My work is something that I am quite proud of, and if anyone is caught
using this FAQ for anything OTHER than what it was desinged for, it is
PLAGAIRISM. Pure and simple. If I receive an email telling me that this
document is being misused on the web, I will contact the webmaster and
demand it be removed. If this is not done within 14 days, I will be
forced to take legal action, and I don't want to go that far. Make my
life easier, and don't plagarise.

Revision History:
v 1.6 - More movesets. Everyone LOVES movesets. Right? Also, a massive
correction to the Move List. Let's put it this way - everything you
thought about accuracy in this game (as well as Gold and Silver) will
change after reading this. Added updated Pokecenter info. Added in the
Mewtation trick, and added the final answer to the question "Donald,
are you writing for Ruby/Sapphire"? Or as final as I can get. *558 KB*
v 1.5: Thanks to Sonuis for just about everything in this update - he
wrote the Item List, and gave me the info on the DV Transfer Trick,
as well as Stat Exp, the Pokerus, and how the Box Trick works. Also
updated the Moveset FAQ, added Breeding Chain information to the Breeding
section, and corrected the Pokecenter moves. Also, if my e-mail is in an
Outlook address book, do me a HUGE favour and take it out. Klez and its
cousins have been swamping my mailbox (which doesn't have much space)
for the past month. And check to make sure you're not infected. *547 KB*
v 1.4: Added a Moveset section, by request of the gamefaqs.com Pokemon
Crystal board. Also added some more Pokecenter Egg moves. *464 KB*
v 1.3: Finally beat the Battle Tower, so check that for hints.
Squirtle90909's Battle Tower FAQ was a huge help. Also, added a way to get
through Mt. Silver without Flash, thanks to JamesXXIV, and made a Hidden
Power correction. And, check the Pokedex for moves you can get on Pokemon
by paying the New York Pokecenter a visit. *412 KB*
v 1.2: Still haven't beat the Battle Tower... good Goddish, that thing is
hard. Added Crystal locations in the Pokedex (can you tell I c/ped from
my GS guide?), added a new DV check, and L50 max stats. Also, st00pid
Donald screwed up Suicune's and Jynx's move list... it's fixed now, don't
worry. Another site has been banned, this time, for plagarism. I warned
them... And last but not least, that nasty ASCII art that I borrowed from
MetroidMoo is in here as well. *396 KB*
v 1.1: If you see this (or my other stuff) at Neoseeker, don't freak out.
They have permission to use the guides. I finished the Walkthrough (man, is
Kanto easy...), Also, I corrected errors that I made in Johto, and
added some GameShark codes (thanks to Togechikku64 and Sakaki Tower). As
for why it took so long... well, I lost my enthusiasm for a while after the
attacks on New York and Washington. Plus, school restarted. *381 KB*
v 1.0: Walkthrough is complete up to the Elite 4, and the Pokedex
is done. Though I haven't had a chance to invade the Battle Tower yet. The
only thing I do know is the rules. *338 KB*
2) The Rules
The little rules that will make my life a whole lot easier.
E-mailers:
-Don't ask me about anything, and the Don means ANYTHING, that's already in
the guide. That goes double for questions listed in the FAQs. Penalty:
Deleted e-mail.
-Do include a subject line in the e-mail. Even if it's Pokemon Crystal
or something similar. Blank subject lines freak me out. Penalty: Deleted
e-mail.
-For the love of Goddish, don't send me chain letters. Example: I've
received an e-mail saying that Jesus and the disciples were gay (wrong
thing to say to a born-again Christian). Penalty: Anything from a deletion
to a blocked address.
-NO SPAM!! Do you have any idea how annoying it is to get e-mails saying
how I can get my morgatge refinanced? I don't own a house, for crying out
loud! Penalty: Probably a blocked address.
-Don't send me Celebi rumors. It isn't in Crystal, end of story. Penalty:
Deletion.
-If you're sending me a trick or something for Crystal, make it at least
sound plausible. I can check these codes with any one of several message
boards, don't forget. Penalty: A sarcastic reply if you're wrong, a spot
in future updates and a big thanks if you're right.
Consider yourself warned.
As for websites:
-The only personal website I'll put this guide on is my own (and maybe my
brother's). So if you want it put on a personal website, I'll give you the
answer now: No.
-If you're putting this on a website, it isn't to be HTMLized, or have ad
banners all over the top of the guide. This guide is to be kept in .txt
form.
-Don't spider GameFAQs and ask all of the contributors if you can use our
work. It just leads to chaos.
-Please, ask me if you want to use the guide, and I'll look your site over.
If you steal the guide, expect your name to be changed to "Mud", and I'm
not talking about the Multi-User Dungeon. Also, you'll appear on the Banned
list right below.
Currently banned:
freshbakedgames.com (Spidering)
frank@cheats.de (Spidering)
pokemonelite.cjb.net (Plagarism)
http://www.cheatcc.com - Mass plagarism
More to come, sadly... Some people just never learn...
3) FAQs
This is the section where I answer some of the questions about the game. Be
warned: If you ask me a question by e-mail that's already in here, it will
be ignored completely.
Q: Which Pokemon are not available in Crystal in any legitimate way?
A: The Red/Blue starters and their evolutions (the Bulbasaur, Charmander,
and Squirtle families), Omanyte and Omastar, Kabuto and Kabutops, the
mystical birds (Articuno, Zapdos, Moltres), Mewtwo, Mew, the Vulpix family,
the Mareep family, the Remoraid family, the Mankey family, Girafarig, and
Celebi.
Q: What are the main differences between Gold/Silver and Crystal?
A: -The Pokemon locations have been shuffled around. Snubbull, for example,
is all over Kanto.
-You can play as a female trainer. (I did.)
-There is a Battle Tower in Olivine City that offers a unique challenge.
-Suicune doesn't run from you anymore. It's in the bottom of the Tin Tower.
-Several Pokemon learn new moves by breeding, and level up. The most notable
is the Baton Pass that Eevee learns at L36.
-The in-game trades are different. Want the Machop in Goldenrod? You'll
have to give up an Abra for it. (In G/S, it was a Drowzee.)
-This game is GBC exclusive.
-The graphics for several levels (most notably the Ice Cave) have been
redesigned.
-There's a new Radio Show in Johto that can lead to some great items.
-The Daycare People on Route 34 give you an Odd Egg. What's in it? Who
knows....
-The Move Tutor is now available, and he's invaluable in team making.
-It's possible to get more than one Element Stone of each type.
-There's a Pokemon Seer in Cianwood Island who can tell you where a Pokemon
was originally caught, among other things.
Q: What HASN'T changed in the past 10 months?
A: -The Gym Leader's Pokemon haven't changed at all
-You still have a choice of Chikorita, Cyndaquil, or Totodile as a starter.
-Celebi is not in the game (&*$^&$^*)
-The TMs haven't changed locations
-Red still has a team that can wreak havoc on you
-That's about it, really.
Q: How do I breed?
A: Leave a male and female Pokemon, or a Ditto and the Pokemon you want to
breed, in the Daycare on Route 34. Eventually, there should be an Egg. (See
the Breeding section for more info.)
Q: What's the Move Tutor?
A: A man near Goldenrod's Game Corner will teach one Pokemon Thunderbolt,
Ice Beam, or Flamethrower for 4000 coins on Wednesday and Saturday after
you beat the Elite 4. You get one shot a day.
Q: When does the Time Capsule open?
A: The day after you hit Ecruteak City. See the walkthrough for more info.
Q: What Pokemon are eligible for the Time Capsule?
A: Any of the original 151, as long as they have no new moves.
Q: What Pokemon swarm, and how do I find out?
A: Pokemon swarms happen only if a trainer calls you and says "You've gotta
see this! A whole bunch of (insert Pokemon here) are swarming all over
(insert location here)!" The Pokemon and trainers you need to contact are:
Ralph on Route 32 tells you when Qwilfish swarm. Fish Route 32 when they do.
Anthony on 33 has information on when Dunsparce swarm. The Dunsparce are in
Dark Cave.
On Route 35, get Arnie's number to find out about when Yanma swarm. Yanma
will be in Route 35.
The # of Pokemon that swarm has decreased since Gold and Silver (Remoraid's
gone, Snubbull's common, and Marill's more common in Mt. Mortar).
Q: Where are the Once-A-Week Siblings, and what do they have?
A: Sibling Location Day Item
Sunny Route 37 Sunday Magnet (powers up Electric)
Monica Route 40 Monday Sharp Beak (Flying)
Tuscany Route 29 Tuesday Pink Bow (Normal)
Wesley Lake of Rage Wednesday Black Belt (Fighting)
Arthur Route 36 Thursday Hard Rock (Rock)
Frieda Route 32 Friday Poison Barb (Poison)
Santos Blackthorne City Saturday Spell Tag (Ghost)
Q: Uh... you've got the trainer's Pokemon listed a certain way, but the
trainer went differently for me. Why?
A: The order that the Pokemon come out is random. Though when you fight the
Elite 4, they'll try to bring out a Pokemon that beats yours. I just list
it in order of levels, lowest to highest.
Q: What attacks are based on the Attack stat? And what about the Special
Attack stat?
A: Normal, Fighting, Poison, Ground, Flying, Bug, Rock, Ghost, and Steel
are all considered physical attacks, and run on the Attack stat. By the
same token, Fire, Water, Electric, Grass, Ice, Psychic, Dragon, and Dark
are Special moves. Hence, they run on the Special Attack stat.
Q: What is STAB?
A: STAB = Same Type Attack Bonus. If the element of the move and one of
the Pokemon's types match, there's a 1.5x bonus. Normal moves do get STAB,
and there's no difference between single and dual-types. (Dodrio's Body
Slam is just as powerful as Snorlax's for example, and their Body Slam is
stronger than Golem's, even though they have the same max Attack rating.)
Q: What Pokemon evolve by Element Stones?
A:
Fire- Vulpix (Ninetales), Growlithe (Arcanine), Eevee (Flareon)
Water- Poliwhirl (Poliwrath), Shellder (Cloyster), Staryu (Starmie), Eevee
(Vaporeon)
Thunder- Pikachu (Raichu), Eevee (Jolteon)
Grass- Gloom (Vileplume), Weepinbell (Victreebel), Exeggcute (Exeggutor)
Moon- Nidorina (Nidoqueen), Nidorino (Nidoking), Clefairy (Clefable),
Jigglypuff (Wigglytuff)
Sun- Gloom (Bellossom), Sunkern (Sunflora)
Q: Where are these stones?
A: Fire, Water, Grass, and Electric: The Route 25 side quest. (See the
walkthrough for more info). After they are exausted, you can Mystery
Gift them.
Sun- Win the Bug-Catching Contest.
Moon- Route 26 (Waterfall area), Mt. Moon on Mondays, Mom might buy one
for you, complete a Ruins of Alph puzzle
You can also pick up extra Stones from trainers in Crystal.
Fire: Schoolboy Alan on Route 36
Water: Fisherman Tully on Route 42
Thunder: Lass Dana on Route 38
Leaf: Picknicker Gina on Route 34
Q: What areas are considered forest, and what areas are considered
mountains? And why does it mean anything?
A: Forest areas are generally considered to be anything between Azalea Town
and Ecruteak City, plus the areas to the west. Everything else is mountain.
It matters because different Pokemon can be found by using Headbutt (TM 2)
on trees in these areas.
Forest area: Caterpie family, Weedle family, Ekans, Venonat, Hoothoot
family, Pineco*, Exeggcute*, Ledyba, Spinarak
Mountain area: Ekans, Spearow, Aipom*, Heracross*
*This Pokemon can only be caught by Headbutting the trees.
Q: I'm in Cianwood Island, and have heard of a Poke Seer. What does he do?
A: His job is to check when/where a Pokemon was caught, at what level it
was caught, and how happy it is.
Q: What are DVs? And do they have any practical use?
A: The Hidden Power element (and the basic damage) is based on a Pokemon's
Diversification Values, or DVs. Each stat (HP, Attack, Defense, Speed,
Special) has a different value. These are locked in when you catch a
Pokemon. (NOTE: These may appear under different names, so the acronym DV
is used.)
The DVs are a number between 0 and 15. A Pokemon with a DV of 15 in a
particular category can achieve maximum stats. If the DV is lower, then
two points are deducted from the stat at L100. (Example: A Tyranitar with
an Attack DV of 8 would lose 14 points from its attack, creating a 352
Attack Tyranitar.)
To determine the Pokemon's DVs, get a ton of Rare Candies, and pump the
Pokemon up to L100, then box them until the stats don't increase anymore.
Compare the stats you have to the max stats in the Pokedex, and you'll find
the DVs. (NOTE2: If you catch a Pokemon with maximum DVs in every category,
consider yourself extremely blessed: The odds of getting a max-DV Pokemon
are approx. 1 in 1,040,000.)
Use this chart to find the DVs.
DV # Off Max Stat
15 0
14 -2 (-1)
13 -4 (-2)
12 -6 (-3)
11 -8 (-4)
10 -10 (-5)
9 -12 (-6)
8 -14 (-7)
7 -16 (-8)
6 -18 (-9)
5 -20 (-10)
4 -22 (-11)
3 -24 (-12)
2 -26 (-13)
1 -28 (-14)
0 -30 (-15)
Another check is to catch the Pokemon you want, then Rare Candy it up
to L50. From there, subtract the stats you have from the L50 max in the
Pokedex. The answers are the DVs.
To find the HP DV, start with H(HP DV) = 0
If the attack DV is odd, add 8. Otherwise, add 0.
If the defense DV is odd, add 4. Otherwise, add 0.
If the speed DV is odd, add 2. Otherwise, add 0.
If the special DV is odd, add 1. Otherwise, add 0.
Whatever H equals at the end is your HP DV.
Q: What's this Stat Experince I hear about?
A: For this question, we go to Sonuis...
---------------
Stat Experience
---------------
Stat Experience is not the normal experience you see and gain everytime you
finish a Pokémon battle. For you see, this type of experience is what the
stat development is based on. When your Pokémon has acquired all of its
maximum Stat Experience, then its statistics have been truly maxed out,
based on the Pokémon's DVs of course. The total amount of Stat Experience
your Pokémon can acquire is 65,536. Now, there is no exact way of
determining how much Stat Experience your Pokémon has, due to the fact that
it is not on the viewable list through the Pokémon sub-menu of your menu
screen. You know if you've used all the vitamins that you've got 6,553
points, but what happens from there? There is a way ou can tell however, if
your Pokémon has acquired all of its Stat Experience. If you know your
Pokémon's DVs, and the stats meet the maximum of the certain DV, then you
know that the Pokémon has acquired all of its Stat Experience. However, if
they do not meet the potential of the DVs, then well... you've got more work
to do.
Note that each stat has its own calculation of stat EXP.
(The work Sonuis refers to is the Box Trick.)
Q: How the heck do you figure out Hidden Power?
A: The HP damage formula is: Base Power = ((X × 5 + Y) ÷ 2) + 31
To get the Hidden Power, you need to determine the DVs of your Pokemon.
*See above* My example is a Jolteon with DVs of 15 in Speed and Special,
and 14 in Attack and Defense. These yield a HP DV of 3. (His L100 stats
are 304 HP, 226 Attack, 216 Defense, 358 Speed, 318 Special Attack, 288
Special Defense.)
