Doom
Review by omega9999
"A classic game makes its triumphant return."
I first bought Doom for the PC when it was originally released. I remember thinking, ''Wow. This game is good. I hope there are more of them.'' I'm glad that ID Software made more Doom Games, and I'm glad the original was ported to the GBA. Let's get started.
The Graphics for Doom are just as good as the original, if not better because of the GBA's processor. My only problems with the graphics are that the blood is green, and that enemies don't stay on the ground after you kill them. Other than that, Doom looks absolutely great. The game is sorta dark, but that can easily be fixed in the ''Options'' menu.
The Controls for Doom are...a little strange, but you get used to them quickly. After you get used to the controls of the game, it becomes quite easy to navigate. The automap is very helpful in your navigation. The automap shows where in the level you have been, and you can activate a special ''Follow Mode'' by going into the automap and pressing the L Shoulder Button. This mode allows you to use the map to navigate while you're moving. The controls are a little fuzzy here, too, but you get used to them quickly.
The game's sound is crisp, and clean, and one of Doom's best features. I've always thought it was helpful to have the game's sound on, because the enemy makes noise once in a while to let you know that they're near, and they know you're coming. The in-game music suits the game perfectly, giving Doom an eerie feel. Although the game's music is toned down a bit due to memory, it still provides just enough suspense to give you a good scare when you open up a door and a demon is waiting for you right behind it.
Doom's overall gameplay is good, with 27 Levels of demon-shooting action. All 3 of the original parts of doom, Knee Deep in the Dead, The Shores of Hell, and Inferno are in this one little cart. Although many levels have been edited to fit in the Gameboy Advance cart, it's still worth a play. All the secrets are still here, from hidden powerups to hidden rooms. The replay value isn't all that good, but it will take a good while to clear all 27 levels.
Overall, I believe that Doom is one of the greatest ports of a game in a long time. While the game does have its share of flaws, it just feels good to carry around an old classic like that. I often find myself starting up a new file just to blow away more enemies. Even if you're not a fan of Doom, but you like First-Person Shooters, pick this game up. It will certainly be worthwhile.
