Galidor: Defenders of the Outer Dimension

Review by wolverinefan

"Fun TV show, really bad game."

I really enjoyed the Galidor TV show. It was entertaining and was much better than Power Rangers: Whatever. I only picked up this game because it was 5 bucks and because I only owned 3 GBA games and this was in like Aug. 2005 and I had the GBA since its launch. The game seemed good enough at first, and then I realized how much it sucked.... Let's get this review rolling.

The story is sort of lame. Your friends have been kidnapped by Gorm. Oh noes! What will we ever do? We'll Nick goes and fights Gorm's baddies to get his friends back. That's it, the entire story, nothing more and nothing less. It's really lame for a plot in a game. I don't know what else to say about the plot. It doesn't even fit into the plot of the show.

The graphics in the game are so-so. The colors are nice for the most part but a lot of stuff is dull to look at. The backdrops seem to just scroll the same bland image over and over. The level layouts are almost like a game for the NES days. The character models are poor. Nick's face looks like a blob of smudged paint that just might look like a face if you squint. The cut scenes are still head shots with text....

The sound in the game is mixed. There is no voice acting obviously. The sound effects are decent, not great and not exactly good but they work for this title. The music has me confused at the moment. Either every world just repeats one song or every stage in the entire game has the same song. Either way it gets very old very quickly and the music is an odd techno type of mix.

The control in the game was really good at first. Then I got to swim which wouldn't be a problem if you could jump out of the water without an insane amount of hassle. Also, the fact that your glitch meter can run out and you die because Nick just wouldn't jump out of the god forsaken water. I also found it hard to get Nick to use the grappling hook. It's just near impossible. Thankfully you can control the camera fairly well.

The game play in Galidor could have been good. The level designs are a bit odd, it doesn't always offer a lot of exploring, and is very linear at times. The goal of each level is to get the item and then get to the exit. The item is usually close to the end of the level. The levels are fairly long but the check points are few and far between which isn't a good thing when there are many cheap deaths. The levels also contain little jar like things that you can collect, collect them all and you get something. I don't know what it is because I wasn't able to get all 100 of them. You also get something if you beat the time challenge. The game does offer a lot to do in each level, but why would you want to do half of the stuff. There is one "3D" level in the game, it forces you along a rushed tunnel and you dodge stuff, that's it. There are 4 worlds with 4 or 5 levels and a boss fight.

The enemies are like drones, they don't do a whole lot and you really don't need to worry about them except when you need a double glitch switch thing. By that I mean switch into one glitch and then in the middle of using it switch to your other glitch and use that one. The level usually only has two glitches, they can be frog legs (jump higher), grappling hook (swinging over gaps, this one is very hard to use), a gun (obvious what that one does) and there is also fins which allow you to swim. The thing is, it's hard to turn on the frog legs, jump in the air, switch to the gun and shoot the enemy. The game is truly a trial and error sort of game and at times it's unforgiving. The boss fights are a bit hard because the game either gives you a very vague explanation on how to beta them or none at all. The last boss felt impossible for me because no matter what I did, he kept kicking my butt.

Galidor could have been a good game. But it isn't. The game offers a fun idea of the glitches but the fact that they have a time limit on them and run out if you don't find another icon is a pain. It makes no sense why something that isn't turned on would be drained from energy and I think it's obvious that the makers of this game didn't watch the show. Oh and the game can connect to some sort of Lego thing or something. Not sure what it is since I don't buy toys these days but it's some sort of Galidor Lego toy and this game can connect to it some how. I really can't recommend this game to anyone. Not even to the fans of the show because it doesn't do the show justice.