Next, convert each DV into a binary number (be it 0 or 1)
If DV = 8+, let # = 1.
If DV = 7-, let # = 0.
Plug them into a number, in the order of Attack, Defense, Speed, Special.
Mine came up 1111.
Check this chart to find what your binary number equals.
Binary X
0000 0
0001 1
0010 2
0011 3
0100 4
0101 5
0110 6
0111 7
1000 8
1001 9
1010 10
1011 11
1100 12
1101 13
1110 14
1111 15
So, the X part of the formula is 15. To find Y, we take our Special DV and
convert it. In this case, the highest possible number is 3. Anything above
this number is reduced to 3.
So our formula looks like this: Base Power = ((15 × 5 + 3) ÷ 2) + 31
Order of operations rules state that we do brackets first. So, we get:
(75 + 3)/2 )+31
(78/2) + 31
39 + 31
70
Our base damage is 70. But what element are we hitting with?
To determine the type we'll be hitting with, convert the Attack and Defense
numbers to binary. 14 in binary is 1110, and we use it twice.
Combine the last two digits of the number. 10 + 10 = 1010, or 10 in decimal
numbers.
Use this chart to determine type.
Value Type
15 Dark
14 Dragon
13 Ice
12 Psychic
11 Electric
10 Grass
9 Water
8 Fire
7 Steel
6 Ghost
5 Bug
4 Rock
3 Ground
2 Poison
1 Flying
0 Fighting
So, Jolteon's got a base 70 Grass Hidden Power. This allows him to almost
KO a Quagsire in one hit, but his HP are in the crapper.
NOTE: Even though you've figured all of this stuff out, the game will still
say that HP's type is Normal. That only comes into play if someone decides
to Counter your Hidden Power. (I've heard of Zapdos with HP Ice let fly
against Sandslash, only to have it Countered back in their face for a faint.
Watch it.)
Q: Donald, are you doing a guide for Ruby and Sapphire?
A: As of right now, the closest to an answer I can give is a "definite
maybe". I recently received the opportunity to help Versus Books write
their Ruby/Sapphire guide, so I may not be allowed to write an RS FAQ
- it'd be a breach of contract.
If, however, this whole Versus thing doesn't pan out, I will more than
likely team up with striker64 to put something together for Ruby/Sapphire.
And based on our past histories, it'll rock.
4) Walkthrough
With all that boiler-plate out of the way, we can start the Walkthrough.
If you want to go through the game without using it, do a Ctrl+F for
"Pokédex" and you'll skip over the Walkthrough completely.
NEW BARK TOWN
Items: Pokegear, Potion
Pokemon: Either Chikorita, Cyndaquil, or Totodile (all MAE: M = Morning,
A = Afternoon, E = Evening).
Good morning, Mr/Mrs. Pokemon trainer. Before you wake up, set the time
(properly, so your clock isn't messed up completely). Then, name your
trainer and proceed downstairs to meet your mom. She'll set your day of the
week and ask if Daylight Savings Time is on.
After some more yakking, you'll get the Pokegear item. This is your watch
and cell phone for now: Later, it can be a map and radio. Leave home and
walk to Prof. Elm's lab. There, you'll be asked to run an errand and get
your first Pokemon.
But which one should you take?
Chikorita-
Pros: Learns its first element move very early (Razor Leaf at L8*!), learns
very useful moves such as Reflect and Light Screen, pure-Grass is a nice
type to have.
Cons: Really only effective against one gym (Cianwood Gym, Poliwrath
specifically), has severe weaknesses to the first two gyms, doesn't attack
very well.
RBY equivalent: Charmander
Edit- whoops, seems I said Chikorita could get RL at L7. If only... thanks
to pokepotter for spotting that.
Cyndaquil-
Pros: Powerful special moves in final form, is effective against the 2nd
gym, looks really tough, evolves to 2nd form very quickly.
Cons: Has one of the most shallow natural move pools, has ONE natural
damage-dealer before L13 (Tackle), has a Defense problem.
RBY equivalent: Bulbasaur
Totodile-
Pros: Water is a very useful type, uses physical attacks well, can Surf,
can support his attacks with Screech later on
Cons: Water has a lot of good Pokemon in it, doesn't have the greatest
Special stats, evolves the slowest of all three starters.
RBY equivalent: Squirtle
(By RBY equivalent, I mean in terms of game difficulty, NOT type.
Apparently, that needed some clarification based on the e-mails I got
about it in the past few weeks. ~_~)
Anyway, make your choice (I took Chikorita personally, but that's just
me), and try to leave. After Elm's aide hooks you up with a Potion, walk
out and go west to Route 29.
ROUTE 29
Items: Potion, Berry, Pink Bow (Tuesday, must have one badge)
Pokemon: Pidgey (MA), Rattata (MAE), Sentret (MA), Hoppip (MA), Hoothoot (E)
Trainers: None
This first route should get you underway in your quest. The Berry is in
a tree, and the Potion is in the upper-right portion of the map. Go
through and try to get your Pokemon some experience. Keep going west
to wind up in Cherrygrove City.
CHERRYGROVE CITY
Items: Map Card (for Pokegear)
Pokemon: None
Trainers: None
When you enter the town, an eldery gentleman will greet you. Take his tour
of the town and he'll give you a Map Card for your Pokegear. After he's
done, heal at the Pokemon Center. If you need Potions, purchase some at
the Poke Mart for $300, then go north to Route 30.
ROUTE 30
Items: Berry x2, Antidote, PSNCure Berry, Mystery Egg, Pokedex
Pokemon: Caterpie (MA), Weedle (MA), Ledyba (M), Spinarak (E), Hoppip (MA),
Pidgey (MA), Hoothoot (E), Poliwag (E)
Trainers: None for now, but you'll be back.
Coming out of Cherrygrove, you'll see a house with a Berry tree beside it.
Snag the Berry, then talk to the man in the house to get another one.
(Try to conserve these: There's an event later on that requires 7 Berries.)
You still can't catch Pokemon, which bites the big one, but hey... When
you come to a fork in the road, go right (you've got no choice). Keep going
up, and you'll come to a Berry tree (PSNCure Berry) and the home of Mr.
Pokemon.
When you enter, Mr. Pokemon will give you the Mystery Egg, which Prof.
Elm wanted you to snag. Also, you'll meet Prof. Oak and he'll give you a
Pokedex, which tracks the # of Pokemon you've seen and caught. After Mr.
Pokemon heals your party, leave the home and take a phone call from Prof.
Elm, who's had one of his Pokemon swiped. Make tracks for Cherrygrove City
again.
CHERRYGROVE CITY REDUX
Items: None
Pokemon: None
Trainers: 1, the Rival
When you go through Cherrygrove City, you'll run into a young man with
red hair. Here's the Rival! Shall we dance?
________________________________________________________________________
Trainer: Rival
Pokemon: L5 Pokemon that beats yours (called Starter hereafter).
Reward: $300
Strategy:
His Pokemon will be the one that beats your Pokemon elementally. If you
chose Cyndaquil, he'll have a Totodile. If you chose Totodile, he'll have
a Chikorita. And if you chose Chikorita, he'll have a Cyndaquil. Get the
picture?
But you don't have to worry about special moves now. Just beat the crap out
of his Pokemon with physical attacks.
________________________________________________________________________
When that fight's over with, heal if needed and go back to New Bark Town
via Route 29.
NEW BARK TOWN AGAIN
Items: Poke Ball x5
Pokemon: None
Trainers: None
When you go to the Lab again, Elm and a police officer will be waiting for
you. The officer will give you a chance to name your rival, and them Elm
will take the Egg off your hands temporarily. On your way out, Elm's
Aide will give you 5 Poke Balls so you can start catching Pokemon
(finally!). Move out to Route 29 and snag all the ones you can, and then
back to Cherrygrove to restock.
This time, instead of going to Route 30, go back to 29 and find a tollbooth
going north. Enter it, and you'll pop out on Route 46.
ROUTE 46
Items: None
Pokemon: Spearow (MA), Rattata (MAE), Geodude (MAE), Phanpy (M)
Trainers: None
Don't worry about the mountain being unclimbable, as you don't need
anything up there anyway. Instead, catch a Geodude and a Spearow here.
Phanpys are rare, but just pick one up for Pokedex data and proceed. Duck
down to Cherrygrove with Geodude and Spearow on your team, and start
leveling them up along the way.
ROUTES 30/31
Items: Potion, Poke Ball, Bitter Berry
Pokemon:
Route 30- See above
Route 31- Add Bellsprout (MAE) and Gastly (E)
Trainers: 4
This time, you'll be able to catch the Pokemon on Route 31. Add any of the
Bugs (I added Caterpie, simply because early Psychic powers are nice).
You'll fight your first trainers here, but they're easy experience for
Spearow (Bug Catchers) and Geodude (Youngsters). Don't take any of the #s
here, as you need to save the slots for important things like Element
Stones and rare Pokemon.
On Route 31, continue the level-up process, and show up at night to find
yourself a Gastly. These are very useful utility Pokemon that start with
a Sleep move, and they're invulnerable to Normal moves. Raise your starter,
the Bug, Spearow, Geodude, and Gastly to L11 while you're in the area.
(Ignore the cave to the east: It's the Dark Cave, with Zubat, Geodude, and
Dunsparce inside. Zubat sucks and can be caught later, you've already got
a Geodude, and you've got to be incredibly lucky to find a Dunsparce
without the swarm being active.)
Anyway, when ready, enter...
VIOLET CITY
Items: Zephyr Badge, TM 31 (Mud-Slap), PRZCure Berry
Pokemon: Onix (trade Bellsprout), Togepi (hatch the Egg given after you
win the badge)
Trainers: 2 Bird Keepers and Leader Falkner are in the Gym
After healing at the Pokemon Center and making sure that everyone's L11,
go to the Violet Gym. After beating around the two minor trainers, engage
the Leader and go after your first badge.
_________________________________________________________________________
Trainer: Leader Falkner
Pokemon: L7 Pidgey, L9 Pidgeotto
Reward: $900, Zephyr Badge, TM 31 (Mud-Slap)
Strategy:
As long as Geodude is at L11, Falkner's toast. Use Rock Throw on the
Flying Pokemon and you should be all right.
_________________________________________________________________________
Clip Falkner's wings to pick up the Zephyr Badge, which allows you to
use Flash out of battle, and TM 31. Mud-Slap's a great annoyer move,
so try it out on Spearow.
When you leave the Gym, Prof. Elm will call you to the Pokemon Center.
There, Elm's Aide will give you the Mystery Egg, but now you've got to
carry the bloody thing in your party until it hatches. In an attempt to
speed up the process, go north of the Pokemon Center to Sprout Tower.
SPROUT TOWER
Items: Paralyze Heal, X Defend, Potion, Escape Rope, HM 05 (Flash)
Pokemon: Rattata (MAE), Gastly (E)
Trainers: 7 Sages, all using Bellsprout at least once
Ah, Sprout Tower. Great EXP for those with Cyndaquil, Spearow, and
Butterfree. Totodile and Geodude, however, are screwed.
From the entrance, go up and take the stairs. On the second floor, go right
to meet a trainer, then the stairs down. When you get to the first floor,
go down to a Paralyze Heal, then double up and go left past the second
trainer to the stairs.
When you come up on 2F, grab the X Accuracy, then go down and to the right.
Take the stairs to the third floor, then snag the Potion. Fight the three
trainers, and you'll see that the Rival has already defeated the Head Sage.
Talk to him, grab the Escape Rope, then fight the Sage yourself.
_________________________________________________________________________
Trainer: Sage Li
Pokemon: L7 Bellsprout x2, L10 Hoothoot
Reward: $320, HM 05 (Flash)
Strategy:
Use Spearow's Peck/Butterfree's Confusion/Cyndaquil's Ember on the
Bellsprouts, and Geodude's Rock Throw on the Hoothoot. Low risk, low
reward (as you'll see).
_________________________________________________________________________
The Sage, impressed with your skills, gives you the HM for Flash after
beating him. Give it to a Bellsprout or something, and leave the tower
with the Escape Rope. (Yeah... stupid Sprout Tower.) From the tower,
heal at the Pokemon Center, and stop by Route 36 if Cyndaquil isn't your
starter. Otherwise, 'tis Route 32 for you.
ROUTE 36
Items: Hard Stone (Thursday)
Pokemon: Bellsprout (MAE), Gastly (E), Growlithe (MAE), Hoothoot (E),
Ledyba (M), Spinarak (E), Pidgey (MA)
Trainers: None that you can get to
Basically, just take the Hard Stone if you can and catch Growlithe. Level
it up (you might want to drop Spearow, but don't bother if you've got
Cyndaquil). When Growlithe's in line with your team, move down to Route
32.
ROUTE 32
Items: Miracle Seed, Repel, Great Ball, Poison Barb (Friday), Old Rod
Pokemon: Bellsprout (MAE), Ekans (MAE), Gastly (E), Hoothoot (E), Hoppip
(MA), Pidgey (MA), Rattata (MAE), Wooper (ME), Zubat (ME)
Trainers: 8, including Fishers, Campers, and Picknickers.
This route is designed to level up your Pokemon, hatch that damn Egg, and
fill up some more Pokedex slots. Wooper's nice if you don't have Totodile
as your starter, but it sucks that they took Mareep away from Crystal
players. Mareep was the only decent Electric you'd have seen until Kanto.
Pick up some of the items, and get the phone number of Ralph (the Fisherman
with Goldeen). He'll call you if the Qwilfish begin to swarm. When you
see the Pokemon Center, enter and get the Old Rod from the Fisherman
inside. At this point, you'll only be able to catch Magikarp and MAYBE
Tentacool with it, but the rods get better with time.
When Togepi has hatched, and you've got the team at L13, enter the Union
Cave. (Cheap pop? Paid advert? Who knows...)
UNION CAVE (Part 1)
Items: Potion, X Attack, Great Ball, Awakening, TM 39 (Swift), X Defend
Pokemon: Zubat (MAE), Geodude (MAE), Onix (MAE), Rattata (MAE), Sandshrew
(MA), Wooper (E)
Trainers: 5, a Pokemaniac, two Hikers, and two Firebreathers
This is a pretty simple cave, and a decent level-up opportunity. From the
start, go left to the Potion, then beat down the two Hikers. Go a little
right, then down to find the Great Ball, then go up a bit and to the left.
Take the path down, then turn left and go up the stairs. Beat down the
trainer, then go down the ladder. When you land, you can go left to the
Swift TM. (For those looking for a full game experience, remember how to
get to this point.)
Double back after getting the TM, and head up to the main floor. From
there, go right and down to get to Route 33.
ROUTE 33
Items: PSNCure Berry
Pokemon: Geodude (MAE), Rattata (MAE), Ekans (MA), Hoppip (MA), Spearow
(MA), Zubat (E)
Trainers: 1, Hiker Anthony
The route is short, but if you need levels, stick around. Be sure to beat
Anthony and get his phone number: Dunsparce is a decent Pokemon, but
incredibly hard to get unless Anthony spots the swarm in Dark Cave.
After getting any and all Pokemon on your team to L14, enter Azalea Town.
