Onimusha Tactics
Review by Neko 5
"A good game, but with it's own flaws."
So there I was, inside of EB Games looking around. I noticed a used copy of Onimusha Tactics, and bought it immediately. I popped the game into my GBA, and started playing.
Storyline:
Well, what can I say about the storyline? It is certainly original, and can keep you attached to your GBA screen for a few chapters. Although it's not as engrossing as some games, it is good. There are a few moments where you anticipate what will happen next, which is good. There are lots of funny quotes and scenes, even though the story has a dark tone.
Battle System:
Traditional turn-based fighting. You rally up a group of eight fighters, where you must traverse huge maps in order to defeat the enemy. This can be a blessing and a curse since it may take a few turns of waiting to finally reach your enemies and deal damage. However the maps are very beautiful and rich with detail.
Sound:
The music isn't anything to write home about. You'll probably be too focused on the game to even notice the music. During each chapter briefing it is basically the same tune, which kind of turns me off. The actual fighting sounds aren't too dazzling either. Just basic hacking and slashing fare.
Graphics:
The graphics are spectacular. Although the most of the maps may look like rehashes, it isn't too bothersome. The animations are great. They move flawlessly, and look super. While the graphics aren't as vibrant and eye-blinding as FFTA, they make the game stand out from the others. The darker tones set the mood for the story.
Gameplay:
The game is very straight-forward, and may be a turn-off to some. Once you're done with a chapter, it's over. You can't turn back, which brings the game down a little.
The character system is sub-par compared to other games. Characters have a set weapon and use it for the whole game. You can get better weapons through the use of the Genma Stone system. You combine specific stones to create better weapons and armor. You can also use the souls you collect from monsters to enhance your party's equipment.
This game may be good if you're a first-timer to the genre, or if you're a fan of the series. Many characters from previous games make appearances which is a nice feature. Although the game doesn't leave a lasting effect on you, it is good to pop it in once in a while whenever you're bored.
