SpongeBob SquarePants: Revenge of the Flying Dutchman
Review by Ben Zetlitz
"I'll Never Look at a Sponge Seriously Again"
December 26 is always a special day for me. It is the first day I get to play all of the video games I got for Christmas. Well in this case my 8 year old sister got it for Christmas but it is all the same. I started playing this game because it was late at night and I had nothing to do. I was thinking I'd beat the game and go to bed. I thought wrong...
Story = 7
You are Spongebob Squarepants, the lovable, walking, talking, yellow sponge who has been invading every American families' television for about a year now. Now you have your own video game.
The story starts when you are taking your pet snail Gary for a walk in your hometown, Bikini Bottom. Well it just so happens that Gary smells Kelp Nip and runs away. You find Gary by a treasure chest. Once you open it the Flying Dutchman pops out. Being the sponge brain that you are you think he is a genie. The flying Dutchman takes advantage of the situation and tells you if you find hi treasure he will grant you a wish. You then set out to find his treasure.
Gameplay = 6
There are 11 different levels. In every level there are 3 keys that you need to find. After you find the keys you must find the treasure chest that they belong to. Once you open it you get a treasure. This is fun the first few times but it gets really repetitive around level 8. There are also bonus levels if you get all the doubloons. Doubloons are like Mario's coins or Sonic's rings. The bonus levels are fun. For example there is one where you are in a dance contest against a jelly fish.
The controls are very easy to learn. You walk around with the left and right buttons. The A button is to jump and the B button is to blow bubbles.
Graphics = 8
The graphics are good for a Gameboy Advance game. Everything looks smooth. The characters look exactly like they do in the cartoon. There are also some nice screen shots from the show.
Sound = 5
The music is ok. I was hoping for the theme song tune from the show but it was no here to be fund. (You know the whole Who lives in a pineapple under the sea? thing) There is no talking but there never really is talking in Gameboy Advance games. The background music they have gets old and repetitive. The sound for this game is a drag.
Overall = 6
If you can find a place to rent this you should. If you can't rent it or borrow it from someone don't buy it. You will most likely be disappointed with this game because it gets real old real fast. At least it isn't as bad as most other Nickelodeon games.
