Doom II
Review by MegaKnuckles777
"Doom II is back, with all of the fun of the PC version!"
After hours of beating this great game again and again, I decided I'd let everyone know why they should buy this game, with all the good, the bad and the ugly. (IF there's anything bad or ugly with this game, it's a product of your imagination. Except the bad guys. They're ugly.) Anyways, let's skip to the rating part. *ahem*
Story: 9/10
Doom II starts where part 1 ends, so you're not missing anything. (By this I mean, it's a direct sequel.) I won't spoil much, except that even after your effort, the demons have yet invaded planet Earth, and it's up to you and your weapons to give them the boot and send them back to where they came from. Throughout the game, you will get small stories of what's happening as you progress through. And it's really involving. I guarantee it will leave you satisfied at the end.
Music and Sound Effects: 10/10
The music in Doom II creates the perfect atmosphere for an action/horror game. Most levels have their own music, while some have the same as others, but not all the time. Level 4 and level 28 had their original music stripped out and replaced. Now level 4 has the music of The Pit level, and level 28 (The Spirit World) has the music of the Wolfenstein level. Even so, the music is crisp, loud and clear, and a warning: it may leave you humming them occasionally. (XD)
Doom II's sound effects are one of it's most remarkable aspects. You can hear when monsters are close! It really gives you an advantage when you wanna ambush an enemy, and it almost feels like you're in the game.
Note that also when you pause, there are volume adjusters for both the sound effects and music! What's not to like? Also, let me note that both aspects I mentioned earlier are proof of what the GBA speakers can do. Play this on a Nintendo DS, and you will be even more amazed.
Gameplay: 10/10
O RLY? YA RLY! The gameplay is freaking awesome. You have 4 styles for playing the game, should the need arise. Mode 1 is the simplest, where you strafe with L and R, switch weapons with A + R(or L), map display by pressing Select (or in the Pause Menu), shoot with B, and open doors with A. In the pause menu, there is a sensitivity option, which with you adjust your turning speed. The learning curve is, in my opinion, based on people that have played this, roughly 15-30 minutes. It's easy to get started quickly and after that, master the controls. There are 4 skill levels, named I'm Too Young To Die(Easy), Hey, Not Too Rough(Normal), Hurt Me Plenty(Hard) and NIGHTMARE(Super Hard. o_o) I don't know why they edited the Ultra-Violence skill level, but the game is well balanced the way it is. There are also cheat codes, for you cheating dudes out there. 8 of them, to be exact. There is however, no warp to level cheat.
Graphics: 10/10
Simply, the game survived the transition from the PC to the GBA with very minor edits. The monster sprites retained their look, but HECK! They look better on the GBA! This is probably because of the smaller screen. No matter how much you look around the levels, you will note that every pixel was perfectly translated into the GBA version. Don't worry about getting an eyestrain, it very rarely happens because of the smooth graphics this version of Doom II has. You will be astonished at how well the game runs. The only 2 major edits were that the Industrial Zone and The Chasm levels were both separated into 2 levels, probably for memory purposes. They are still the same as in the PC version, so have no fear! Also, monsters disappear when killed, but Arch-Viles can still revive them. The blood is green in this version, maybe to get the game down to a T rating and so that ID (the company) made more sales.
Replay value: 10/10
If you're like me and like FPS, this one will not disappoint you. Even though you're not given anything at the end (AKA, no unlockables), Doom II is an addictive and solid game that will leave you with your hands glued to your GBA/NDS. After you beat it, try looking for all the secrets in all of the stages for a challenge, plus playing it on Nightmare if you think it's too easy. That alone is more than a challenge: it's an accomplishment. Trust me.
Overall score: 10/10
After playing this game, I felt like every single lint-encrusted penny in my pocket was worth spending on this marvelous piece of work. I feel satisfied with it and strongly recommend you to play it if you haven't. In short, awesome game, awesome development.
