Fire Emblem: The Sacred Stones
Review by darkfir
"Just what we want!"
FE: TSS the second game in its series to be released in USA, and to be honest it is one of the best strategy games on the GBA.
FE: TSS plays very similar to FE: Rekka no ken (the first one to be released in USA) which is a great thing. Battles are turn based, you get your chance to make your moves, then it is the enemy's turn.
In battles, you are the tactician which means it is up to you how to make your moves. There are several reasons to why you lost/won the battle. Moving your characters is an important decision you make, placing your archer in the front line will likely cause him to die, as he cannot counter attack. Protecting your fighters is another important thing, a good way of protecting your units is by hiding them in forest or mountains, this way you are increasing their defense and their chance of dodging hits. Then you have the forts, which you can use to recover some of your character's HP.
If you have played the previous FE, you will be very familiar with the weapons rock-scissor-paper system, for instance, swords are strong against axes but weak against lances, choosing the correct weapon will increase your chance of dodging the enemy's attacks. And the same thing goes for magic, like light attacks are strong against dark ones, but weak against elemental attacks.
During battles you have the chance to enter towns, houses, and shops. Houses will provide you some tips, important information about the story, or even fighters will ask you if they can join your quest. Shops are where you can buy/sell weapons, items.
In your journey you will need the money to buy your supplies, such weapons, spells, items. The best way to get money is by using arenas. Arenas are located in some areas, here you can let your units fight continually against different kind of enemies, the more you win the more money you get.
Graphically FE: TSS has not changed much from the previous FE, maps look the same, but animations are better, new classes have been added, and some old are changed, overall nothing bad in graphics.
Class changing is one major improvements in the game, in previous FE game we had the chance to upgrade characters from one class to another one, but now we have two options, instead of upgrading your archer to a sniper, you can change to a forest knight, all in all mean that we have more classes to test, but less characters.
The story is great, nothing less from what I expect from this game, it will start by the kingdom of lunes is under attack from a powerful empire. Eirik and her friend seth managed to escape, and now they are heading to find Eirik's brother Ephraim, the story will get deeper and better,
The difficulty level depends on you, if you are playing on easy mode you will find the game easy, of course you can choose from easy, normal, and hard. Also abusing arena can make your characters more powerful. And another addition for the game, is the ability to go back to a previous map, allowing you to buy weapons, and fighting random enemies, leveling up your characters.
So yes, intelligent system have done it again, bringing us a great strategy game, which will be enjoyed by all fans and newbie.
