Robotech: The Macross Saga
Review by Red Spearhead
"Repetitive but fun in its own right."
I would not characterize this game as an awesome product of the Robotehc Franchise, but more like a game good enough to earn its own right in my personal collection and fun enough for the average gamer to give it a try.
This game is nicely done. That said, the sound is fairly low quality but the themes of every level are actual themes of the Macross saga. Robotech Battlecry lacked what this little title so richly posses, fidelity to the series. Here you play as real character of the series, and get to pilot different veritechs with real different performances, such is the case that you can tell easily which one is your favority. Not like Battlecry where they were all pretty much the same.
Don't let the limited capabilities of the GBA keep you away from a great Robotech experience. There is not of a personal story for every character but at least you get them not as in Battlecry. You can also create a superior fighter by complementing your abilities with upgrades to put some serious firepower and skills to work from early on. First level might be frustrating for some people because you might not have a good fighter but if you hold together until you can get level 3 upgrades you can finish the game with over 20 lives extra.
There are limited amount of levels but you can level up (just like an RPG) and try to do it in the advance mode for extra challenge. Replay value is determined by your interest to the series more than the game itself. Since you will be coming back to recall episodes rather than enjoy of some shooting.
IT can boring soon for some players that are foreign to the series and will not appreciate the value of unlocking certain veritechs. If you are a Robotech fan as myself, buy it and keep it close to your heart, but if you just want some action it might not be exactly the best game for you. Every level is the same with every character, even the enemies come in the same sequence every time.
Gameplay: 6/10 fun within its limitations. Repetitive but at least challenging enough to keep you interested.
Graphics and Sound 8/10: Great graphics, great music themes, but could have been done better. Lots of real macross saga images to contemplate and great details in every craft in the game.
Replay Value: 9/10. Its up to you. If you like the series very high, for others might not be very interesting. Lots of unlockables and plenty of level up to do here.
Give it a shot if you feel like the good old times. If not get yourself something else :-)