AZALEA TOWN
Items: White Apricorn, Lure Ball, Hive Badge, TM 49 (Fury Cutter)
Pokemon: None
Trainers: A set of Twins and three Bug Catchers + Leader Bugsy in the gym,
and the Rival will challenge
When you get into town, heal at the Pokemon Center and pick up some Super
Potions at the Item Shop, then go to Kurt's house. The Berry tree behind
his house is the White Apricorn, which can be useful when beast-catching.
Kurt won't change it into the Fast Ball, however, until Team Rocket are
kicked out of the Slowpoke/Rainmaker's Well, and the Slowpoke returned.
Kurt will run to the Well, so follow him.
SLOWPOKE WELL (aka Rainmaker's Well)
Items: Super Potion
Pokemon: Zubat (MAE), Slowpoke (MAE)
Trainers: 4 Rocket Grunts
Kurt took out the guard blocking the way in, so you can go down. You'd
better, 'cause Kurt threw his back out coming down and won't be moving
for a while. Beat down the four Grunts, and you'll save the Slowpoke.
The final guy looks something like this:
_________________________________________________________________________
Trainer: Rocket Grunt
Pokemon: L14 Koffing
Reward: $352, Lure Ball
Strategy:
If you've got a decent-leveled Butterfree, use its Confusion and Koffing
will go down quite quickly. Also, if you went over-and-above my
recommendation and have a L16 Geodude, use Magnitude and the Poison foe
will drop like a stone.
_________________________________________________________________________
The Rocket will blather for a second, then all of the Rockets will teleport
away and Kurt will bring you back to his place. Talk to Kurt again and
he will do two things:
1) Re-open his ball making operation
2) Give you a free sample: A Lure Ball
<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<SPOTLIGHT: KURT'S SPECIAL POKE BALLS>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
Kurt uses Apricorns (such as the White Apricorn behind his house) to make
special Poke Balls that have different effects. These Apricorns are sorted
by location.
Azalea Town:
White ---> Fast Ball. Catches Pokemon that tend to run away from you in
battle. Examples: Tangela, Grimer, Quagsire, the Mystical Beasts (???)
Route 37:
Red ---> Level Ball. It makes catching Pokemon with lower levels easier.
Examples: Route 2 (near Kanto's Pewter City) Pokemon... they're L3-8, and
you'll probably have a team at around L50.
Black ---> Heavy Ball. Heavier Pokemon are caught by this model. Examples:
Snorlax, any Crystal Legendaries (they average about 500 lbs).
Blue ---> Lure Ball. If you had to fish to find this Pokemon, the capture
rate will go up. Examples: Just about anything that swims (I find them
useful for catching Dragonair on Route 45).
Route 42:
Green ---> Friend Ball. If this captures a Pokemon, the happiness rating
will be much higher. Good for catching Chansey and Golbat (the only two
Pokemon that happy-evolve and can be caught).
Yellow ---> Moon Ball. The capture rate is higher if the Pokemon evolves
by use of the Moon Stone. Examples: Well, there's only four Pokemon that
would need this: Nidorina, Nidorino, Jigglypuff, and Clefairy.
Pink ---> Love Ball. If the Pokemon you're trying to catch is the opposite
gender of the Pokemon you've got out, then the rate increases. Examples:
Think about it.
<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
Back to the game... Heal at the Pokemon Center and then go to the Gym.
After beating around the Bug Pokemon with Spearow/the Fire Pokemon/Geodude/
Butterfree (there's some part-Poisons that will go down to Confusion),
you'll meet Bugsy.
_________________________________________________________________________
Trainer: Leader Bugsy
Pokemon: L14 Metapod, L14 Kakuna, L16 Scyther
Reward: $1600, Hive Badge, TM 49 (Fury Cutter)
Strategy:
Let me say this: If you lose to the first two Pokemon, why are you still
playing? Scyther is another story, tho. If it gets any momentum going
with Fury Cutter, you're gonna have problems (especially those who took
Chikorita), so use Geodude's Rock Throw and score a one-hit KO.
_________________________________________________________________________
After you get the win, you'll claim the badge and pick up the TM for Fury
Cutter. Use if it you want. Now, heal up (especially if Fury Cutter
shredded your team), and get ready to face the Rival. To trigger the
match, head west to the Ilex Forest tollbooth.
_________________________________________________________________________
Trainer: Rival
Pokemon: L12 Gastly, L14 Zubat, L16 starter (2nd form)
Reward: $960
Strategy:
Butterfree's Confusion should handle the first two, then use appropriate
type matchups on the rest. If you're up against Croconaw, use a Grass
Pokemon (Bellsprout coming through?). Quilava opponents should beat it
down with Geodude's Rock Throw or Magnitude attacks, and use Spearow's
Peck or Growlithe's Ember if you're facing Bayleef.
_________________________________________________________________________
After the Rival takes off, enter the dark Ilex Forest.
ILEX FOREST
Items: Revive, HM 01 (Cut), Charcoal, X Attack, Antidote, TM 02 (Headbutt),
Ether
Pokemon: Caterpie (MA), Metapod (MA), Weedle (MA), Kakuna (MA), Pidgey (MA),
Zubat (ME), Paras (MAE), Oddish (MAE), Venonat (E), Psyduck (E)
Trainers: 1, Bug Catcher Wayne
Just to get this out of the way, yes, you could get a Celebi here in the
original Japaneese version, but that capability was removed. Got it?
The first objective is to get the Cut HM. To do it, you'll need to return
a fleeing Farfetch'd to its trainer(s). To do it, talk to it, then when
it stops, loop around (you'll pick up a Revive along the way), and talk
to it again. This will send it toward the entrance to the area. Keep
doing it until you get the Farfetch'd back to its owner, and you'll get
HM 01 (Cut). Now you can Cut bushes that block your path. Head back to
Azalea and grab a Cut Pokemon (it sucks as a battle move, so don't put
it on your power team.)
While you're in Azalea, go directly south of the Poke Mart to the
Charcoal House. The guy who asked you to get the Farfetch'd will
reward you with a Charcoal, which increases the power of Fire moves. With
that in hand (or on Pokemon), return to the forest and use Cut to
open the rest of the forest.
Now, go up and to the right (grab the X Attack along the way). Keep going
until you can go up, or right. Go right and you can pick up TM 02,
Headbutt. This is a powerful move that also knocks Pokemon out of trees,
so give it to someone who needs more power. Try knocking a few trees
around, as well (I saw a Noctowl here that was sleeping when I hit the
tree and wouldn't wake up. Easy catch).
Return to the fork, and go up and to the left. Beat Wayne, then enter
the tollbooth to Route 34.
ROUTE 34
Items: None
Pokemon: Abra (MAE), Ditto (MAE), Jigglypuff (MAE), Rattata (MAE), Pidgey
(MA), Snubbul (MA), Hoothoot (E), Drowzee (E), Odd Egg (see Spotlight for
more info).
Trainers: 6, one only at night (the cop near the Daycare)
Grab anything you don't have already, and pick up TWO Abra (one for trade,
one for use, as Abra and its evolutions are really good Pokemon). Also,
grab a Ditto: It's the official sperm/embryo bank of Pokemon Crystal.
When you get to the Daycare, the man inside will give you the Odd Egg.
For more info...
<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<SPOTLIGHT: THE ODD EGG>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
The Egg you're given on Route 34 is a weird little thing. It can be one
of seven Pokemon: Tyrogue (the baby Hitmon Pokemon), Igglybuff (same,
only for Jigglypuff), Pichu (a baby Pikachu, somehow more sickeningly
cute than its next form), Cleffa (baby Clefairy), Magby (the baby Magmar),
Elekid (the baby Electabuzz made famous by Pokemon the Movie 2000), or
Smoochum (the pre-evo of Jynx). Whatever the Pokemon is, it'll come with
Dizzy Punch.
Also, there's only two ways it can go in terms of stats. It'll either
be shiny with crap Attack, or it will be 0000 for DVs... that means even
if the Pokemon have their personal best, you'll be 30 points off max.
Damn. And what's worse, you've got about a 14% chance of scoring a shiny.
But how do you ensure that the Pokemon will go the way you want? Simple:
Save before you get the Egg and don't save again until it hatches. When
it does, check the Pokemon. If it's shiny, and it's the baby you want,
go with it. I did this, and 15 Odd Eggs later, I got a Shiny Elekid.
Now, it's kicking &*( and taking names as a L40, Thunderpunch/Ice Punch
Electabuzz. And I use it to great effect when laying a beat down on the
Elite 4.
<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
When you get everything, enter Goldenrod City.
GOLDENROD CITY
Items: Bicycle, Radio Card, Blue Card, Bill's phone #, Coin Case,
Mystery Gift capability, Gold Berry, TM 21 -Frustration/TM 27 -Return
(Sunday), Plain Badge, TM 45 (Attract)
Pokemon: Machop (trade Abra on 5th floor of Dept. Store)
Trainers: 4 and a Leader in the gym (two Lass and two Beauties), 4 in the
Underground (Super Nerds and Pokemaniacs)
By the number of items, you can tell that this place is massive. Start
by getting around easier: Go to just before the train tracks, then turn
right and go down to the Bike Shop. Talk to the man inside, and he'll lend
you a Bicycle, assuming that you ride it around.
Next, go to the Radio Tower. You can't miss it: It's the giant black
building on the left side of town. When there, take the simple quiz and
you'll get the Radio Card for your Pokegear. When you get the card, go up
to the 2nd floor and talk to the lady at the desk to get the Blue Card.
Now, you can store points from the Password radio show. (The show's on
between 6 and 12, and you give the password to its host, Buena, the next
morning.)
Now, go to the Pokemon Center, then go up and left a bit, then down to
Bill's House. Talk to the people inside and one will give you Bill's number.
When you call the number, it checks the number of Pokemon in your current
storage box.
Now, it's time to hit the Department Store. Bring an Abra with you, and a
lot of money. The second floor has basic items like Great Balls and Full
Heals (pick those up: They heal any status except for Faint). The 3rd floor
is for X items, such as X Accuracy and Dire Hit. On Floor 4, you'll find
permanent boosters (such as Protein and Iron), which are an arm and a leg.
But Floor 5 is the main stop on your journey. Not only because of the TMs
you can buy (elemental punches and Headbutt), but you can unlock the
Mystery Gift feature by talking to the girl standing near the stairs.
Be sure to come back on a Sunday, as you can pick up either a Return or
Frustration TM depending on the happiness of your lead Pokemon.
Also on the 5th floor, you can make a trade for Machop, a great little
Pokemon. Do it, as there's a Normal gym coming and Fighting is super
effective. It'll cost you an Abra, but that's okay. After you make the
trade, you'll notice that the Machop has a Gold Berry. (NOTE: Right after
I made this trade, I bred the Machop with a Ditto, so I'd have my own
Machop. That's optional, but I wanted my own so I could control it the
whole way.)
Now that we've got half the city cleaned up, it's time to go underground.
To do that, head back to Bill's and go down: The little building leads to
the Underground. Pick up the Coin Case for the Game Corners, and beat
the trainers around if you want. The Underground has three mysterious
shops: One that sells bitter items that's only open on weekends, a trinket
shop that is only open on Monday morning, and a haircut shop.
Now, get to the Gym. As mentioned, it's a Normal gym, so Machop will have
a grand ol' time here. Use Low Kick/Karate Chop to eliminate all of the
minor trainers, and to meet up with Whitney.
_________________________________________________________________________
Trainer: Leader Whitney
Pokemon: L18 Clefairy, L20 Miltank
Reward: $2000, Plain Badge, TM 45 (Attract)
Strategy:
Clefairy isn't a major threat, unless Metronome comes up with Psychic,
then you're screwed. Beat it down with Karate Chop. As for Miltank, I hope
that the Machop you got's female: Miltank ALWAYS is. And Miltank has
Attract, which causes Pokemon of the opposite gender to have a 1/2 chance
of not attacking. Beat Miltank down with Karate Chop as well.
_________________________________________________________________________
Talk to the trainer before Whitney to ensure you get the badge, as Whitney
is a... crybaby. And a sore loser. Whatever you do, don't leave without
the badge and Attract TM. Your next stop is Route 35.
ROUTE 35
Items: TM 50 (Nightmare), HP Up, Arnie's #, TM 04 (Rollout)
Pokemon: Abra (MAE), Ditto (MAE), Jigglypuff (MAE), Nidoran M (MAE),
Nidoran F (MAE), Yanma (MAE), Growlithe (MA), Pidgey (MA), Snubbull (MA),
Drowzee (E), Hoothoot (E), Psyduck (E)
Trainers: 9, various types. There's another Policeman who only comes out
at night
Firstly, open a slot in your party. Then, talk to the tollbooth man
and he'll give you a Spearow. If you run the Spearow back to the fat man
on Route 31 (by the Bitter Berry tree), he'll give you TM 50, which is
Nightmare. Return to the tollbooth, and the guard will give you a HP Up.
Now, when you get on Route 35 proper, be sure to beat the trainers around.
Pick up anything you don't have as well. After you beat Bug Catcher Arnie,
get his phone number, as he'll give you a call when the Yanma swarm.
From Arnie, you can go down and pick up the Rollout TM, and beat the final
trainer. From there, enter the...
NATIONAL PARK
Items: Quick Claw, Paralyze Heal, TM 28 (Dig)
Pokemon: Caterpie (MA), Nidoran M (MA), Nidoran F (MA), Pidgey (MA), Weedle
(MA), Ledyba (M), Sunkern (A), Hoothoot (E), Psyduck (E), Spinarak (E),
Venonat (E)
Trainers: 4, a Schoolboy, a Lass, and Pokefans (both genders)
This is a small place, but there's some interesting (if weak) Pokemon.
Pick up the Sunkern here, and if you had a hard time finding Nidoran,
pick both genders up here.
The items are a little off the beaten path. The Quick Claw (possible first
strike irregardless of Speed) is to the far right of the entrance. Talk
to the woman with the Persian and you'll get it. The other two are through
a hole in the fence in the upper part of the grass, and around. The
PRZ Heal is just a little right, and the Dig TM is as far left and down
as one can go.
However, don't be fooled by this place's small appearence. It's home to
one of the best mini-games in Pokemon history.
<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<SPOTLIGHT: THE BUG-CATCHING CONTEST>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
The Bug-Catching Contest is held every Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday
here in the National Park. There's no entry fee to participate, and
everyone's a winner (to some extent).
In the Bug-Catching Contest, you have one Pokemon and 20 minutes to catch
the strongest Bug-type Pokemon possible. You're given 20 Park Balls, which
about as strong as a Poke Ball and a half. Since you have only one Pokemon,
a Pokemon with a sleep move is recommended (some would say a necessity).
The Pokemon you can get are Caterpie, Metapod, Butterfree, Weedle, Kakuna,
Beedrill, Venonat, Paras, Pinsir, and Scyther. The levels vary (Caterpie
start as low as L7 and go up to L18, whereas Scythers only come at L13/L14).
For best results, catch a Pokemon that is a) rare and b) powerful.
The rarest Pokemon are Butterfree, Beedrill, Scyther, and Pinsir. If you
can get one of these Pokemon at their highest level (15 for Butterfree/
Beedrill, 14 for Scyther/Pinsir), you have a decent shot at winning.
High-leveled Scyther are often the winners, so try to get one of those L14
Pokemon.
What do you get for your troubles?
