainer and enter the Pokémon League. In Emerald,
each gym has several trainers and a Gym Leader that specialise in a particular
pokémon type. In pokémon games there are usually eight gyms that get tougher
as the game progesses. In pokémon Gold/Silver/Crystal, there were sixteen gyms
in total because the game took you to both the Jhoto and Kanto regions. Gym
badges will also let you use HMs(Hidden Machines) outside of battle. You will
also get a TM(Technical Machine)for beating a Gym Leader.
Pokémon Gyms History:
LEGEND:
Gym Number - Leader Name(Type used)
R/B/Y = Red, Blue and Yellow
After you have beaten the Elite Four once Gym Leaders may appear on the Match
is a new feature of Emerald. As far as I know, all of the rematches will be
double battles. Here's what the Gym Leaders will have in consecutive
rematches:
||About Pokémon Emerald ||[001I0]||
[]----------------------[]-------[]
Pokémon Emerald was the third game released in the GBA generation of pokémon
games. The are many differences between this game and Ruby and Sapphire:
- The Battle Frontier
The Battle Frontier is unlocked after you have beat the Pokémon League and
sailed on the S.S. Tidal and talked to Scott there.
- New and improved double battles
You can now have double battles with any two trainers that spot you
simultaneosly.
- Different Pokémon
Some pokémon have been removed from Emerald that you were able to catch on
Ruby and Sapphire. Also, gyms and the Pokémon League have different pokémon
to R/S and even an alternate Gym Leader and Champion.
Here is a list of pokémon not available for you to catch in Emerald:
~Surskit
~Masquerain
~Meditite
~Roselia
~Zangoose
~Lunatone
These are only the pokémon that you could catch in Ruby and Sapphire and not
in Emerald. These are not all of the pokémon that are unavailable, such as
many Kanto(R/B/Y) and Johto ones(G/S/C).
- Safari Zone Expansion
The Expanded Area of the Safari Zone is available after you win the Pokémon
League. Here you can catch all your favoutite pokémon that appeared in
G/S/C.
- Area Changes
Some places have been changed. The Cave of Origin has been made so that
you do not need Flash to get through. As well as this, the positions of
trainers within some routes has changed and I think there are even extra
trainers in some places.
2 : Walkthrough : [0020]
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
===============================================================================
This is the walkthrough. Let's begin.
___________________________________
Part 01: In The Begining : [002A] /
__________________________________/
NOTE: This walkthrough has been written assuming that you are not trading
from other versions of the game to help you.
Wait, before I begin I will say that you should periodically save your game
all the time and especially before every major battle, just in case you lose.
Major battles are: Gym Leaders, Aqua/Magma leaders, Elite Four and Champion
and Rival battles. NOTE: Only save between individual Elite Four battles
if you really think/know you can win.
Ok, enough chit chat. Begin walkthrough:
When the game begins you will find yourself in the back of a truck, accompanied
by several boxes and some furniture if you look closely. When the door opens,
jump out. Welcome to Littleroot Town.
-------------------[]
Littleroot Town ||
-------------------[]
Places Of Interest:||
-Birch Pokémon Lab ||
-Your Home/House ||
-------------------[]
Once outside you will be greeted by MOM (who from now on I shall refer to as
Mom). After speaking with Mom, go upstairs and check out your new room. Nice.
Go over to the PC in the top-left corner and withdraw the Potion from ITEM
STORAGE. It may come in handy....
Do as Mom suggested and set the clock to the right time (WARNING: You cannot
reset this clock, EVER. So be as accurate as possible), then go back downstair
-s.
Quick! DAD is on telly. Nope too late. He was but you missed him. Ah well, too
bad.
Talk with Mom and she will ask you to go see the neighbours, do so. They live
in the house to the right or left. (If your character is a boy, the house is
on the right and for girls its on the left) Upon entering the house, a woman
will talk to you and tell her about her son/daughter. He/She is apparently
upstairs. Go up the stairs to the stranger's bedroom and examine the pokéball
on the floor. You will confonted by either MAY or BRANDON (Who I will from now
on be refering to as May). After the convesation, go downstairs again and
outside.
