Earthworm Jim 2
Review by Super Dark Tooth
"Jim is back in his second game on the GBA, *yawn*"
Whoa, nelly!
Back in the 16 bit days Jim was a hit! With his first game it showed an entirely new side of side scrolling adventures. Jim came back in a sequel surpassing the first in every way. Visuals, music, controls and a new batch of options. He even had a cartoon show on the WB. But once the new consoles came (PSX, N64) Jim wasn't heard until October of 99 when he came on the N64 in 3D! Since all the big characters were doing it (Mario, and Sonic) Jim might as well take a shot. The game tried to be what the 2D games were... funny. It succeeded but got mixed reviews because of it's awful camera system. And now Jim has returned yet again to surprise us all!
And surprised us he did with two mediocre conversions of his two great games. The first one was good, but this one is another story... There are alot bugs and glitches but I wouldn't say it's unplayable, it just takes time to beat the game. They took out the old save system and put in a new password save. Great... like we need a password save for a game like this. The passwords work but when they do you die instantly, which they needed to fix badly and say you have over 100 health and you re-enter using a password then your health becomes 2% or something low, I thought that was a huge let-down.
Nevertheless Jim is back and what he has to offer is kind of fun for awhile.
Graphics 6/10 Disappointing to say the least. The graphics were a beaut on SNES and Genesis but here on the GBA Jim is missing alot of animation. He actually looks like he's been cut and pasted from the SNES to the GBA and the backgrounds look uglier which is another huge let-down since they were great on the SNES and the Genesis.
Sound 7/10 Probably the best thing that was converted, but it still needs work, the voice samples sound muffled and the music is choppy at best but it still sounds good.
Control 7/10 Taking away two buttons from the SNES control might be hard but they managed to have every one of his commands in the game. The whip, gun, manta, etc. It just takes time to get used to it. B is jump, A is fire, R is whip and L is the manta not the best button sequence but it will have to do.
Gameplay 7/10 It surprised me that the gameplay has only changed a bit. You have all nine of the levels that Jim has to go through. But with the GBA screen being small, it gets tedious and what GameSpot says isn't true because I have beaten this game and it is playable but like I said it takes time.
Having a password save is a big mistake! This is where all the glitches come from. Some passwords work some don't, they really did a horrible job. Having save slots would saved this game and make it alot better. Why does Majesco love password saves? It doesn't make sense. After you beat the game there really isn't alot of replay value.
Rent or Buy? Always rent before you buy but if your a big fan of Jim like me and you can find this game for $10 don't bother getting this, just buy the SNES or Genesis version you'll be alot happier.
Grooovy!