Participant (4th or lower): Berry
3rd place: Gold Berry
2nd place: Everstone
1st place: Sun Stone
Also, you get the Pokemon that you caught, so this place can fill your
Pokedex as well. This is the only place to catch Scyther and Pinsir in
Crystal, so stop in until you've got two Sun Stones, Scyther, and Pinsir.
<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
Once you've had your fun, move east to Route 36.
ROUTE 36
Items: Ice Berry, Alan's #, Squirtbottle TM 08 (Rock Smash)
Pokemon: Same as Route 36 noted above, plus a Sudowoodo (ONE SHOT)
Trainers: A Psychic and a Schoolboy
Get the phone number for Alan, beat the trainers, then talk to the girl
just before the tree. She'll mention that water was used to get the
tree to move, then run back to Goldenrod. Follow her back and go to the
Flower House north-east of the Gym. Talk to the little girl, then the
bigger one to get the Squirtbottle.
Go back to Route 36, then use the Squirtbottle on the tree (press A). It'll
come to life as a Sudowoodo, a rare Rock Pokemon. To catch it, use a Gastly
or Butterfree's sleep moves, then wear it down with weaker attacks like
Lick, or Machop's Seismic Toss (L19). When it's in the red for health
and asleep, throw Great Balls for the catch.
Catching Sudowoodo will earn you the gratitude of the portly man back
near the entrance to the Ruins of Alph. Talk to him, and you'll get the
TM for Rock Smash. Rock Smash is a weak Fighting move that clears cracked
boulders from the screen.
Now that Sudowoodo's outta here, you can access Route 37.
ROUTE 37
Items: Red Apricorn, Black Apricorn, Blue Apricorn, Magnet (Sunday)
Pokemon: Pidgey (MA), Pidgeotto (MA), Growlithe (MA), Ledyba (M), Ledian
(M), Ariados (E), Hoothoot (E), Noctowl (E), Spinarak (E), Stantler (E)
Trainers: 2, a set of Twins and a Psychic
The Apricorns are on the right side, and make some sweet Poke Balls. The
trainers are pretty easy, so grab the Pokemon and move into Ecruteak City.
ECRUTEAK CITY
Items: Time Capsule, HM 03 (Surf), Itemfinder, Fog Badge, TM 30 (Shadow
Ball)
Pokemon: Eevee
Trainers: 5 in the Dance Hall, 4 and a Leader in the Gym
When you go to the Pokemon Center here, you'll see Bill. He's repaired the
Time Capsule, so you can trade between Crystal and a Red/Blue/Yellow
game starting the day after you arrive in Ecruteak. And, if you follow
Bill back to his Goldenrod home, you get Eevee!
After finishing that quest off, go to the Dance Hall just above the Pokemon
Center. Beat the five trainers inside (each using a different Eevee form)
and you'll get HM 03 (Surf) from the old man. Give it to your Water Pokemon,
as it's the best Water move in the game. (The Eevee forms from left to
right are Flareon, Espeon, Umbreon, Vaporeon, and Jolteon.)
Next, go to the Burned Tower in the north-west portion of the city.
BURNED TOWER
Items: HP Up
Pokemon: Rattata (MAE), Raticate (MAE), Zubat (MAE), Koffing (MAE), Weezing
(MAE)
Trainers: 1, but it's the Rival.
This is a short little place that lost a lot of its appeal in Crystal.
That's because Magmar isn't here... *sulks*. Anyway, you'll need Rock Smash
to get to the item. It's in the upper-right portion of the first floor.
After you do, double back and work your way to the center of the floor,
where the Rival will meet you...
_________________________________________________________________________
Trainer: Rival
Pokemon: L20 Haunter, L18 Magnemite, L20 Zubat, L22 starter
Reward: $1320
Strategy:
The Rival's added a Magnemite to his team, but the little Electric/Steel
has a massive Ground weakness for you to exploit. Geodude's Magnitude
should waste it. Take out the other three Pokemon via the usual method.
_________________________________________________________________________
The Rival claims that only he is worthy to claim the Legendary Pokemon that
are below you... yeah, right. Anyway, once he leaves, the floor opens up
and you fall to the platform of the Mystical Beasts. Time to release the
suckers. (See Catching the Legends for information on actually putting them
in your party.)
Leave the Tower, then head to the gym. The gym focuses on Ghost type
Pokemon, specifically Gastly and Haunter. Getting to Morty is a bit of a
pain, so I drew a little diagram of the path to Morty:
|-----------------------| 0 = Statues
| Morty | 1-4 = Minor Trainers
|_ _| * = End of the pit
|****************|**|
| | 4|
| | |
|3|--------------| |
| | |
| ---------------| 2|
| | |
| | |
| | |
| | |
__| 1|-------------- |__
0| 0
Seeing as you have to fight all of the trainers, you'll get a feel for how
this Gym conducts business. As for Morty... he's slightly more sinister.
_________________________________________________________________________
Trainer: Leader Morty
Pokemon: L21 Gastly, L21 Haunter, L23 Haunter, L25 Gengar
Reward: $2300, Fog Badge, TM 30 (Shadow Ball)
Strategy:
The Ghosts except for Gengar like to use the combo of Mean Look + Curse.
Mean Look keeps you from switching, Curse causes damage to you every turn,
at a cost of 1/2 of the Ghost's HP. (It works differently for other
Pokemon.) Gengar, however, prefers a straight Hypnosis + Dream Eater
combo, which can wreak havoc on your team.
To beat the Ghosts, use Dark, Psychic, and Ground type moves. If you're
raising Kadabra or Alakazam, bring it here and nail all the Ghosts with
Psybeam. Also, Geodude's Magnitude will be quite powerful.
_________________________________________________________________________
After you beat Morty, you'll be able to use Surf out of battle, control L50
Pokemon, and will pick up the TM for Shadow Ball. This is a pretty powerful
Ghost-type move, so save it for later. Instead, move out to Route 38.
ROUTE 38
Items: Berry, Dana's #
Pokemon: Magnemite (MAE), Raticate (MAE), Miltank (MA), Tauros (MA),
Rattata (MA), Pidgeotto (A), Meowth (E), Noctowl (E)
Trainers: 5, various kinds.
Just beat the trainers around and pick up Dana's phone number. Also,
if you need a Berry for the event on Route 39, there's a tree here.
Move left, pick up Tauros/Magnemite/Miltank, and enter...
ROUTE 39
Items: TM 13 (Snore), Mint Berry
Pokemon: Magnemite (MAE), Raticate (MAE), Miltank (MA), Tauros (MA),
Rattata (MA), Pidgeotto (MA), Meowth (E), Noctowl (E)
Trainers: 5, Pokefans and Schoolboys (yet another nocturnal trainer)
If you've got 7 Berries, go to the Farmhouse. After the farmer tells you
of their predicament, go next door and feed the Berries to the Miltank.
Once the Miltank is producing milk again, go next door and pick up TM 13
(Snore). Also, you'll be able to buy MooMoo Milk for $500, which restores
100 HP.
After that's done, just jump ledges and enter Olivine City.
OLIVINE CITY (1st flight)
Items: Good Rod, HM 04 (Strength)
Pokemon: Voltorb (trade Krabby in a house just north of the Olivine
Lighthouse)
Trainers: None
When you enter the town and approach the gym, the Rival will appear. Put
your Poke Balls away: He's not interested in fighting. Instead, he just
runs his mouth about how the leader's weak for taking care of a sick
Pokemon.
After the Rival leaves, go to the Pokemon Center to heal, then to the house
above it. Talk to the man inside and you'll get the Good Rod, which allows
you to catch Pokemon like Krabby, Corsola, and Chinchou. Also, go to the
restaurant (beside the Pokemon Center), and talk to the sailor to get
the HM for Strength. This allows you to move large boulders.
Scuttlebutt around town is that the Gym Leader, Jasmine, is at the
Lighthouse nursing a sick Pokemon. Shall we pay her a visit?
OLIVINE LIGHTHOUSE
Items: TM 34 (Swagger), Rare Candy, Ether, Great Ball, Super Potion
Pokemon: None
Trainers: 9, of various types.
The Lighthouse is a bit large, but it's easy to navigate. Just avoid the
holes and climb up to the 4th floor, then go around the center to another
set of upstairs. Take it up and go down to the Swagger TM, then go up and
around to the Rare Candy. Then, drop down to the 4th floor.
From that spot, go up to the stairs where you came to the 4th floor, and
fall down the hole in the center part of the floor. Beat the trainer, grab
the Ether, and go up the stairs to the 6th floor, and Jasmine.
Jasmine's not leaving until the Ampharos that powers the Lighthouse is
healed, and it needs a Secret Potion from Cianwood Island to be cured.
Obviously, you've got to get it. So, leave by the quickest way possible:
Keep falling down holes until you're on the 1st floor, then walk out.
Before you go to Route 40, make sure you have a Pokemon capable of Surfing
(preferably a good Water Pokemon like Staryu, Chinchou, or even Lapras).
Want Lapras? Give Kurt a lot of Black Apricorns on Thursday, then go to
the Union Cave through the Azalea entrance on Friday. Bring something with
Surf, and a Pokemon with a Sleep move.
UNION CAVE (Part 2)
Items: Elixir, Hyper Potion
Pokemon: Raticate (MAE), Zubat (MAE), Golbat (MAE), Geodude (MAE), Onix
(MAE), Quagsire (E), Tentacool, Tentacruel, Quagsire (Surfing), Lapras
(Friday only)
Trainers: 5, Cooltrainers and Pokemaniacs
When you're in Union Cave, go back to where you could Surf down, or climb
up and get to the room with the Swift TM. Surf downward, and take the
ladder you see. When you appear again, go right and down the ladder.
To get to the items:
Elixir- From the entrance, Surf around the wall and go up. You'll find
it easily.
Hyper Potion- Surf until you come to a three-way fork: Go down, then go
right. The Hyper Potion is on a platform.
As for Lapras, go to the three-way fork and go left. From there, go down,
beat the trainer with Poliwhirl, then Surf right at the first opportunity.
Here's Lapras! Weaken it with medium-strength attacks, then send in the
Sleep Pokemon and put Lapras down. From there, catch it.
Now, head to Route 40.
ROUTE 40
Items: Sharp Beak (Monday)
Pokemon: Krabby (Rock Smash), Shuckle (Rock Smash), Tentacool (MAE),
Tentacruel (MAE)
Trainers: 4 Swimmers, both genders
Route 40 is notable for the Battle Tower that you can access to the north
of the route, the ability to Smash rocks for Krabby (fair Water Pokemon)
and Shuckle (super-Defensive Bug/Rock Pokemon), and being the first part
of a LONG swim to Cianwood. Pick up the Pokemon, then Surf downward to
Route 41.
ROUTE 41
Items: None
Pokemon: Tentacool (MAE), Tentacruel (MAE), Mantine (MAE)
Trainers: 10 Swimmers, both genders
Just keep surfing down and left, and you should reach Cianwood. Mantine
is incredibly hard to find, so don't waste opportunities to catch it.
As for those islands, you'll need the Whirlpool HM to even fully explore
them, and the Silver Wing to get at their greatest reward (Lugia). So,
ignore them for now.
Eventually, you'll hit Cianwood Island.
CIANWOOD ISLAND
Items: Secret Potion, Storm Badge, TM 01 (Dynamicpunch), HM 02 (Fly)
Pokemon: Shuckle (Rock Smash, or in a home), Krabby (Rock Smash)
Trainers: Eusine the Suicune Hunter, plus four Blackbelts and a Leader in
the Gym
Your first stop after the Pokemon Center should be the Pharmacy. The
proprietor will give you the Secret Potion needed for Ampharos back in
Olivine.
Next, move to the north of the city. You'll see... Suicune! It'll take
off, then you'll meet Eusine, the Suicune hunter. He'll challenge you
to a match, but isn't hard to beat.
If you haven't had any luck finding Shuckle, go to a house to the left of
the Pokemon Center. The Pokemaniac was forced into giving your Rival a
rare Pokemon (SPOILER: It's a Sneasel), and will give you a Shuckle if you
agree to keep it safe.
After that, get a Pokemon with Strength and go to the Gym. Get ready, as
you've got to face two trainers back to back. Beat them, then the next two
you see (you won't be double-teamed), then you'll come to some rocks. Use
Strength to move the left and right ones up one, then move the rock in the
middle either left or right. Your path to Chuck is now clear.
_________________________________________________________________________
Trainer: Leader Chuck
Pokemon: L27 Primeape, L30 Poliwrath
Reward: $3000, Storm Badge, TM 01 (Dynamicpunch)
Strategy:
Any decent Flying or Psychic Pokemon at about L28 should have no problem
with Primeape. Poliwrath, however, is another story. It uses the
combination of Mind Reader and Dynamicpunch: Dynamicpunch is a powerful
Fighting move with guaranteed Confusion and only 49.6% accuracy, while
Mind Reader gives the next move Swift-accuracy. Use a Grass or Electric
Pokemon to wear it out, or another powerful Psychic.
_________________________________________________________________________
After the fight, you'll get the Storm Badge (Three to go in Johto!) and
the TM for Dynamicpunch. Now, if Chuck threw in a TM for Mind Reader, we
might have something... Leave the Gym and talk to the woman outside to
receive the HM for Fly. Give this to a Flying Pokemon you're not going to
use (a Pidgey?) then Fly back to Olivine.
OLIVINE CITY (2nd flight)
Items: Mineral Badge, TM 23 (Iron Tail)
Pokemon: None
Trainers: Just the Olivine Gym Leader
Return to Jasmine in the lighthouse. She'll administer the medicine for
Ampharos, and will return to the Olivine Gym. Follow her there.
_________________________________________________________________________
Trainer: Leader Jasmine
Pokemon: L30 Magnemite x2, L35 Steelix
Reward: $3500, Mineral Badge, TM 23 (Iron Tail)
Strategy:
The two Magnemite are easily taken by a Ground-type (Magnitude from a
Graveler will probably kill them). Steelix is a pain, though. It counters
the majority of its weaknesses very well: It's got Sunny Day for those who
want to use Water on it, Rock Slide for Fire Pokemon, Iron Tail for Ground/
Rock Pokemon, etc. Use a Fighting type on Steelix (the Karate Chop of a
Machamp is quite effective) and you'll probably score the badge.
_________________________________________________________________________
Jasmine will give you the Mineral Badge after the fight, so take it and
head out.
Now, who's up for some side items? These are in order of where they can
be found.
New Bark Town: Show Togepi to Prof. Elm and he'll give you an Everstone.
This is a hold item that prevents evolution.
Cherrygrove City: Go to the water, then surf to the island. Talk to the
fisherman and he'll hand over the Mystic Water, which increases the power
of Water-element moves.
Violet City: There's two items that you can Surf to: A Rare Candy and a
PP Up.
Route 32: Use Cut on a bush near the top of the route to find a Hiker. Talk
to him and you'll get TM 05 (Roar).
Slowpoke Well: Go back to the area where the Rocket was, and use Strength
to move the boulder. Go down to the basement, where Slowpoke are common,
you might find a Slowbro, and maybe even a Golbat. Plus, you can get two
rare items: TM 18 (Rain Dance) and the King's Rock. Attach this to a
Pokemon, and any move without a side effect picks up a 9.6% flinch rate.