You're all done here. Continue to the nothern exit......
____________________________________________
Part 02: "Pokémon, I Choose You!" : [002B] /
__________________________________________/
Go out the north exit of the town and you will witness perhaps the funniest
thing in all of Pokémon game history: A man being chased by a pokémon.
Of course not, it's a professor being chased by a wild pokémon. Who will save
the Prof.?
Walk over the the bag/briefcase and examine it. You will be presented with a
choice of one of three pokémon. Choose wisely.
From left to right, Treecko is a grass type pokémon, Torchic is fire and Mudkip
is a water type. Who will it be? You decide. If you need help choosing you
can consult the Hoenn Pokédex section to see what one you like best.
As soon as you pick, the battle will ensue.
-----------------
POKéMON BATTLE !
-----------------
Opponent: Zigzagoon
Level: 2
Strategy:
Since this is your first battle, I'll give you a strategy. The strategy is
to use your one and only damaging attack (scratch/pound/tackle). About 2-4
hits should KO that Zigzagoon. Easy. You have that potion just incase though.
NOTE: Zigzagoon is a normal type pokémon.
End battle.
Congratulations! You have saved Professor Birch from certain peril.
After eradicatiing the Zigzagoon, you will be escorted back to Birch Pokémon
Lab. In the lab, you will find yourself talking to Birch. He will reward your
heroic rescue with non other than the pokémon you just used to beat that
Zigzagoon. Sweet. Why not give it a nickname while your here? Or more
more importantly, why?
Part 03 : Off To See May : [002C] /
__________________________________________/
Apperently, May is out doing some field work for the Prof, her father, don't
you think it would be a good idea to go meet her? As if you have a choice in
the matter. Head north from Littleroot Town and you will enter route 101.
In route 101 there are no trainers or items. Fight wild pokémon if you like but
it's not necessary right now. Just continue heading north. We're looking for
May remember? Keep going up and you'll reach a new place.
NOTE: You may want to come back here and catch a Poochyena(Dark type) and a
Zigzagoon(Normal type).
When you enter Oldale town, talk to the man standing next to the building
that is to the right of the Pokémon Centre. He will give you a free potion.
How kind. Not much else to do here... Heal up at the centre and continue north
to Route 103.
Route 103 \
[Pokémon:][ Rarity: ] ||
-Poochyena| Common | ||
-Zigzagoon| Uncommon| ||
-Wingull | Rare | ||
----------------------[]
Make note that Wingull is a water/flying. Come back here later if you didn't
get Mudkip and catch a Wingull. If you have Mudkip don't bother. Train up a
few levels if you like but it is by no means necessary at this point. Continue
north in this route, it's kind of a winding path. You'll meet May at the top.
Make sure your pokémon has full health. Talk to May and the battle will soon
begin.
----------------[]
RIVAL BATTLE I ||
----------------[]
-------------------------------------[]
[Pokémon:] [ Level: ] ||
-Torchic/Treecko/Mudkip | 5 | ||
-------------------------------------[]
Strategy:
To win, simply use your damaging attack. This is much like the Zigzagoon fight.
This is slightly tougher than the Zigzagoon but still easy. Just keep
attacking. If you get into trouble, use the potion that you should have. You
can use leer/growl to make things easier for you. (Leer lowers foe's DEFENCE
and Growl decreases ATTACK).
After the battle, follow May back down to Littleroot Town. Once there, go to
the lab. You'll talk with the Prof. and May for a bit. During the conversation,
Birch will entrust you with a Pokédex. It's a 'Hi-Tech encylopedia' that can
record data on pokémon that you catch. Your goal is to fill this pokédex by
catching every pokémon in Hoenn. Sounds easy enough. You will also be given
five, that's right FIVE, pokéballs from May. Pokéballs are the most basic tool
for catching pokémon and you will encounter many other types of Pokéball
throughout the game.
