Earthworm Jim
Review by RockForte
"An excellent conversion of an excellent game!"
This game is great. Very few minor flaws!
Gameplay/ Mechanics (8/10)- The gameplay is great. There are just a few things that I think Game Titan could have converted a little better. That is things that went fast in the original Genesis version go rather slow in this (but the slowness of specific things such as the pod actually improve the mechanics alot! Funny, huh?) A fatal flaw (but fortunately only in the Helicopter Head level), is the collision detection. A million feet away from the thornes (exaggeration), and Jim takes damage for some reason! Hm..? (But its only one small level that literally takes about 35 seconds to finish, so don't worry! Its actually better to let him fall instead of use the helicopter!)
Controls (8/10)- I must say the controls have greatly improved from the original gameboy conversion. Now you can actually hit a separate button to whip. All of the controls are very responsive in the areas where they should be. Though I think the fire and jump buttons should be opposites. But besides that tiny little thing the controls are great.
Story (9 or 2!? /10)- I know what you are wondering...Whats with the score for this field? Well...the story is great...or it sucks...depending on what you are referring to. On the back of the box, some idiot made up some piece of crap story that barely even deserves a 2!! But don't fret! Thats not the REAL story. Not the ORIGINAL. If you read the manual you can read the true original story. Which is great. So well..as I said before...it either sucks or its great. Whatever you do do NOT read the back of the box to this game, you'll throw up! (Well not really, but I thought it would be kinda funny to say that.)
Graphics (8/10)- The graphics are awesome! In perfect light, you'll see that the graphics are much better than even the super nintendo version of the game! But there is another flaw oiver here in the graphics department. A few of the sprites (Sadly, including our pal, Earthworm Jim) are missing a few frames of animation. So the animation can't compare to the original. The movement is not nearly as fluid as before...But who cares!? The game is still great!
Challenge (7/10)- Well I'm not sure how to rate this field. I have played this game so many times (excellent replay value, you should use the level select cheat once you beat the game to go to your favorite level!) that it isn't so difficult for me anymore. Well the game serves a pretty good challenge. For more of a challenge DO NOT collect the blue bubbles in the Andy Asteroids? Levels. (Again, the slowness of certain sprites often adds to the challenge improving challenge and mechanics alot.) There are also three different difficulty settings (Practice, Normal, and Difficult.)
Final Score (9/10)- This has a great strange humor. You'll laugh out loud at alot of things in this game. The instruction manual is very funny as well. Overall this is a great conversion! Many complain about no password feature...Its called Level Select people!! When you can't play anymore, turn it off. Then turn it on...and select the level you want!! Sheesh! Anyway, great game. It is recommended if you own a Gameboy Advance! Buy or rent- BUY!!
