Yu-Gi-Oh! Worldwide Edition: Stairway to the Destined Duel

Review by RandyP

"A very fun, addictive game, but more of a director’s cut"

The first thing you notice when you power up Worldwide Edition (hereby abbreviated to WWE) is that it is very much like Eternal Duelists Soul. Not to say that this game alone isn’t fun, but it is actually almost identical to its predecessor with few changes. One of the best things about WWE is the inclusion of more cards. This opens up many new decks, making this game more fun. The only other gripe I have about this game is the half attempt at a storyline; it doesn’t have much of one. I guess half of one is better than none.

Gameplay: 10/10
The best part of WWE is its gameplay. The rules of the real-life card game are in full effect in this game, and it really improves this game so much. The other Yu-Gi-Oh! Games, with the exception of Eternal Duelists Soul, didn’t follow any specific rules, making them much harder to pick up and play. The gameplay will keep you playing this game. The many cards will always keep you thinking of better ways to defeat your adversaries, and the duels are always new and fresh every time.

Story: 4/10
What story? That’s all I can say. Ok, so the very simple story here is much better than the nonexistent story in EDS, but not by much. The story is like this: You are a duelist who is thrown into Battle City and you try to defeat as many opponents as you can. That’s it. That’s all there is. I was hoping for a little more in this so-called sequel.

Graphics/Sound: 8/10
The card pictures are some of the best you will push out of a little 16-bit system that can fit into your pocket. The Battle City map is also not too bad. However, the plain dueling backgrounds can get old and I think that Konami should have made some more interesting backgrounds in this game. As far as the sound goes, it isn’t terrible, but it’s not Beethoven. The tunes here are simple little songs that are, thankfully, easily forgettable. What I hate is those annoying tunes that get into your head… The sound effects here are good, at best. They are all appropriate, however.

Replayability: 9/10
This game is so addictive that you will be playing it long after you’ve collected every single card in the game. It’s that addictive and fun. There are so many decks to mess around with; the possibilities are virtually endless. That alone makes this game very entertaining.

Buy or Rent?
If you collect the real-life cards, like Yu-Gi-Oh!, or just like card games in general, don’t think twice about buying this game. You won’t regret it. If you are a beginner to Yu-Gi-Oh!, this is the right game to get. You’ll get the rules and be beating all comers within days. If you aren’t any of the above, rent first to see if you like it.

In conclusion, I would just like to reinstate the awesomeness of this game. If you like Yu-Gi-Oh, go to the store right now and buy this game. You won’t be disappointed.