____________________________________________
Part 04 : Adventure Start : [002D] /
__________________________________________/
With your pokédex and pokéballs, you're all set!
NOTE: You can now buy pokéballs from Oldale pokémart and others for Ł200
Head out of the lab and go north. On your way out Mom will stop you and give
you a pair of Running Shoes. Hold down the B button while moving to... RUN!
Go out to route 101, here I recommend catching a Zigzagoon to help you with the
coming trainer battles. Pick up a Poochyena and/or Wurmple if you like. If you
didn't pick Mudkip, grab a Wingull too from route 103 (above Oldale).
Alright, if you didn't already know: you catch a pokémon by first getting
its HP low, preferably in RED and then chuck pokéballs at it. The lower the
level of a pokémon and the weaker it is, the easier it is to catch. It also
helps to put it to sleep or paralyze it.
Now, train your entire party in route 101/103(Yes, all of them) to lvl 6.
That should be enough for now. Heal up at the pokémon centre when you
need to. When they are at 6/7, heal up in the centre and head west to Route
102.
-----------\
Route 102 \
-----------------------[]
[Pokémon:][ Rarity: ] ||
-Poochyena| Uncommon| ||
-Ralts | Rare | ||
-Seedot | Rare | ||
-Lotad | Rare | ||
-Wurmple | Common | ||
-Zigzagoon| Uncommon| ||
-----------------------[]
Route 102, here you will have your first trainer battles. If you didn't get
Treecko/Mudkip then you might want to look for a Seedot or Lotad. Lotad is
water/grass type and Seedot is grass. If you want a Psychic type pokémon and
are patient you can look for a Ralts. Ralts elvolves into a decent Psychic
pokémon. (Ralts learns confusion at level 6). I will advise that if you
get ralts, be sure to let it learn Calm Mind and Psychic.
I will list the trainers in the route in the order that you will encouter them:
Trainer 1:
Name: Youngster Calvin
Pokémon: Poochyena(Lvl 5)
Money: Ł80
Trainer 2:
Name: Bug Catcher Rick
Pokmon: Wurmple(Lvl 4), Wurmple(Lvl 4)
Money: Ł64
Trainer 3:
Name: Youngster Allen
Pokémon: Zigzagoon(Lvl 4), Taillow(Lvl 3)
Money: Ł48
Trainer 4:
Name: Lass Tiana
Pokémon: Zigzagoon(Lvl 4), Shroomish(Lvl 4)
Money: Ł64
(effect spore)
(south, over ledge = potion)
Let's run through these trainers' pokémon. Zizagoon is, as you know, a normal
type. Wurple is a bug type pokémon, Shroomish is a grass type and Taillow is
a flying/normal type.
Simply do not use Treecko, if you have it, on Taillow(grass is weak to flying)
and if you had Mudkip, don't use it on Shroomish. You should be fine.
Things to watch out for are the Poochyena's Howl which raises its ATTACK one
level and Shroomish's Effect Spore ability. Effect spore will inflict a
random status problem(either sleep,posion or paralyze)on your pokémon if it
physically hits (like doing Tackle or Pound). There's a 10% chance of this
happening.
If you explore the route you'll find a potion and some berries just north-east
of Allen. Berries can be quite useful so pick them. There are two Oran berries
that restore 10 HP in battle and Pecha Berries that cure poison during battle.
(You can also use restorative berries like potions)
Berries are held items, go to that section for more info on held items.
Keep going west in this route and you'll reach a new city.
This is Petalburg City. Nice place. Heal your pokémon first of all. This is the
place where that TV interview was from, remember at the start? "Live from
Petalburg Gym"?
Anyway, go north from the centre and enter the gym, look who it is. It's DAD
(who I will refer to as Dad or Norman from now on), speak to Dad. Yes, he is
the Petalburg gym leader. I didn't see that one coming! Your conversation
will be interupted by WALLY. Wally is a pokémon trainer, like you, but as of
yet has no pokémon. That's where you come in. Norman gives him a Zigzagoon to
help him catch a pokémon of his own. You are taken back to route 103.
