Disney's Kim Possible 2: Drakken's Demise
Review by MetalGearRexus
"I be damned and burnt to crisp in hell! A good Disney game on GBA - June 14 2007"
We all watched Disney shows at a time in our lives, and some, like me, still do and aren't afraid to hide it. Kim Possible isn't one of the Disney shows I really enjoy since the characters, besides Rufus, aren't that original, and the artwork isn't anything special; so, it comes as a surprise to me that I enjoyed this (really short) 2D side-scrolling platformer game based on the show.
The game kicks off by playing a short FMV movie showing Kim Possible's acrobatic skills: breathtaking! But not really, since this is the GBA afterall.
You start your game outside the Taco place of fame were many a Taco got Rufus'd in the shows, and you have to jump, punch, and gadget your way through the various stages. You use the A button to jump, B button to punch (press repeatedly for fisticuffs combo), hold the L button to bring out the gadget menu, select your gadget of choice with the d-pad, and use said gadget with the R button.
Gadgets vary and have various functions, but the one you'll be using the most is the hookshot: once it attaches itself to a hard surface, you're good to swing back and forth. You can jump and use your hookshot in mid-air, grab onto flagpoles, and wall-jump (press A as soon as you touch a wall Super Mario 64 fare), and when you have obstacles that require combos of these and then some, you'll end up feeling satisfied and visually fulfilled--the animations are really good to look at.
Every few or so stages, you'll have a game segment that plays differently: you'll take control of Rufus for example, my favorite segment of the game. You guide Rufus through pipes in order to press a switch, and you do it in pure platforming fashion, jumping over gaps, avoiding punch bags, and releasing ropes to climb.
Enemies are normal fare of fat thugs and ball-toting snowmen--nothing punches and hot sauce can't handle. The bosses are where the fun fights lay at, even if a tad bit easy: the only challenge you'll probably face when you're face to face with the final boss, and even that isn't really challenging. The way the boss fight play out is fun, but I wish Draken slapped the **** out of Kim instead of just being a small hindrance holding the end credits.
And man will the end credits hit you real soon. You can savor your game by backtracking levels in order to use your newly-gained abilities to collect the cards you left behind and finish off all the enemies, but the credits won't wait too long for you: if you rush your game from beginning to end, you can probably finish it off in about 2 hours. Still, you might find yourself picking it up again since the platforming segment are almost always fun, unless you're in one of the snow levels.
Once you've gotten all collectibles in a stage, you'll start unlocking artwork. It isn't really much incentive for you to go back and get everything, but the fun platforming mechanics are. The game will be over far too quickly, but for what it is, it's a really fun title that delivers for platforming and Kim Possible fans alike.
