Sabrina The Teenage Witch: Potion Commotion
Review by allamagoosa
"The witch is ok...the cat is not!"
The game, a classic 2-D platformer, is based on the TV series starring Melissa Joan Hart, but the only thing you will find from "Sabrina, the teenage witch" in the game are a few characters to introduce you to the game and the levels, unfortunately without the flavour they have in the series. The game is probably made for the young female players out there or the ultimate fans of Sabrina, it will hardly attract other players, but it deserves some respect for a couple of interesting features.
You get to play Sabrina in 16 levels where she has to collect a different number of items every time and then find the exit. To achieve her goal, she can learn and cast spells with different effects that are usually part of little puzzles to solve or require a little exploring to make the game more interesting and challenging; not that the game is hard to complete, but this way it is not only a jump festival.
Scattered in the levels you may find also mini games that once completed will boost Sabrina's health or magic points. They are a nice addition, and you can play-practice also outside of levels once you unlock them, but unfortunately they are always the same games we have seen for ages like "memory" or an "Arkanoid" type game. A nice thing about these mini games is that you cannot reach them all in the first stages because you need a spell you don't have yet: this way you have to come back later and replay a few levels if you want to find every single thing in the game.
The levels are divided in group of four and take you in what seems the main places of the show: Sabrina's house, the school and the bakery, plus a magic tree. It is not an epic visual experience, nothing you will want to explore over and over to be delighted by what you see, but every single corner is nice to see and colorful. The same can be said also about the sound and music effects...unfortunately there's no music from the series.
The game can be completed in a couple of hours so it is pretty short and a little easy, but the mini games and backtracking to complete everything the game has to offer are a nice addition to make it last a little longer. Only hardcore fans will probably replay this title after completion, so do not expect too much from it.
In conclusion, this is an average game, fun to play for what it has to offer; I would not recommend it as a platformer to buy, there are a lot better than this out there, but it is probably one of the best on the market for ?young? girls and Sabrina's fans won't be disappointed even if they will not find all the funny things that made the series so popular...how can Salem be so serious all the time??