Wally will catch a LVL 5 Ralts (why can't we find lvl 5 ones?) and return you
both to the gym. After this, Norman will tell that one day the two of you
will battle, but not today. He instructs you to head to Rustboro, that is where
Gym number one is. So, prepare to leave.
So, stock up on items if you feel you need to and head out of the city via the
western exit.
On your way out of the city you will be stopped by a mysterious man who
claims to be looking for rookie trainers and correctly guesses that you are
one.
This route is Route 104.
-----------------------[]
First of all, go south on to the beach and fight the Youngster running around.
Continue west then north and beat the Fisherman that's looking out to sea.
Go east from there pass the little house and follow the path north. Grab the
berries when you see them and then battle the Lady. You will notice that
she uses a full restore on her Zigzagoon when it gets low HP so you'll have
to beat it twice. Notice the Ł1,400 prize money. Sweeeeeet. Ladies and
Rich Boy's will give you loads more money than any other trainers.
Trainer 1:
Name: Youngster Billy
Pokémon: Zigzagoon(Lvl 5), Seedot(Lvl 7)
(BIDE)
Ł112
Trainer 2:
Name: Fisherman Darian
Pokémon: Magikarp(Lvl 9)
Ł360
Berries(follow path north)2x Oran, x2 Pecha
Trainer 3:
Name: Lady Cindy
Pokémon: Zigzagoon(Lvl 7)
Money: Ł1,400
Some new pokémon here. Well, one. Marril is a water type pokémon.
This is like Route 103: Some trainers and some pokémon worth catching. If
you're low on Pokéballs you can buy some in the Petalburg shop. If you
didn't get Wingull you should difintely pick up a Taillow from here. It
evolves into a flying type which is good for quite a while and it is itself
a decent pokémon. Also, if you need a water type you could get a Marill.
Since you don't have many attacks at your disposel just damage the trainers'
pokémon until their HP is 0, although try to use super effective moves if
you can. Explore the route, fighting all the trainers and pick up any items
you can reach. In the north of the route is the entrance to the woods.
Woooooo spooky.
[Pokémon:][ Rarity: ] ||
-Taillow | Common | ||
-Shroomish| Uncommon| ||
-Cascoon | Uncommon| ||
-Wurmple | Uncommon| ||
-Silcoon | Rare | ||
-Slakoth | Rare | ||
-----------------------[]
New pokémon: Silcoon is one of the evolved forms of Wurple, a bug type.
NOTE: Wurmple can elvolve into either Cascoon or Silcoon, it depends on
its gender.
This is an important part of the game. You have the oppertunity to capture a
very, very good pokémon. Slakoth. It may not look much but it elvolves into...
....SLAKING. Slaking has the highest base ATTACK of ANY pokémon.
It can max out at 460. Yes, FOUR HUNDRED AND SIXTY. It is deffintely worth
getting. Its mimumum attack stat is above 300, more than most other pokémon
can get to. Just think, around 400 attack and Hyper Beam...........
Here are the trainers in the Petalburg Woods:
Trainer 1:
Name: Bug Catcher Lyle
Pokémon: Wurmple(Lvl 3) x4
Money: Ł48
Trainer 2:
Name: Bug Catcher James
Pokémon: Nincada(Lvl 6) (x2)
Money: Ł96
NOTE: Nincada is part a bug/ground so use a water attack if you can. Do not use
your Ralts if you got it becuase Nincade will do Leech Life and will likely
OHKO(One Hit KO) it.
When you enter, go right for the hidden potion in the suspicious patch of
grass and go out of the exit and then down a bit to obtain a pokéball.
After you beat Lyle, grab the parlyze heal in the corner.
Moving on, if you don't have a grass type yet and want one, grab a Shroomish.