(Side effects = status conditions, stat changes, the like).
Route 34: Surf down the left side of the route to find a Nugget, and three
trainers. Beat all three (the first two are back to back), and you'll get
the Soft Sand, which increases the power of your Ground moves. (The
trainers use Water Pokemon, so those with Elekids or Bayleefs can pick up
some experience here as well.)
Ecruteak City: There's a hole on the right side of the tower. Fall down it,
then use Strength to get to TM 20 (Endure). Endure makes sure that you
survive any hit with 1 HP.
Now, the next required stop on the itinerary is Route 42. Though this is
also a decent time to complete the rest of the Ruins of Alph puzzles (see
The Ruins of Alph for more info).
ROUTE 42
Items: Ultra Ball, Pink Apricorn, Yellow Apricorn, Green Apricorn, Super
Potion, Tully's #
Pokemon: Rattata (MAE), Raticate (MAE), Ekans (MA), Arbok (MA), Spearow
(MA), Fearow (MA), Zubat (E), Golbat (E), Marill (E)
Trainers: 3, a Fisher, a Hiker, and a Pokemaniac
If you want at the Apricorns, bring a Cut Pokemon with you. Also, bring
something with Headbutt: This area is mountainous, and has Aipom and
Heracross in its trees. Finally, you'll need Surf to proceed.
Just go right, beat the trainers around, and pick up Pokemon (sound
familiar?). Tully is your hookup for Water Stones, so grab his # when you
beat him. At the end of the route is Mahogany Town.
MAHOGANY TOWN (Part 1)
Items: None
Pokemon: None
Trainers: None
Okay, this town is messed up. The Poke Mart's selling junk, the gym is
blocked off, and you can't go east. Seeing as going back is really stupid,
there's only 1 place you can go. That's north, to the Lake of Rage via
Route 43.
ROUTE 43
Items: Bitter Berry, Max Ether
Pokemon: Raticate (MAE), Pidgeotto (MA), Sentret (MA), Furret (MA),
Farfetch'd (MA), Noctowl (E), Venonat (E), Venomoth (E)
Trainers: 6, with Campers, Picknickers, Pokemaniacs, and a Fisherman.
Just a note to those looking to save money: Team Rocket's taken over the
tollbooth, and if you go through it, it's -$1000 for you. Take the grass
path, as you can get new Pokemon.
The trainers are easy, and there's some collecting to do as well. If you
have a Cut Pokemon on you, take the left path to the Lake of Rage.
Otherwise, go right.
LAKE OF RAGE
Items: Blackbelt (Wednesday), TM 43 (Detect), TM 10 (Hidden Power), Max
Ether, Red Scale
Pokemon: Magikarp and Gyarados by Surfing, plus there's a Shiny Gyarados
in the water (one shot)
Trainers: None until Team Rocket is beaten
The left path needs Cut to navigate, but leads to a couple of good TMs,
the Blackbelt (Fighting power-up) on Wednesday, and the always-useful Max
Ether. Get what you can.
For those who took the right path, you'll see that no one wants to battle.
That's because they're all worried about the Gyarados showing up in the
middle of the lake. Speaking of, there's a Shiny (aka Red) Gyarados in the
lake. It's a one-shot deal, so do your darndest to catch it (the Ultra
Ball from Route 42 might be needed). After you deal with it by catching
or fainting it, you'll get the Red Scale item. (The Scale can be given to
Mr. Pokemon on Route 30 for an Exp. Share, but that's a side item.)
After you deal with the Gyarados, return to shore and speak with Lance.
He'll express his feelings about the Gyarados, then ask you to help him
deal with the situation. Do it, and head back to Mahogany's Poke Mart.
Lance will deal with the guard, then head down a flight of stairs. Follow
him, and you'll meet up with Team Rocket.
TEAM ROCKET- MAHOGANY
Items: Hyper Potion, Guard Spec, Nugget, Ice Heal, Protein, Full Heal,
Dire Hit, TM 46 (Thief), Ultra Ball, HM 06 (Whirlpool)
Pokemon: Geodude, Koffing, Voltorb, and Electrode (you'll see why)
Trainers: 10 Grunts and Scientists, plus two Rocket Executives. The Rival
shows up, but won't battle
When you arrive downstairs, you'll fall victim to a Team Rocket trap.
Passing by any of the golden Persian statues will send a Rocket after
you. Beat him, and another shows up! To stop the traps, you'll have to
get to the computer and shut it down. How? Simple: Go left until you see
another statue. You should see a path leading down, take it. Go right
and down when the opportunity presents itself, and you'll be in a small
hallway. Go all the way left, then down and right. Beat the Scientist,
then activate the computer to shut it down.
Pick up the items on the floor, then try stepping in the alternating-
colored squares near a staircase. Step in the wrong spot, and you'll
trigger the second trap: Wild Geodude, Koffing, and Voltorb will attempt
to blow up in your face. If you don't have Voltorb, catch it. For the
rest, stick a Graveler/Golem out in front, as they are resistant to Self-
destruct.
Take those stairs down, and Lance will see you. Talk to him, and he'll
heal your Pokemon. Once. Go right, and you'll see what appears to be
a generator. We'll take care of that later. Right now, you need to get
the passwords to see the executive. Go right, down, and right again to
find stairs.
Now you're in the third sub-basement. Pick up the items, and beat all the
trainers. Make sure you talk to them after the fight, as they have
information, and passwords. The two with passwords are:
-The female in the computer bank near the entrance
-The male near the Full Heal and Dire Hit items
When you have the passwords, go to the upper-right corner of the floor.
Take the stairs, then go left. Beat the trainer, then go down. The set
of stairs in front of you lead to TM 46 (Thief), which is a decent Dark
move. Pick it up, then go back down and head right. The Rival will show
up, but Lance destroyed him. So, you don't have to fight him. That's
good, as you need your Pokemon to be in decent shape for the Male
Executive through that locked door...
_________________________________________________________________________
Trainer: Rocket Executive (Male)
Pokemon: L22 Zubat, L22 Koffing, L24 Raticate
Reward: $1584, Generator Password
Strategy:
You'd think an executive of a Pokemon theft company would have better
Pokemon... A decent Rock-type Pokemon will beat him around pretty handily.
_________________________________________________________________________
Afterwards, talk to his Murkrow and get the password for the generator.
Work your way back, then open the generator door. The Executives will
double-team you, but Lance appears and takes on the male. This leaves
you with...
_________________________________________________________________________
Trainer: Rocket Executive (Female)
Pokemon: L26 Ekans, L26 Gloom, L26 Murkrow
Reward: $1800, Generator room access
Strategy:
A Psychic should be able to handle the first two Pokemon, and if it's
got Thunder or Ice Punch from Goldenrod, Murkrow goes down easily as
well.
_________________________________________________________________________
Now that the riff-raff is out of the way, you've got to shut down the
generator. It's being powered by SIX Electrode. Lance will take the three
on the right, so you've got to catch or faint the three on the left. Do
it and the mission will be complete. As a reward, Lance will give you HM
06, which is Whirlpool. You can't use Whirlpool out of battle until you get
the Glacier Badge, so that seems like a logical next stop.
MAHOGANY CITY (Part 2)
Items: Glaicer Badge, TM 16 (Icy Wind)
Pokemon: None
Trainers: 5 and a Leader in the gym
Taking on the minor trainers will give you some insight into the power of
Ice Pokemon: They're weak to Fire, Fighting, Steel, and Rock normally, but
some of the dual-types mess that up. Bring Water and Electric Pokemon
for backup. As for getting to Pryce, go to the left of the left statue,
then skate up until you bump into a trainer. Skate right, down, left,
up, and right again to find the leader.
_________________________________________________________________________
Trainer: Leader Pryce
Pokemon: L27 Seel, L29 Dewgong, L31 Pilowswine
Reward: $3100, Glacier Badge, TM 16 (Icy Wind)
Strategy:
Seel is a traditional Water Pokemon, and should be dealt with accordingly.
Dewgong's also part-Water, so shock it out or use a Fighter. Pilowswine,
however, is Ice/Ground, meaning that Fire-types can burn it out. Also,
try Surfing the Pilowswine for some good damage. Just one thing: Jasmine's
Pokemon were higher levels, so if you beat her, Pryce should be a cinch.
_________________________________________________________________________
After you get the badge and TM, skate down, left, and down again to get to
the exit of the Gym. One more badge to go, but it'll have to wait...
When you leave the Gym, Prof. Elm will call you. It seems Team Rocket
has taken over the Radio Tower in Goldenrod, and is broadcasting a pirate
signal. Elm wants you to clean the place out, and you better not
disappoint him!
GOLDENROD RADIO TOWER (Part 1)
Items: Underground Key
Pokemon: None
Trainers: 10 Grunts/Scientists and a Rocket Executive
You should have no problem getting to the top of the tower. Just keep
climbing stairs and beating Rockets. At the 5th floor is a particularly
easy Executive who's masquerading as the Director. Nuke him.
_________________________________________________________________________
Trainer: Rocket Executive
Pokemon: L30 Koffing x5, L32 Weezing
Reward: $2100, Underground Key
Strategy:
Any Psychic worth its salt should be able to sweep this guy out. 5
Koffings? I like Koffing myself, but not THAT much! Come on!
_________________________________________________________________________
Take the key he gives you, heal at the Pokemon Center, then go to the
top entrance leading to the Underground. Go down to the Underground, and
head right. You'll see a locked door: Use the Key and save your game.
Why? The Rival, fresh off having his butt kicked by Lance, wants to tango.
_________________________________________________________________________
Trainer: Rival
Pokemon: L30 Golbat, L28 Magnemite, L30 Haunter, L32 Sneasel, L32 starter
(still 2nd form)
Reward: $1920
Strategy:
The four returnees should be dealt with in a fashion similar to before
(Psychic-types for Golbat and Haunter, a Ground for Magnemite, and
whatever beats the starter). Sneasel is a Dark/Ice Pokemon, meaning that
it is 4x weak to all things Fighting. Karate Chop from a Machoke or
Machamp will destroy this thing.
_________________________________________________________________________
ROCKETS UNDERGROUND
Items: Full Heal, Smoke Ball, Max Ether, Amulet Coin, TM 35 (Sleep Talk),
Card Key
Pokemon: None
Trainers: 2 Burgulars, as well as 6 Rocket Grunts
The first part can be annoying, as you get to play a switch game. Beat
the Rockets, then flip the switches in 3-2-1 order. This will open the
path to the next room. Flipping in any other combination will open the
path to items and a couple of Fire-happy trainers who drops loads of $$$.
The next room is a straight-forward path, with one special feature: The
stairs in the upper-right corner. They lead to the Amulet Coin, which
doubles the amount of money earned in a fight. At the end of the path is
another Rocket... should I do a strategy? Nah, he's got 2 L25 Koffings
and is EASY. Beat him and talk to the real Director. He'll give you a
Card Key and send you back to the Tower. Heal before you go.
GOLDENROD RADIO TOWER (Part 2)
Items: Clear Bell, Pink Bow, TM 11 (Sunny Day)
Pokemon: None
Trainers: 5, including two Rocket Executives in a row
Go back to the 3rd floor of the Radio Tower. Remember those shutters
that blocked your path before? Now that you've got the Card Key, you can
unlock the way to the Rockets running the show. Take care: On the 4th floor,
there's a trainer with a L36 Golbat!
Finally, on the 5th floor, you get those damn Executives. Back to back,
but you can heal before the second fight.
_________________________________________________________________________
Trainer: Rocket Executive (Female)
Pokemon: L32 Arbok, L32 Vileplume, L32 Murkrow
Reward: $2304
Strategy:
Again, a Psychic Pokemon packing a Thunder or Ice Punch will sweep her
out. Or, a Fire for Vileplume, a Ground for Arbok, and a Rock for Murkrow.
_________________________________________________________________________
_________________________________________________________________________
Trainer: Rocket Executive (Male)
Pokemon: L33 Houndour, L33 Koffing, L35 Houndoom
Reward: $2520, Clear Bell
Strategy:
As long as I write, I'll never understand why Team Rocket is so in love
with the Poison types, especially Koffing. Anyway, use Psychic or Ground
on it. Houndour and Houndoom are dual-typed Dark and Fire, so use Water,
Ground, Rock, or Fighting moves to smash them up.
_________________________________________________________________________
Looks like Team Rocket's disbanding again, or so the male Executive claims
after you wipe him out. (Of course, Team Rocket will be in Pokemon Advance,
but that's our little secret). The Director returns to his chair, and gives
you the Clear Bell, the item needed to see Suicune. (See Catching the
Legends for more info). Also, Mary, the host of Pokemon Talk, is on the
4th floor, and has a Pink Bow for you. Finally, a girl on the 3rd floor
will fork over the TM for Sunny Day. Get out, and head back to Mahogany
Town, then east to Route 44.
ROUTE 44
Items: Burnt Berry, Max Repel, Max Revive, Ultra Ball
Pokemon: Bellsprout (MAE), Weepinbell (MAE), Tangela (MAE), Lickitung (MA),
Poliwag (E), Poliwhirl (E)
Trainers: 8, with Fishers and Cooltrainers headlining
"How do I get to the grass?" you ask? Well, Surf up to it from the edge
of the trees about half-way up.
This is a prime level-up route, and the trainers are a little easier
than the ones you saw in Goldenrod. Beat them around for experience.
The Pokemon are decent, but Tangela has this annoying tendency to run
away... you might want to throw Fast Balls at it.
At the end of the path lies the frozen tundra of the Ice Cave. Did you
bring a parka?
ICE CAVE
Items: HM 07 (Waterfall), Max Potion, Full Heal, Nevermelt Ice, TM 44
(Rest), Iron, Protein, PP Up
Pokemon: Zubat (MAE), Golbat (MAE), Jynx (MA), Swinub (MA), Sneasel (E),
Delibird (E), Krabby (Rock Smash, MAE), Shuckle (Rock Smash, MA)
Trainers: Thankfully, none
This place is beautiful, yet oh-so-annoying. And it was hard enough in
Gold/Silver. Oh well, neither rain nor sleet nor difficulty of puzzle shall
keep me from my appointed task. Just one piece of advice: BRING A POKEMON
WITH STRENGTH.
The majority of the 1st floor is walking between icy paths. The first one
is easy:
-Go right
-Down
-Right
-Down
-Right
and you'll be okay. Then go up and left, then down the ladder. The second
path is a real pain, however:
-Go up
-Left
-Down
-Left
-Up
-Right
-Down
-Left
-Up
-Left
-Down
-Right
-Down
-Right
and you'll be out. Confusing as heck. Next objective is snagging the
Waterfall HM, which is at the end of the next path. This one's harder,
but here we go:
-Right
-Up
-Left
-Down
-Right to the HM, then:
-Left
-Up
-Right
-Down
-Right
-Up
-Right
-Down
-Left
-Down
-Left
and you'll make it out. Don't worry, the rest of this place isn't as hard.
Go up and right, then down the ladder.
Next, you've got to move rocks into holes (see why you bring Strength?).
The first rock we're moving is the bottom rock in the set of two. Move
it 1 space right, 3 down, move around to the rock's right, 5 left, swing
around so you're above the rock, 1 down, 1 right and it'll fall.
