DemiKids: Light Version
Review by Shadowsithe
"Props to ATLUS for keeping Shin Megami Tensei in the title"
I have to say that I was overjoyed when I heard that this game was coming out. It's (sadly) not everyday that a MegaTen game is released on the west coast. With ATLUS leaving the Shin Megami sub-title below DemiKids, it's popularity could really improve the chances of a real Shin Megami Tensei game being released. It's not the best of games, but it's MegaTen aspects really make it worth it.
Graphics: 9
Holy! I saw the screenshots and the gameplay movies and though they'd be mediocre. But when I popped in the cartridge and played I was blown away. The detail in the backgrounds both in game, battle, and conversation are absolutely phenominal. The sprites were above average but could have been better. The fact that the enemies don't move was a minor turnoff but it just made me feel like I was playing Dragon Warrior. Overall, major eye candy for those that love it.
Sound: 8
The sound itself was fairly average. One interesting feature that caught my eye, however, was the CD system. In each town in DemiKids, you can go the store and buy the town's background music on a ''CD.'' So when I found I was bored with leveling I would pop in my headphones and flip through all the CDs. Aside from that it isn't really that special.
Story: 7
The whole rebellion against a dark and evil empire skit is getting very old. Jin, a sixth grade student is messing around with a Demon Book and ends up summoning one. After which, he is whisked away to Valhalla to save the worlds from the Imperium. The story is average, nothing more, nothing less. I expected a lot more of a MegaTen game, this doesn't really even compare to Devil Children: Black Book.
Gameplay: 9
The main reason you should buy this game for is the gameplay. It brings it's unique MegaTen flavour out marvelously. Among the game's finer points are the fusion system, and the recruit system. As opposed to just bashing on all your enemies like a traditional RPG, you have the option to coax them onto your side. And with the fusion system you can fuse two demons together to make a completely new one or to improve Rand, your guide. Some demons can only be obtained through fusion. Unique, and fun.
Overall: 8
This isn't a math thing, it's just my overall impression. I really liked this game. If you like RPG's and are willing to put up with an overused story than this game's definitely for you.