There are some Bug Catchers in here but you can just blow them away with your
party.
Mid-way or towards the end of the woods you'll run into someone. A reasercher
from Devon Corp. Shortly after meeting him a thug will engage you in battle.
The 'Team Aqua' grunt will use a lvl 9 Poochyena. Not too difficult. Don't let
it use Howl too much though, it raises the ATTACK stat by one level. Beat the
goon and he will run off scared. As thanks, the guy you saved will give you
a Great Ball. Continue through the woods.
There's an Ether nearby so pick that up on your way out
Pretty soon, you will find yourself outside, finally!.
Once you're outside, pick the berries ( 2x Cheri berry and 2x Oran), on the
trees to the left of where you came out. While you're there, speak the the
man standing next to the berries to receive a TM09, Bullet Seed. Bullet Seed is
a grass type move so teach this to Treecko if you chose that or any other grass
type you might have. Go slightly north and you will find a building, go behind
it and get the obvious hidden items in the missing patches of grass and the
other potion. The two hidden items are in furthest down patch and then north-
east of the visible potion.
Now, go into the building. This is the Pretty Petal Flower Shop and you may or
may not be coming back here later. Talk to the girl near the top of the shop
to receive a Wailmer Pail. This is the pokémon world's equivalent to a watering
can which is used to, well, water your berry trees. If you talk to the
girl on the right, she will give you a berry. She will also give you one
tomorrow and the day after. In fact, she gives you a free berry every day.
With your wailmer pail you can now grow berries effectively.
(See the berries section for more info).
Trainer 1:
Name: Rich boy Winston
Pokémon: Zigzagoon(Lvl 7)
Money: Ł1,400
Trainer 2:
Name: Lass Haley
Pokémon: Lotad(Lvl 6), Shroomish(Lvl 6)
Money: Ł96
Trainer 3:
Name: Twins Gia & Mia
Pokémon: Lotad(Lvl 6), Seedot(Lvl 6)
Money: Ł144
Trainer 4:
Name: Firsherman Ivan
Pokémon: Magikarp(Lvl 5)x2, Magikarp(Lvl 7)
Money: Ł280
Quite a few trainers in this route, although nothing you haven't beaten before.
Twins are the first kind of trainer/s that you will have a double battle
with. Double battles are like normal (single) battles but it's two VS two
pokémon. (double battles are explained in more detail in the battling
section).
So keep going through this route, along the bridge and upwards. Eventually,
you will find yourself in Rustboro City.
Welcome. This is the impressive city Rustboro and there's plenty of stuff to do
here, like getting the first badge. However, you're pokémon probably will not
be quite high enough yet, so training it is. Although, as I said, plenty of
stuff to do here.
First of all, heal up you're pokémon as always. This should be your primary
objective when you reach a new town if you've been through a route with
trainers. Your next objective is to go to the house west of the pokémon
centre and talk to the person in there to get HM01, Cut. As you may have
guessed you cannot use it until you have the first badge. You can use it in
battle though, but it's not as though you would want to.
Go back to the entrance of the city and walk to the left. Go in this building
and upstairs one floor. Talk to the child and they will give you a Premier
Ball. These Pokéballs have the same qualities as a Pokéball but look different.
Next, go east of the Pokémon Centre and up a bit to the Trainer's School. Talk
to the teacher at the front of the class and he will give you a quick claw.
Quick claw is a hold item that makes it possible for a pokémon to attack first,
regardless off its speed.(it's not 100% effective though).
Further north of the school you will find the Rustboro Gym. Leave that for
later and continue going north. Leave it for now if you're pokémon are below
level 15, if you're party is at level 14/13 you can fight the trainers. If
you have a level 15 party, scroll down to the gym strategy for how to beat
the leader.
With your fully healed party, go up to the north of the city and follow the
road when it turns east. This is route 116.