Next, move the rock that was above it. Move it 2 left, 3 up, then get above
it and go 1 down, 1 left, and one down. Down to the 2nd basement it goes...
Now, go around to the middle-right portion of the floor. Move that rock
1 right, 5 down, go to the right of it and push it until it's against the
wall, 1 down, and three left into its hole.
Finally, the final rock. Push it two up, 1 left, 3 up, two right, 1 up,
and around and one left to the hole. From there, go down the ladder in
the upper-right corner.
When you go down, you'll see that the 2nd basement is one giant sheet of
ice. Damn. But you moved those rocks for a reason, right? Go left to the
Max Potion, down, right, up, left, down, right, up, and right to the
Full Heal and the next ladder.
The third basement is short, and sweet. Either break the rock with Rock
Smash or swing around to the ladder, then climb down the other ladder
and grab the Nevermelt Ice. From there, go down the ladder on the right
side.
More ice skating... On the second floor, go around until you're just below
the stairs. Jump down and slide right to the TM for Rest, then left and up
to the snow. Swing around again, but go up the stairs and slide down to
the ladder.
You're almost home. Go right and down the steps, then left, down, left,
and down to the Iron. Then, go right, up, right, up, right, up, right,
down, left, up, right, up, and left. Then, head to the ladder.
Finally, the end of the path. Go up to the Protein, then slide down the
left wall to the PP Up. From there, slide up, then go one space left of
the ladder and walk down to the end of the cave and Blackthorn City.
BLACKTHORN CITY
Items: Spell Tag (Saturday)
Pokemon: Dodrio (trade FEMALE Dragonair), Dratini (gift Pokemon)
Trainers: 5 Cooltrainers and the Leader in the Gym
First stop after the Pokemon Center is the Poke Mart, home to the first
buyable Ultra Balls and Max Potions. Pick these up if you're going
Suicune hunting. Another important (?) stop is the Move Deleter next door.
He'll make your Pokemon forget one move. It's designed to let you delete
HM moves off your Pokemon, or new moves for Pokemon that you want to
send through the Time Capsule.
Just south of the Blackthorn Gym is a trainer looking for a female
Dragonair. If you've got one, you'll get a Dodrio in exchange. Fair
trade, I'd say.
But the real heart of Blackthorn City is the Blackthorn Gym. Bring a
Pokemon with Strength, and a really powerful Water Pokemon with Icy Wind,
Ice Punch, or (best one), Ice Beam. Lapras at L38 is a huge help, as is
an Ice Punching Jynx from the Ice Cave. Get the theme? Dragon has one
weakness that's easily exploited: Ice.
In the gym itself, beat the first trainer, then take the stairs up. You'll
have to move rocks to create a path to Clair. There's three sets of rocks:
upper-left, upper-right, and bottom. In the upper-left set, push the right
rock up 2, then the left one into the hole. In the bottom set, move the
right rock down 3, then the left one up until it's parallel with the
hole. Then, move it into position. In the upper-right, move the first rock
right three, then the rock near the hole down.
From there, it's two trainers and the Leader, Clair.
_________________________________________________________________________
Trainer: Leader Clair
Pokemon: L37 Dragonair x3, L40 Kingdra
Reward: $4000
Strategy:
Basically, use Ice moves on the Dragonair. Watch for one of the Dragonairs
using Thunderbolt, the rest is easy. As for Kingdra... well, it's a pain.
Dragon is its only weakness, but there's no real way to exploit it unless
you want your butt kicked. Instead, use Confuse Ray from Lapras to mess
it up, then Ice Beam and Body Slam to cause damage. Eventually, Kingdra
will go down.
_________________________________________________________________________
Guess what? Clair isn't impressed with your skills (though beating Kingdra
is quite an accomplishment). She wants you to go into the Dragon's Den
and take the Dragon Master test. But to take it, you'll need something with
Surf, and Whirlpool. If you've got the Red Gyarados, bring it along with
those two moves. Also, leave a slot open for a gift Pokemon.
DRAGON'S DEN
Items: Calcium, Max Elixir, Dragon Fang, Rising Badge, TM 24 (Dragonbreath)
Pokemon: Dratini (surf, or in the Dragon Shrine), Magikarp
Trainers: 5 Cooltrainers (oops...)
The Calcium is to the extreme right of the entrance. From the entrance,
Surf left and down to the Max Elixir. Then, use Whirlpool to take out the
swirling mass. Keep surfing down, then to the right, and enter the shrine.
In the shrine, the Dragon Master will ask you five questions. Answer
them and you'll receive a Dratini with Twister. If you get the five
questions answered correctly, you'll get a Dratini with Twister... and
Extremespeed.
The five questions and the answers you should avoid are:
1) What are your Pokemon to you?
Don't choose: Underling
2) What helps you to win battles?
Don't choose: Cheating
3) What kind of trainers do you wish to battle?
Don't choose: Weak people
4) What is most important for raising Pokemon?
Don't choose: Violence
5) Strong Pokemon. Weak Pokemon. Which is more important?
Don't choose: Strong or Weak
Once you answer the questions, Clair will enter and wonder how you did.
When the sage tells her that you passed, she'll hand over the Risingbadge.
Leave, and Clair will give you the Dragonbreath TM. Go back in the
shrine and talk to the Dragon Sage to receive your Dratini. Does it have
Extremespeed?
Now, Surf right and pick up the Dragon Fang, then leave the cave. The
next stop is Route 45.
ROUTE 45
Items: Elixir, Max Potion, Nugget, Revive, Mysteryberry
Pokemon: Geodude (MAE), Graveler (MAE), Gligar (MAE), Phanpy (M), Donphan
(MA), Skarmory (MA)
Trainers: 7, ranging from Hikers to Picknickers
A lot of this route is one-way, so be careful where you step. Grab the
Pokemon (Skarmory is a good Pokemon for link-battling), and hop down.
At the bottom of the hill is Route 46.
ROUTE 46
Items: Berry, PRZCure Berry, X Speed
Pokemon: Pokemon: Spearow (MA), Rattata (MAE), Geodude (MAE), Phanpy (M)
Trainers: 3 easy ones
Keep hopping down, and eventually you'll come out in the area where you
caught that Geodude. You're almost home... head back to New Bark Town.
NEW BARK TOWN (Part 3)
Items: Master Ball
Pokemon: None
Trainers: None
Go to Elm's lab and he'll give you the Master Ball! *kaching* This sucker
catches any Pokemon without fail, and should be saved for the L70 Lugia
or L60 Ho-oh you'll encounter later.
At this point, the next thing you HAVE to do is surf east into Kanto and
fight the Elite 4. However, there are a couple of side items I'd like to
put here: Mt. Mortar and the Dark Cave.
Mt. Mortar requirements:
-A Pokemon with Surf and Waterfall
-One Escape Rope
-A decent levelled Psychic or Flying Pokemon
-One empty spot in your team (enter with 5 Pokemon)
To enter the Mountain, take the middle entrance on Route 42.
MT. MORTAR
Items: Rare Candy, Max Potion, TM 40 (Defense Curl), Escape Rope, Dragon
Scale, Elixir, Max Revive
Pokemon: Geodude (MAE), Graveler (MAE), Rattata (MAE), Raticate (MAE), Zubat
(MAE), Golbat (MAE), Machop (MA), Machoke (MA), Marril (E), Goldeen (MAE),
Seaking (MAE), Tyrogue (beat Karate Kiyo)
Trainers: 2
Surf off the ledge and around the platform, then use Waterfall to get up to
the second floor. (You couldn't use Waterfall before this point, or I'd
have taken you in here after you got to Blackthorne). Surf around another
platform and enter the cave door.
This next room is a pain, but the items are worth it. Go left and Surf the
little pond to get a Rare Candy, then go back to the start. Go right, and
Surf through two ponds to get the Max Potion. From the item, go up, Surf
another pond, and go past where the item was. Jump down and head left. When
you come to another pond, Surf it and head right. Jump down the first fence
and collect TM 40 (Defense Curl), then return to the fence just above the
TM. Keep going right, and Surf up. This will take you to an Escape Rope. Get
it, and go right to another Surf pond. Go around the rocks and hop two
fences to collect the Dragon Scale, which evolves Seadra to Kingdra after
trading. Go left and pick up the Elixir, and retrace your steps to the
point where you took the two jumps. This time, go left, take one last leap,
and left to a ladder. Whew....
When you come out, go right, then up and around. Take the stairs down to
a Max Revive, then go back up and head left. When you come to the wall,
head down and take the ladder. When you land, go right to meet Karate Kiyo.
_________________________________________________________________________
Trainer: Karate Kiyo
Pokemon: L34 Hitmonlee, L34 Hitmonchan
Reward: $816, Tyrogue
Strategy:
Any decent Flying or Psychic type should be able to beat this one pretty
handily.
_________________________________________________________________________
After he loses, Kiyo rewards you with Tyrogue. This Pokemon is a baby
Hitmonlee... and Hitmonchan... and Hitmontop. Yeah, it evolves three
different ways. It's all dependant on its stats at L20, when it evolves.
Attack > Defense = Hitmonlee
Attack < Defense = Hitmonchan
Attack = Defense = Hitmontop
Take the Pokemon and use the Escape Rope to fly away.
DARK CAVE
Requirements: Surf, Flash, Rock Smash
Items: Revive, TM 13 (Snore), Blackglasses, Hyper Potion, Full Heal, Dire
Hit
Pokemon: (Blackthorn side) Geodude (MAE), Graveler (MAE), Zubat (MAE),
Golbat (MAE), Teddiursa (M), Ursaring (MA), Wobbuffet (E)
(Violet side) Geodude (MAE), Zubat (MAE), Dunsparce (MAE), Teddiursa (M)
The best entrance to take is the one just south of Blackthorn City. When
you enter, Flash the cave. Then, Surf down until you find a platform with
a Revive on it. Go left and up from there to find the second Snore TM,
but don't jump the platform. Instead, go to about dead-center of the area
and land. Go up, take the stairs, and head left. Go down and around to find
a man wearing "sun" glasses. Actually, they're Blackglasses, which increase
the damage done by Dark-element moves.
Go down from him to come out on a platform. Surf down and use Rock Smash
to take out a rock. From there, go up and around the outcropping. Grab the
items, and hop down ledges. You'll appear on Route 46.
TOHJO FALLS/ROUTE 26
Requirements: Surf, Whirlpool, Waterfall
Items: Rare Candy, Moon Stone, TM 37 (Sandstorm), TM 22 (Solarbeam)
Pokemon:
Tojho Falls- Zubat, Golbat, Rattata, Raticate, Slowpoke, Goldeen, Seaking
(all MAE)
Route 26- Raticate (MAE), Arbok (MA), Sandslash (MA), Doduo (MA), Ponyta
(MA), Noctowl (E), Quagsire (E)
Trainers: 5 Cooltrainers/Fishers
Welcome to Kanto! The Rare Candy is a long Surf from the entrance to this
route: it's easy to access. However, you need to go into the cave, which
is the Tojho Falls. Pick up the Moon Stone, then Waterfall up to the top
of the area. Go down, and you'll pop out near a house (and a trainer).
In the house is a lady who'll rate the happiness of your Pokemon. If it's
good, you'll get TM 37 (Sandstorm), which causes damage to anything not
Steel, Rock, or Ground. And it lasts 5 turns.
You'll have to Surf right and beat some trainers around, then the landform
below will stop. That's your cue to Surf down and go right until you
see a Whirlpool. Destroy it, then Surf left. You'll see TM 22 (Solarbeam),
being guarded by a Farfetch'd trainer.
Pretty soon, you'll come to...
ROUTE 27
Items: Ice Berry, Max Elixir
Pokemon: Same as on 26, except for Sandslash
Trainers: 5 more Cooltrainers
On this route, the only way to go is straight up. On the way, you'll see
a house: Stop in and the lady inside will heal all your Pokemon. Keep going
up, pick up the Max Elixir, then you'll come to the Pokemon League's
Reception Gate. Since you have all 8 Johto Badges, you can pass through
to...
VICTORY ROAD
Items: Max Revive, Full Heal, HP Up, Full Restore, TM 26 (Earthquake)
Pokemon: Graveler (MAE), Golbat (MAE), Onix (MAE), Sandslash (MA), Rhyhorn
(MA), Rhydon (MA)
Trainers: The Rival
Remember how annoying this place was in Red/Blue/Yellow? Well, it's a
little quieter, now that the Moltres and trainers have left.
Go up from the start, then turn right and head down. You'll be near the
first two items. Double back to the middle of the platform, then head left
and down the stairs. Go up from there to a ladder.
On the second floor, go down, then up the stairs and right. Head down and
go around to the HP Up, then reverse direction and head around to the
ladder. Go up and take it! Almost to Indigo Plateau!
To get to the Full Restore, go up to the platform, then all of the way to
the left, down, and right to another ladder. Go down and grab it, then
return to the 3rd floor. This time, go around to the platform, and go
all the way left. Drop down the hole and TM 26 (Earthquake) will be in your
sights! Use this TM carefully: It's one of the best moves in the game, and
there's no way to get more! (LEGALLY...) Don't give it to Graveler/Golem:
He's gonna learn it soon.
Return to the third floor, and this time head up toward the exit. But not
so fast... the Rival wants a piece of you. He's got a full squad at the
ready, and the loser goes home. Ready?
_________________________________________________________________________
Trainer: Rival
Pokemon: L34 Sneasel, L34 Magneton, L35 Haunter, L35 Kadabra, L36
Golbat, L38 starter (final form)
Reward: $4560
Strategy:
Sneasel's down in a Karate Chop or Cross Chop from a high-leveled Fighter.
Magneton's toast from Earthquake, as is Haunter. Kadabra should be handled
by something with high levels and a powerful Dark, Bug, or Ghost move.
Golbat can go down to any Electric, Ice, Rock, or Psychic move, and use
your best counter-type on the starter.
_________________________________________________________________________
After the Rival leaves, the path is clear to Indigo Plateau.
INDIGO PLATEAU
Items: None
Pokemon: None
Trainers: The Elite 4 and the Pokemon League Champion. 'Nuff said.
If you need to train anything else, the man with the Abra will teleport you
home, no charge. There's great items in the Poke Mart (Full Restores top
the list), and a Pokemon Center. That's it. Because this is the Elite 4,
when your abilities as a trainer will be tested.
<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<SPOTLIGHT: PREPERATION FOR THE ELITE>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
Even though it's only the half-point of the game, a lot of prepwork is
called for here. You'll need to have a lot of Full Restores, Max Potions,
Full Heals (especially after Koga), and Revives. As for the party, you'll
want several good ones.
A very good thing to have is a great Fire Pokemon. It'll be in almost any
fight. My choice was a Magmar I acquired in a trade. Magmar's got the ultra-
powerful Flamethrower, and learns it early (L41).
Also, a powerful Water(/Ice) Pokemon. I went with a Kingdra for this, as
it has almost no weaknesses at all. Surf, Ice Beam (RBY TM, I traded it
before evolving to Kingdra) and Dragonbreath are powerful moves to have.
A good Ground/Rock Pokemon is a boost to any team, and Golem does that in
spades. Earthquake (L41), Rollout (though I had the luxury of Rock Slide),
and Return all did well.
