Gekido Advance: Kintaro's Revenge
Review by Braben
"Man, better not piss Kintaro off…"
Very few people knows about the first Gekido, an obscure 3D beat em-up for the PSX, and I don’t know absolutely anything about it, but it seems it was not very good. However, it also seems that this one has nothing to do with the PSX version.
Kintaro’s Revenge is a beat-em-up like you have never seen before, it has a lot of adventure in it, not everything consist on annihilating everything you see.
There is plot in this game, and a very good one to boot, very intriguing and interesting.
Everything starts when Kintaro’s master tells him to go to a farm town because it seems that’s something weird is happening there.
Rating 10/10: For a beat em-up, the story is perfect.
Graphically Gekido Advance is a total blast, Kintaro’s looks incredibly cool because his movements are incredibly fluid and he a beast kicking his enemies butts.
The anime cut scenes and the enemies are extremely well done, they look great and their animation is superb.
Rating 10/10: Aside from some minor issues like the blurry dialogue boxes, the graphics will blow you away.
The music is very good too, unlike most of the beat em-ups out there the music here changes a lot and it is very atmospheric, the combat music really makes you want to destroy everything you have at sight.
Rating 8/10: Very cool.
The gameplay is what makes this game so cool and also what makes it sometimes extremely disappointing. Kintaro is very easy to control, and his combos and special movements are very easy to make with just three buttons. Once you engage combat you wont even have time to breathe, the enemies are very aggressive, and will try to kill you in no time, plus the combats aren’t very easy, so you will have to be very quick in beating them because you only have one life bar and just a few continues (though you can win more of them).
Now the disappointing problem, sometimes you’ll get stuck and will have to reset your GBA because you’ve done something wrong and there is no turn back. This is something extremely annoying and incomprehensible nowadays, and even more if the game is so good as this one.
Rating 8/10: Impressive, wild, and fun, it could have been perfect if it weren’t for that big problem about not knowing what to do.
This is without doubt, the best beat-em-up I’ve ever played, it is something completely new, interesting and totally explosive, and if it weren’t for that problem (that big problem), the perfect beat em-up.
