Yu-Gi-Oh! Worldwide Edition: Stairway to the Destined Duel

Review by jerbils

"It's a fun game, plain and simple"

World Wide Edition is my first Yi-Gi-Oh game. And, I'm happy to report that it will not be my last. For ages, I shunned Yu-Gi-Oh, simply due to the hype surrounding it. My curiosity finally got the better of me, and I decided to buy the hot new version for GameBoy Advance. It brought back fond memories of the Pokemon Card game for GBC, which is a good thing (funny, they have nearly identical music). If you want to play a collectible card game, but don't want to burn the money and time it takes to be decent at it, this is a fantastic alternative. In fact, I can't imagine how the real thing can possibly be better than this. The video game incarnation is faster, easier, cheaper than the real thing, and it takes out the need for a second human player. If you are in high school and are not socially allowed to play Yu-Gi-Oh (like me), this is the game you will be playing in the corner of the lunch room. There is little wrong with this game.

Graphics: This game is not about graphics. Regardless, the developer did a good job in this department. The card scans are of top quality, the resolution is superb. The animation used throughout the game is solid, yet nothing to shout about. The graphics are just fine for this game, absolutely no complaints here. 7/10

Control: Being a menu-driven card game, the only controlling you will have is where the cursor is pointed. During battle, it is easy to mess up and accidentally screw yourself royally because you were just moving too fast and forgot something. I know, I've done it dozens of times. If you take your time, you should not find this a problem. 8/10

Sound: I guess it's characteristic for card games to have low quality music, every one I've seen has poor sound. Not really poor, actually, just dated. The music in this game could be easily accomplished on the GBC, but that doesn't make it bad. It's ''beepy,'' if anything. Sound effects were decent. 6/10

Glitches: I want to know who the proofreader for this game is, I want beat some sight into him. There are numerous spelling errors, and since this is a card game, they are extremely annoying. In other respects, the game functions properly. I've been told that the way the video game plays is notably different from that of the actual card game, but having never played the real thing, I wouldn't know. The really clever combos all work, at least as far as I can tell. Not too bad, really. 7/10

Replay: This game truly excels in this category. There are well over 1000 cards to collect in this game, and getting them all will take ages. Even if you are not interested in collecting each and every last one, the battles are loads of fun. And in a card game, isn't that what really matters? This is one game you will have a blast playing for a long time. 10/10

Overall: Yu-Gi-oh lacks a tad in a few areas, but is in general a joy to play. The duels are very entertaining, as well as addicting. I just wish there was a function enabling you to continue a duel if you have to turn the system off during battle. Instead, you must finish each duel in one sitting. A small price to pay, really. Trying new cards, decks, and combos are what make card games great. This game is fun, plain and simple. It is a keeper, pick it up as fast as you can. 9/10