Also, a decent Psychic. The Alakazam I raised certainly did that part well.
It had Psychic of course, plus Recover, Reflect, and Fire Punch from a TM...
a world-class moveset.
I added two more Pokemon to the squad: My shiny Electabuzz with
Thunderpunch, Ice Punch, and Thunder Wave (RBY TM). And, a Machamp with
Cross Chop, Earthquake, Rock Slide, and Return.
The team I took into the Elite 4 (all at L45), and the team I'll use in the
descriptions:
Magmar: Flamethrower, Thunderpunch, Body Slam, Smokescreen *Magnet*
Kingdra: Surf, Return, Ice Beam, Dragonbreath *Nevermelt Ice*
Golem: Earthquake, Rock Slide, Return, filler move (I put Fire Punch on,
but that'll be Explosion eventually) *Quick Claw*
Alakazam: Psychic, Recover, Reflect, Fire Punch *Charcoal*
Electabuzz: Thunder Wave, Thunderpunch, Ice Punch, Headbutt *Pink Bow*
Machamp: Cross Chop, Earthquake, Rock Slide, Return *Soft Sand*
I wouldn't take this into a L100 battle (too many type-boosting items), but
for what it's designed, it's excellent.
<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
Here we go!
_________________________________________________________________________
Trainer: Elite 4 Will
Pokemon: L40 Xatu, L41 Slowbro, L41 Exeggutor, L41 Jynx, L42 Xatu
Reward: $4200
Strategy:
Later on, you'll be able to take a Dark attacker like Houndoom and sweep
with it. Unfortunately, Dark attackers aren't in Johto (Umbreon just
doesn't have the Special Attack). Instead, use Electabuzz on the Xatu and
Slowbro (Thunderpunch apiece), and Magmar on Jynx and Exeggutor (one
Flamethrower per). Just watch for the Psychic that every one of these will
launch.
_________________________________________________________________________
_________________________________________________________________________
Trainer: Elite 4 Koga
Pokemon: L40 Ariados, L41 Venomoth, L42 Muk, L43 Forretress, L44 Crobat
Reward: $4400
Strategy:
There's a lot of Bugs and Poisons on this team. Use Golem as your lead
and Rock Slide Ariados/Venomoth, while Earthquaking Muk. Magmar's
Flamethrower will destroy the Bug/Steel Forretress, and Alakazam's speed
will allow it to quickly faint Crobat.
_________________________________________________________________________
_________________________________________________________________________
Trainer: Elite 4 Bruno
Pokemon: L42 Hitmontop, L42 Hitmonlee, L42 Hitmonchan, L43 Onix, L46
Machamp
Reward: $4600
Strategy:
Alakazam and Psychic get plenty of work here. Use it on all of the Fighters,
and they'll drop. Hitmonchan MIGHT be able to damage it with Mach Punch,
but that's about it. As for Onix, one Surf from Kingdra will end his day.
_________________________________________________________________________
_________________________________________________________________________
Trainer: Elite 4 Karen
Pokemon: L42 Umbreon, L42 Vileplume, L44 Murkrow, L45 Gengar, L47 Houndoom
Reward: $4700
Strategy:
It's time for a crash course in Dark-killing... Lead with Machamp and Cross
Chop Umbreon down. He can do the same to Houndoom. Magmar should burn out
Vileplume, and Electabuzz's Thunderpunch should beat Murkrow. Gengar is
a pain... Machamp/Golem's Earthquake or Alakazam's Psychic should eliminate
it.
_________________________________________________________________________
_________________________________________________________________________
Trainer: Champion Lance
Pokemon: L44 Gyarados, L46 Charizard, L46 Aerodactyl, L47 Dragonite x2,
L50 Dragonite
Reward: $5000, end credits
Strategy:
This is it... one more win and it's all over. Lead with Electabuzz and shock
Gyarados out of the sky with Thunderpunch. Charizard will probably go down
to a Rock Slide(/Throw) from Golem. Aerodactyl's dead to a Surf from
Kingdra (but beware the evil GameSharked Aerodactyl... how else does it
learn Rock Slide?). Finally, all of the Dragonite will bow to Ice Beam.
Edit: Seems I said they were Dragonairs... thanks to Mariano for picking
that up.
_________________________________________________________________________
It's over! You are the Pokemon League Champion, and the Pokemon that you
used are in the Hall of Fame. You get the end credits, and the game is over.
Or is it?
S.S. AQUA
Items: S.S. Ticket, Metal Coat
Pokemon: None
Trainers: 9, various types
After the end credits roll, you'll be back in New Bark Town. Prof. Elm will
call and ask you to come to his lab. Do so, and he'll give you the S.S.
Ticket, good for unlimited passage on the S.S. Aqua steamer. Guess what,
everyone? We're headed to Kanto.
The ship itself is in Olivine City. Go there, and head to the southern
part of the town. The port is right there. Go down, and board the ship.
And a nice looking ship it is... heck, the Ticket is for a private state
room with bed (heals your party) and a PC so you can switch Pokemon.
Some trainers even use the Aqua to train Pokemon that they'll use in
Kanto. I stick with what I used to whip the Elite, but that's just me.
When you actually board the vessel, an eldery man will almost run you
over, looking for his granddaughter. Agree to help, then start looking
for fights. They're in every room except yours (the one with the Sailor
beside it), the room next door (but wait), and the bottom-right (the
granddad's).
Once you get them beaten, go down the stairs in the lower-right. Another
Sailor will stop you. His buddy's slacking off somewhere, and the Sailor
won't move until his buddy comes back. The buddy himself is in the room
next to yours, and he'll challenge you to a match. With L31 Machop, L26
Psyduck, and L33 Machoke on his team, he's easy. Beat him and the whole
downstairs will open up.
The downstairs has three more trainers, so beat them and go to an upstair
on the left side. Go up and into the room to find a little girl... the
Gentlemen's granddaughter! Just let her play with you, and a grateful
Grandpa will fork over the Metal Coat. This item:
1) Ups the damage for Steel-element moves (all three of them)
2) If it is held by a Scyther or Onix that is being traded, it triggers
evolution
When you get the coat, the ship will have arrived in Kanto's Vermillion
City. Welcome back, veterans.
VERMILION CITY
Items: Rare Candy, HP Up (requires 16 badges), Thunderbadge
Pokemon: None
Trainers: 3 and a Leader in Vermillion Gym
Vermilion City... a place I remember fondly from my RBY misadventures.
Heal at the Pokemon Center if you need to, then head to the Pokemon Fan
Club north of the gym. Listen to the president blather on about Pokemon
and you'll get a Rare Candy.
Normally, I'd say "Go east and you'll find the Diglett's Cave". One little
problem: Snorlax. He's gotten BIGGER (if humanly possible) in the past
three years, and now takes up the entire area that Route 11 and Vermillion
share. The man beside him will give you a HP Up when you beat the 8 Kanto
Gym leaders, so let's start with the resident shock therapist: Lt. Surge.
Getting to his gym is easy: Just Surf around the bush or the sign.
His traps are deactivated due to a power outage, so just beat his three
Electric-using disciples and fight Surge.
_________________________________________________________________________
Trainer: Leader Lt. Surge
Pokemon: L44 Raichu, L40 Magneton, L40 Electrode x2, L46 Electabuzz
Reward: $4600, Thunderbadge
Strategy:
5 Electric Pokemon = 1 Ground sweep. Earthquaking Pokemon will have a
field day here. Golem especially, as he's resistant or immune to all of
their attacks.
_________________________________________________________________________
Pick up the badge, heal at the Center, and move north to Route 6.
ROUTE 6
Items: None
Pokemon: Raticate (MAE), Jigglypuff (MAE), Magnemite (MAE), Rattata (MA),
Snubbull (MA), Granbull (MA), Drowzee (E), Meowth (E), Psyduck (MAE surfing,
E in the grass), Golduck (MAE surfing)
Trainers: 2 Pokefans, each with 1 L35 Pokemon
Beat the trainers, catch anything that you haven't already... sound
familiar? Granbull's a nice catch for those who don't want to take Snubbull
through the Elite 4 to get it level-ups. Since the Underground Path is
offline temporarily, go north into Saffron City.
SAFFRON CITY
Items: TM 29 (Psychic), Upgrade, Focus Band, Marshbadge
Pokemon: None
Trainers: 4 + Leader in Saffron Gym
Start by going to the first house you can enter on the bottom row. The
man inside will hand over TM 29 (Psychic), a powerful move. Next, go to
Silph Co (you can't miss it: It's the giant building in the center of
town). You can't go any higher than the first floor, but the security
guard will give you the Upgrade. This little item will evolve Porygon
if you trade the Pokemon with the Upgrade hooked up.
Next, go to the Gyms in the upper-right corner. The smaller gym is the
Fighting Dojo, which has one person in it. Obviously, not the badge
gym. Take the Focus Band and head out. The one on the right is Sabrina's
Psychic Gym. To navigate the teleporters, always take the one ABOVE you.
If you're on a top one, take the one below you. Eventually, you'll come
across...
_________________________________________________________________________
Trainer: Leader Sabrina
Pokemon: L46 Espeon, L46 Mr. Mime, L48 Alakazam
Reward: $4800, Marshbadge
Strategy:
If you've got a good Dark or Ghost Pokemon, or Pokemon with powerful moves
of those elements, make them your horse. Failing that (pretty likely
considering there aren't many Dark-types you've had the opportunity to
stumble across), use a Pokemon with high Attack stats and good Special
Defense. Kingdra, your starter, Lapras... all would work well.
_________________________________________________________________________
After Sabrina forks over the Badge, leave the gym and go north to Route 5.
ROUTE 5
Items: Cleanse Tag
Pokemon: Abra (MAE), Jigglypuff (MAE), Pidgey (MA), Pidgeotto (MA),
Snubbull (MA), Hoothoot (E), Noctowl (E), Meowth (E)
Trainers: None
To get to the grass area and item, walk up to almost Cerulean City, then
hop ledges going down. Though by now, you should really have everything
here in terms of Pokemon.
If you go into the house, the old lady will give you the Cleanse Tag,
which lowers the Pokemon encounter rate when attached to one of your
Pokemon. Rather useless, don't you think? Leave and go north to Cerulean
City.
CERULEAN CITY (Part 1)
Items: None
Pokemon: None
Trainers: None
Nothing here of note. Just grab a Pokemon with Cut, and another one with
Thief, and go to Route 9.
ROUTE 9
Items: Thick Club (VERY RARE)
Pokemon: Rattata (MAE), Raticate (MAE), Spearow (MA), Fearow (MA), Marowak
(MA), Zubat (E), Venonat (E), Venomoth (E)
Trainers: 6, split between Hikers, Campers, and Picknickers
You'll need Cut to get in to the route, but why Thief? Simple: The Thick
Club. Strip the Pokemon that has Thief of any items they might be holding,
then go into battle against Marowak and use Thief. Constantly. If you get
lucky, you'll get the Thick Club item. Now, if you catch Cubone or Marowak,
and they hold the Thick Club, their Attack rating will DOUBLE. Times 2.
With a 258 Attack rating at maximum, the Club could put it at 516... 150
points better at max than Dragonite and Tyranitar!
Well... Go right, harass the trainers, and you'll come eventually to a
Pokemon Center. That Center is actually on Route 10.
ROUTE 10
Items: None
Pokemon: Same as on Route 9, but add Electabuzz and Voltorb (both MAE)
Trainers: None
Surf down the coast beside the Pokemon Center, and you'll come to a
building with grass in front of it. The grass is home to new Pokemon,
and the building is the Power Plant. No Zapdos this time: It's inhabited.
There's a Generator inside this joint, and it provides power to all of
Kanto. Well, it would, but a part's been stolen (as the manager explains
so eloquently when you speak to him). Go back to Cerulean City.
POWER RESTORATION AND THE TRAIN
Items: Machine Part, TM 07 (Zap Cannon), Poke Doll, Pass
Pokemon: None
Trainers: 1 Rocket Grunt
When you go back to Cerulean, go to the Gym. A person dressed like a Rocket
will intercept you, run on at the mouth, and take off. He says something
about a Machine Part that he stashed. Follow him up to the bridge leading
to Route 24, where you have to fight him. But with just a Golbat, he's DOA.
The Rocket will give you the location of the part he stashed, then take
off for parts unknown. To find the part, go to the square of water in the
gym. In its upper-left corner, facing toward the door, is the Machine Part.
Leave the Gym, and return to the Power Plant. Inside, give the Manager
the part, and he'll give you the useless TM 07 (Zap Cannon) in exchange.
Now, go back to Saffron and go to the left side of town. One of the houses
near Silph Co. is the home of the Copycat Girl. She's missing her favorite
Poke Doll given to her by a certain someone. To find it, go to the
Vermillion Fan Club and talk to the chubby guy. He'll give you the Doll.
Give the Doll to Copycat, and you'll receive a Pass, good for unlimited
use of the Magnet Train to Goldenrod City. *schwing* Now, you can pass
between Johto and Kanto without having to go through Victory Road.
Now, you ought to renew the Badge hunt. The Cerulean Gym is empty, and
why? Misty's on a date... go to Route 24.
ROUTE 24
Items: None
Pokemon: Bellsprout (MAE), Abra (MAE), Caterpie (MA), Metapod (MA),
Butterfree (MA), Sunkern (A), Oddish (E), Gloom (E), Venonat (E)
Trainers: None
Just go up and come out on Route 24.
ROUTE 25
Items: Nugget, Protein (needs Cut), Everstone, Leaf Stone, Water Stone,
Fire Stone, Thunderstone
Pokemon: Bellsprout (MAE), Pidgey (MA), Pidgeotto (MA), Caterpie (MA),
Metapod (MA), Butterfree (MA), Hoothoot (E), Noctowl (E), Oddish (E),
Venonat (E)
Trainers: 8, and you HAVE to fight seven of them
Back in the old days of RBY, Team Rocket had a little challenge going
on here. It's still there 3 years later, but with a legimate owner and
some tough Pokemon. Beat the first six trainers, toast the Porygon-packing
Super Nerd who tries to intercept, then talk to the Cooltrainer at the end
to get a Nugget... and one more match. *sigh*
After that riff-raff is taken care of, go right to see Misty on a date. The
guy runs off (chicken...), and Misty insults you before spotting your
Johto badges. She'll return to the Gym afterwards. Follow her, unless you
happen to have Lickitung, Oddish, Staryu, Growlithe, and Chibirat (Pichu)
with you.
SIDE QUEST: BILL'S GRANDAD
Bill's grandfather is house-sitting for his grandson, and wants to see some
rare Pokemon. Each Pokemon has its own reward.
"The one with the long tongue". Well, who else could this be? It's a
Lickitung. Reward: Everstone
"The one with leaves growing out of its head". Oddish fits this description
to a T. Reward: Leaf Stone
"The one shaped like a star". Think about it... it's a Staryu. Reward:
Water Stone
"The one with snapping jaws". Obviously, a puppy of some sort... Growlithe.
Reward: Fire Stone
"The really popular one, before it evolves". This is hard to get, but the
answer is Pichu. Reward: Thunderstone
Now, head back to Cerulean City.
