Summon Night: Swordcraft Story
Review by the_reborn_soul
"Love at first sight"
When I first discovered this, I'd already found the second game and was already loving the battle system and the weapons system. This game became one of my favorites by providing me with an excellent story that proved that sequels are never better.
SOUND/MUSIC: 10/10
You know, usually I drone on simply so I can reach the 400 word minimum. But for this one, all I can think of is one word: beautiful. Simply beautiful.
GRAPHICS: 8/10
Not exactly the games strongest point. While the graphics are pretty good, they ain't the most brilliant of any game I've ever seen, they are pretty good for a GBA game.
GAMEPLAY: 10/10
For those of you who haven't played this game (and whoever you are, go out of your way to acquire it), you'll be blown away by the gameplay if you're anything like me. The battle system is a real time, side-scrolling type.
One of the things that sets this game apart from the masses is the fact that you aren't going to find the weapons just lying around. You'll need to find the materials, then learn how to make the weapon, THEN you make it.
But that's not all! You can also add an element to the weapon by adding various other things into the mixture. You can also customize your stat distribution every time you level, allowing you to make your character just how you want him/her.
Also, depending on your choices early in the game, you can gain one of a few different Guardian Beasts, your constant companion and the spell system for the game.
You can also choose your character's gender. Really, I see no difference except for who gets the romantic subplots, but...that's for later.
STORYLINE: 10/10
You play a young boy (or girl, depending on what you want) who is participating in a tournament to gain the status of Craftlord. Seem kind of generic? Well, I can't tell you more without spoiling the whole thing.
The game is divided into different days, and at the end of the day, you can spend some time with a few of the characters you meet. You can even get a romantic subplot going with a character of the opposite sex.
REPLAYABILITY: 10/10
Between customization, different Guardian Beasts, and spending your nights talking to different people, you're going to have to go through the game quite a few times to get everything.
But, to be honest, I find this game so entertaining that I could play through it a dozen times and still want more.
Summon Nights is one of those games that I never heard about before I stumbled on it by accident. Admittedly, my bad. I missed out on a lot of fun. The game does have a couple of flaws, like the fact that it's pretty short, but it's still one of the most entertaining GBA games I've ever played.
Highly recommended.