Trainers:
Trainer 1:
Pokémon: Wurmple(Lvl 8), Nincada(Lvl 8)
Money: Ł128
Trainer 2:
Name: School Kid Karen
Pokémon: Shroomish(Lvl 9),
Money: Ł180
Trainer 3:
Name: Youngster Johnson
Pokémon: Shroomish(Lvl 8), Lotad(Lvl 8)
Money: Ł224
NOTE:There is an opportunity to get a double battle with Johnson and Devan.
Trainer 4:
Name: Hiker Devan
Pokémon: Geodude(Lvl 8)x2
Money: Ł224
Trainer 5:
Name: Hiker Clark
Pokémon: Geodude(Lvl 8)
Money: Ł320
Route 116 will be your first real training area. The trainers here are
quite varied so you have to be prepared. The hikers will use the rock pokémon
Geodude so use grass or water attacks. Psychic does okay damage but Ralts'
defence is probably to low to withstand an attack from Geodude.
*NOTE: For Torchic users, before fighting the trainers you may want to consider
dedicating most/all of the trainer battles to make Torchic evolve. Combusken
will be your best bet at beating the gym in this case.
In Route 116, you can pick up an Abra and evolve it if you didn't get Ralts.
If you are tired of Zigzagoon or want to use it as a HM slave, catch a
Whismur. Its final evolution Exploud is quite good.
Beat all the trainers in this route. Leave the ones at the top as you will need
to use Cut to reach them, come back later for them if you wish. The cave in
this route isn't worth going in at the moment beacause you need the HM06 Rock
Smash to get through.
Once you have a level 15 party and it consists of a water type with a water
attack and/or a grass type with a grass attack you should be ready for the gym.
For Torchic users, ensure that you evolve it into Combusken
(Lvl 16)so that it learns Double Kick, you will need it. You should have
gathered a fair amount of money by now so you may want to invest in some
potions. Super Potions are a waste of money at this stage due to
your pokémons' HP.
Speak to the leader, Roxanne, to begin the battle.
-----------------------[]
Strategy:
One Water gun from your Mudkip or Wingull or Marill should KO the Geodudes
with no problems. An absorb/Bullet Seed from a Treecko or other grass type
(Seedot or Lotad) also works well.
Nosepass is much harder to beat than Geodude, because of its
pure rock type. All of her pokémon know Rock Tomb, a fairly decent rock type
attack that has 100% chance of lowering speed one level. One Rock Tomb from
Nosepass will faint you Wingull in one hit easily. If you have Mudkip it can
hold up well against this gym and you can win with it. Treecko with Bullet Seed
is a good option. For Combusken users, you have to use Double Kick on Nosepass
to beat it. If you got Ralts or caught a Abra and evolved it, psychic attacks
do normal damage to rock pokémon but your Kadabra/Ralts probably has too
low defence. You might be able to get in one or two Confusions at best.
After winning, take your badge and TM and head out.
NOTE: If you're not planning on getting a rock type, try and teach Rock Tomb to
a pokémon with high ATTACK. However, you might want to save it for later in the
game.
On the way out you will see that a Team Aqua grunt has robbed a Devon
Researcher's goods. The researcher will follow the grunt. You should tag along
but first you need to heal your pokémon. Healed up, go to the north of the
city and you will find the Devon Researher, he wants you to get the Devon Goods
back. Follow the east road into route 116 and then go further east to the
Rusturf Tunnel, you will be stopped at the entrance by an elderly man, he well
tell you that the guy we're persuing also took his darling Peeko!. Enter the
tunnel.
----------------\
Rusturf Tunnel \
-----------------------[]
[Pokémon:][ Rarity: ] ||
-Whismur | Common | ||
-----------------------[]
Whismur is the only pokémon you will find here. Grab the pokéball to the
north and continue going east. You'll find the Team Aqua grunt with Peeko as
his hostage. Peeko is actually a Wingull, you will find. Approach the grunt.
