Fear Factor: Unleashed
Review by enacting
"Fear will never be a factor"
Introduction
If you thought that a reality television programme with virtually no proper storyline could never be made into a video game, well, you thought wrong. Fans would be elated to know that the game doesn't differ much from the show, which even includes actual video footages. Unfortunately, it lacks what the show, and supposedly the game too, is all about - the fear factor.
Game play - 5/10
Like the show, you've to complete "stunts" that test you "physically" and "mentally", but this time game-wise. You get death-defying ones like being thrown in the middle of a railway track, with hands chained and a train heading your way. You have to free yourself within the time limit, and maintain your "fear meter" at the same time. The whole concept is rather revolutionary and promising, but it lacks any excitement as the game tests you on your co-ordination skills more than anything else. Your meter tips dangerously at most times, and you have to watch out and dodge for many other things on-screen. It gets tiring, and even dull, at times. It doesn't help that you won't tell any major difference between the various difficulty levels.
Graphics/Sound - 4/10
The graphics are nothing spectacular, as your character is barely customisable with few options. Nothing looks vaguely realistic, and even the maggots you're supposed to chew on are reduced to a mere green lump. The cut-scenes are ripped from the show, with nothing much new. Throughout your stunts, you can hear repetitive words of encouragement. They happen very occasionally and lack any emotion, and listening to them deadens you instead. The background music lacks anything to call for adrenaline rushes, which are badly needed.
Replay value - 3/10
There isn't much worth coming back for. The only reason why you'll want to play the game the second time over is to see the other contestants do other stunts, which all can be accessed in the Practice Round. The difficulty levels aren't challenging enough.
Final Verdict
The game has a lot of potential, but is not doing well enough to maximise it. A gamer looking for a solid time of excitement and fun should avoid this at all cost. The lack of depth, challenge, and even decent visuals are major flaws of the game. If you really want to try it out, renting would be more than enough.