The grunt has trained his Poochyena, slightly, to lvl 11 now. Your level 15
party is no match for him though. Beat the thug and he will surrender the
Devon Goods and the old man will take back his Wingull. You now know that
the man is actually known as Mr. Briney and he owns a sea cottage near
Petalburg Woods. Return to entrance of the cave and go back to the
Devon Researcher who has patiently been waiting for you.
You will receive yet another great ball for your efforts and something else
as well: You get to deliver the goods all on your own! Well, if you want
something done properly, do it yourself.
No, the Devon Goods are not your reward....
The researcher will take you to Devon Corp. HQ in Rustboro City.
After the researcher has spoken to the president, go over to his desk and speak
with him yourself. Devon Corp.'s president, Mr Stone, will give you letter to
deliver to Dewford Town, to someone that goes by the name Steven. No, this
isn't your second reward either, just another errand to run. Your reward,
or now it seems more of an object to bribe you with, is the Pokénav.
The pokénav is like the pokégear of Gold/Silver/Crystal. It has a map and
a feature called Match Call.(Match Call and the pokénav are explained in the
'Read Before Playing' section) The kind old president will also heal your
pokémon.
On your way out a Devon employee will modify your pokénav to add the Match
Call feature.
So where to now?
_________________________________________________________
Part 08 : Devon's Errands and The Knuckle Badge: [002H] /
_______________________________________________________/
If you didn't already know, Dewford Town is an island, meaning it's
surrounded by water. How does one get to an island without surf?
Hold the phone, didn't Mr. Briney say he was a sailor? We need to head for
his cottage by the sea.
Oh, now that you have a pokénav gym leaders that you have beat, amongst other
people, will call yon on your pokénav. Also, remember to speak to all the
trainers on the way back to the woods to register them.
NOTE: Until a certain point in the game, at which point I will let you know,
trainers will not want rematches.
Moving on..... On your way out of the city you will see May. Challenge her if
you please.
-----------------[]
RIVAL BATTLE II ||
-----------------[]
-------------------------------------[]
[Pokémon:] [ Level: ] ||
-Torchic/Treecko/Mudkip | 15 | ||
-Lotad/Wingull/Slugma | 13 | ||
-------------------------------------[]
Stategy:
May's pokémon will vary depending on what starter you chose.
As you can see, if she uses Torchic(you chose Treecko) she will have a Lotad.
If she uses Treecko(you chose Mudkip) she will have a Wingull.
If she uses Mudkip(You chose Torchic) she will have a Slugma.
NOTE: Remember that Torchic is fire type, Treecko is grass and Mudkip is a
water type.
Lotad is a grass/water type so use a flying type pokémon(Taillow/Wingull)and
do wing attack to KO it in 1 hit. Wingull is flying/water so if you taught
Roxanne's Rock Tomb to anything, use that, any normal type you have can
probably beat Wingull easy. Slugma is fire type so use a water type or Rock
Tomb. You know what types the starters are so use whatever you can to get
super effective hits (consult the type chart if you're not sure).
After the battle, May will remind you that Mr. Briney is/was a sailor. Go
down into route 105, registering trainers as you go. When you get to the
other side of the bridge, go down to the bottom right corner and use cut to
obtain an X Accuracy.
Go down into the woods. Near the Rustboro exit(where you just came in) go
right and cut the trees, talk to the girl to receive a Miracle Seed.(The
Miracle Seed is a hold item that powers up grass attacks)Equip a pokémon that
knows grass attacks with the Miricle Seed.
If you look around this new area of the woods and jump down ledges you will
pick up a number of items.
Once outside the woods continue speaking to every trainer so that you
register them all. Follow the parth and at the end of it go left and
you should reach Briney's cottage, go inside.
Inside you will encounter a frantic scene of Briney chasing Peeko around the
table in the centre of the room. Talk to Mr. Briney by coming between him and
Peeko. Briney will take you on his boat to Dewford Town.
On the way there, Norman will call you in mid-sail and register you on Match
Call.
After a short number of seconds of sailing you will arrive in Dewford Town.