CERULEAN CITY (Part 3)
Items: Cascadebadge, Beserk Gene
Pokemon: None
Trainers: Misty, plus three Swimmers
Now that Misty's back in town, you'll be able to fight for a badge. Beat
the three Water-type trainers in her gym, then fight the female lead of
the crappiest anime on TV today...
_________________________________________________________________________
Trainer: Leader Misty
Pokemon: L42 Golduck, L42 Quagsire, L44 Lapras, L47 Starmie
Reward: $4700, Cascadebadge
Strategy:
Golduck will die to one Thunderbolt/punch from any high-leveled Electric,
but Quaggy's type (Water/Ground) prevents a similar shocking. Use a Grass
move, or powerful physical attacks to take it down. Use Electric moves
against the other two.
_________________________________________________________________________
Badge in hand, go back to Route 25 and Surf down until the rock wall
moves back two steps. Go to where the wall would begin, face left, and
press A to pick up the Beserk Gene item. Here's a quick map:
Route 24
| : |
| : | Cerulean City
| : |
| -- |
| : * |
| : |
| : | : = Rock Wall, | = Fence, * = Beserk Gene
The Gene is a one-shot item that is like using Swagger on yourself... your
Attack doubles, but you become confused. Save this for a link battle if
you want to use it. From Cerulean, go right to Route 10, then down to
the Rock Tunnel.
ROCK TUNNEL
Items: Iron, Revive, PP Up, TM 47 (Steel Wing), Elixir
Pokemon: Geodude (MAE), Zubat (MAE), Onix (MAE), Machop (MA), Machoke (MA),
Cubone (MA), Marowak (MA), Kangaskhan (MA), Haunter (E), Golbat (E)
Trainers: 2, a Hiker and a Pokefan
A basic cave, but you'll want Flash to get through it. From the start, go
right, down, and then right until you see a ladder. Take it and go down
to the basement.
If you go all the way to the right from the ladder, you'll get the Iron.
Then, double back and go up, right, and up again to the ladder up. From
THAT ladder, go down, then right and you'll appear in the basement again.
In the basement again, go up and grab the Revive, then pass through the
first two-rock gap. Go down to the PP Up, then double back and go through
the second one. Go up from there and you'll come out on the top floor.
Go left, pick up the TM 47 (Steel Wing) and Elixir, then leave the cave.
Fight the two trainers on the outside, then enter Lavender Town.
LAVENDER TOWN
Items: Expansion Card
Pokemon: None
Trainers: None
After healing up, your first stop should be the Radio Tower. It's the old
site of the Pokemon Tower. Talk to the director in the tower and you'll
get the Expansion Card. This Pokegear attachment will allow you to listen
to Kanto's various radio shows. That's all that's important, so move west
to Route 8.
ROUTE 8
Items: PRZCure Berry
Pokemon: Abra (MAE), Kadabra (MAE), Jigglypuff (MAE), Pidgeotto (MA),
Growlithe (MA), Snubbull (MA), Noctowl (E), Haunter (E), Meowth (E)
Trainers: 5, two Super Nerds and the Kanto Pokemon Federation (3 Bikers)
Catchers take note: You need Cut to get to the grass here. Still, it
might be worth a trip if only for the Kinesis Kadabra that can only be
caught here. Grab what you need, beat the Nerds around, show the KPF who
they're dealing with, then cross through Saffron to Route 7.
ROUTE 7
Items: None
Pokemon: Abra (MAE), Jigglypuff (MAE), Spearow (MA), Fearow (MA), Rattata
(MA), Raticate (MA), Snubbull (MA), Meowth (E), Persian (E), Murkrow
(E), Houndour (E)
Trainers: None
Stay up late one night, then bring some Ultra Balls here to catch rare
Pokemon. Houndour is a great Fire Pokemon (raise it up to about L35, and
it can sweep the Grass gym coming up), while Murkrow is a decent Flyer,
and Persian is obvious. Grab those ones and head into Celadon City,
also at night.
CELADON CITY
Items: TM 03 (Curse), Leftovers, PP Up, Rainbowbadge, TM 19 (Giga Drain)
Pokemon: Grimer, Muk (MAE, Surf in the pond next to the Casino)
Trainers: Erika, plus four minor trainers in the Gym
Start by going past up near the Pokemon Center, then left to the back
entrance of Celadon Mansion. Go up and listen to the "scary" story to
get TM 03 (Curse). It's a potent move in the hands of a slower Pokemon,
but keep your Ghost-types away from it.
Next, go down past the Casino to a restaurant. They won't feed you, but
you can search the trash can inside for some tasty Leftovers. This item
restores 1/16 of your health EVERY round. Sweetness. Leave the Restaurant
and go right, then up. Check the tree at the end of the path for a PP Up.
After all that is taken care of, go down from the Restaurant, and Cut
down the bush. Go left to see the Celadon Gym. Enter, and note the
different reactions depending on your gender. Beat the trainers around,
and prepare to take Erika on.
_________________________________________________________________________
Trainer: Leader Erika
Pokemon: L42 Tangela, L41 Jumpluff, L46 Victreebel, L46 Bellossom
Reward: $4600, Rainbowbadge, TM 19 (Giga Drain)
Strategy:
Any high-leveled Fire, Ice, or Flying Pokemon should take Erika down
without problems. You can also use Rock attacks on Jumpluff (but don't
use Rock POKEMON, as Solarbeam will probably waste you), and Psychic
moves on Victreebel.
_________________________________________________________________________
After the fight, Erika will fork over the Badge, and TM 19 (Giga Drain).
It's a decent-powered Grass move, but 5 PP is a HUGE problem. Heal up after
the fight, then move west (again...) to Route 16.
ROUTE 16
Items: None
Pokemon: Grimer (MAE), Muk (MAE), Fearow (MA), Slugma (A), Murkrow (E)
Trainers: None
You'll need Cut to get to the Pokemon, but don't worry about it. You
should already have Fearow and Murkrow, and the other three can be
caught easier soon. Bring a Bicycle, or you won't be able to go down
to Route 17.
ROUTE 17
Items: None
Pokemon: Grimer (MAE), Muk (MAE), Fearow (MA), Slugma (A)
Trainers: 4 Bikers
The route's downhill, so just kick back and enjoy the ride. Slugma's an
okay Fire Pokemon, and Muk is one of the best Poisons. Since Grimer evolves
into Muk... you do the math. Take out the Bikers, and be careful near the
bottom of the hill... unlike in RBY, the hill effects stays at the bottom.
At the bottom is Route 18.
ROUTE 18
Items: None
Pokemon: Same as on Route 17
Trainers: 2 Bird Keepers
A short route... beat the Bird Keepers and enter Fuschia City.
FUSCHIA CITY
Items: Burnt Berry, Soulbadge, TM 06 (Toxic)
Pokemon: None
Trainers: 5 and Leader Janine (obviously, in the Gym)
Just for the record, the Safari Zone is CLOSED in Crystal, so don't go
looking for it. Heal up at the Pokemon Center, then go to the Gym. It's
a straightforward path through the maze, but don't get fooled by all of
the minor trainers looking like the leader. Janine herself (Koga's
daughter, FYI) is in the middle-left portion of the Gym itself.
_________________________________________________________________________
Trainer: Leader Janine
Pokemon: L36 Crobat, L33 Ariados, L36 Weezing x2, L39 Venomoth
Reward: $3900, Soulbadge, TM 06 (Toxic)
Strategy:
Koga's daughter fights a lot like dear old Dad... that is, a lot of Poison.
Thus, any good Psychic Pokemon, or Ground-type with Rock moves will fare
well here. Also, since she's packing two Bugs, you might want to bring
a Fire Pokemon along.
_________________________________________________________________________
When Janine goes down at last, you'll get your 13th badge and TM 06 (Toxic).
Toxic inflicts a poison that doubles in damage every turn, but that effect
goes away on a switch. Heal up, then head to Silence Bridge, aka Routes
12-15.
SILENCE BRIDGE AREA
Items: PP Up, Nugget, Calcium, Super Rod
Pokemon: Chansey (MAE), Nidorina (MA), Nidorino (MA), Pidgeotto (MA),
Hoppip (MA), Skiploom (A*), Noctowl (E), Quagsire (E), Venonat (E),
Venomoth (E), Aerodactyl (Route 14, trade Chansey) *Route 14 only
Trainers: 18 of them... be prepared for a lot
This is the only place in the game to catch Chansey. And if it's possible,
she's harder to find than in Gold and Silver. But Chansey's cool for three
reasons:
1) You can trade one for an Aerodactyl, which is the only way to GET Aero
2) It evolves if you make it happy enough (to the fugly Blissey)
3) Very rarely, you'll find one with the Lucky Egg, which will increase the
experience gained in battle by 50% (I finally got one and could test it.
Sorry for the confusion.)
Skiploom and the Nidoran Pokemon are also probably new to you, so catch
them. The trainers are pretty easy at this point, so if you've got
a Pokemon with many attacks and it's about L30, bring it along. The items
all require Cut, except for the Super Rod. That you can find in a house
on Route 12.
The routes all lead to Lavender Town, but there's a path about halfway
up Route 12 (just past the Super Rod house), that leads to Route 11.
ROUTE 11
Items: Berry
Pokemon: Magnemite (MAE), Pidgeotto (MA), Rattata (MA), Hoppip (MA),
Noctowl (E), Meowth (E), Drowzee (E), Hypno (E), Snorlax (one shot)
Trainers: 4 of them
This is a rather basic route, with a new Pokemon (Hypno), the ever-exciting
Berry, and a few trainers in the mid 30's. However, there is a reason
you're here.
I could've sent you out here earlier, but Snorlax was blocking the path.
However, you've got the capability to wake it up now, with the Poke Flute
channel on your Pokegear Radio. Set the channel to 20 when you're right
next to Snorlax, save the game, then engage it.
For Snorlax, you'll want a high-leveled Pokemon with False Swipe, a
Pokemon with a good Sleep move (Jynx works well), and several Ultra Balls.
If you've got Heavy Balls, use them too. Snorlax will NEVER be at 1 HP at
the end of a round, because the big lug's holding Leftovers. So get it
worn down, bring in the Sleeper, and catch the thing. It starts at L50,
with Body Slam, Snore, Rest, and Rollout. Give it Curse, Earthquake,
Return/Double-Edge, and Rest for a hella annoying Pokemon.
Once Snorlax is gone, you can now go to Vermillion City. Do so, as you
need a Cutter for the next portion. Get a Cut Pokemon, and enter the
Diglett's Cave.
DIGLETT'S CAVE
Items: None
Pokemon: Diglett (MAE), Dugtrio (MAE)
Trainers: None
This is your first chance to catch Diglett and Dugtrio, so pick them up.
And as a special bonus, Dugtrio captured here come with Tri Attack.
Move through the cave, and you'll appear again on Route 2.
ROUTE 2
Items: Carbos, Nugget, Elixir, Dire Hit, PSNCure Berry, Max Potion
Pokemon: Pidgey (MA), Caterpie (MA), Butterfree (MA), Pikachu (MA), Ledyba
(M), Ledian (M), Pidgeotto (A), Hoothoot (E), Noctowl (E), Spinarak (E),
Ariados (E)
Trainers: 3 Bug Catchers
From the Diglett's Cave entrance, go up to the Carbos, then go down and
into the house. Talk to the man inside, and you'll get the Nugget. Leave,
and cut down the bush. Keep going south to the Elixir, then Cut down the
bush. Go up past the trainer, and into the forest. Grab all the items
as you work your way through the maze (it's a simple one). When you come
out, you'll be a short jog from Pewter City.
The Pokemon here should all be old friends, with one exception: Pikachu.
You'll need something with False Swipe to catch it, as it's L4 always.
Pick up teh rat and head into Pewter.
PEWTER CITY
Items: Silver Wing, Ice Berry, Mint Berry, Boulderbadge
Pokemon: None
Trainers: Brock, plus one jabroni trainer
Go to just before the entrance to Route 3 and you'll see an old man. Talk
to him and he'll give you the Silver Wing item. Now, who wants a Lugia?
You can get it now. The Berries are in the upper-right portion of the
city, by the old museum. As for the Gym, it's just above the Pokemon
Center. Beat the trainer, and challenge Brock.
_________________________________________________________________________
Trainer: Leader Brock
Pokemon: L41 Graveler, L41 Rhyhorn, L42 Omastar, L42 Kabutops, L44 Onix
Reward: $4200, Boulderbadge
Strategy:
Brock's team are all weak to Ground (double damage), Fighting (double
damage), and Grass (4x damage). Also, the Ground/Rocks have a 4x weakness
to Water, and a 2x weakness to Steel. And, the Water/Rocks are 2x weak
to Electric. Get the picture? Just about anything will waste him.
_________________________________________________________________________
Pick up the Boulderbadge, heal, and head east to Route 3.
ROUTE 3
Items: None
Pokemon: Rattata (MAE), Raticate (MAE), Ekans (MA), Arbok (MA), Spearow
(MA), Sandshrew (MA), Zubat (E), Clefairy (E)
Trainers: 4
Your goal is Mt. Moon, so work your way to the right, picking off trainers
and False Swiping your way to a Clefairy. Before you enter the cave itself,
make sure you've got a strong team at about L50 ready.
MT. MOON
Items: Moon Stone (Monday night ONLY)
Pokemon: Geodude (MAE), Zubat (MAE), Paras (MAE), Clefairy (MAE), Sandshrew
(MA)
Trainers: The Rival (doesn't he EVER learn?)
The second you step into the cave, the Rival will intercept you. RUMBLE!!!
_________________________________________________________________________
Trainer: Rival
Pokemon: L41 Sneasel, L41 Magneton, L42 Golbat, L43 Gengar, L43 Alakazam,
L45 starter
Reward: $4500
Strategy:
Your final forced battle with the Rival will be a replay of every other
meeting. Use Fighting moves on Sneasel, a Ground move on Magneton,
Psychic/Electric/Ice moves on Golbat, Ground/Dark/Psychic moves on
Gengar, Dark/Ghost moves on Alakazam, and whatever beats the starter.
_________________________________________________________________________
(If you go to Indigo Plateau on Monday and Wednesday, the Rival will
challenge with a team that's around L50).
After the Rival disappears, go to the right and head up the ladder. Go
outside to find a new part of Mt. Moon: There's a little souvenir shop
next to a field. On Monday nights, the Clefairy will do a little dance.
When they take off, you can use Rock Smash to get yourself a Moon Stone.
Otherwise, just take the door at the end of the path below the shop,
and hop down to Route 4.
ROUTE 4
Items: HP Up
Pokemon: Same as Route 3
Trainers: 3
You'll come out of Mt. Moon here. Go right, beat the three trainers, and
scoop up the HP Up. Now, hop into the grass and go east to Cerulean. Grab
a Fly Pokemon from the Pokemon Center, and fly back to Pewter. Then take
Route 2 to Viridian City.
VIRIDIAN CITY (Part 1)
Items: TM 42 (Dream Eater)
Pokemon: None
Trainers: 1 per day in the Trainer House
Your first stop should be the Trainer House (it's right below the Gym).
For those who have habitually used Mystery Gift, you'll be able to take
on the Pokemon that the last person you Gifted with had. (Which in my case,
was Carrie from Stadium 2's team led by Feraligatr). If you haven't Mystery
Gifted, you'll get Pokemon Trainer Cal, who uses the final forms of
Crystal's starters.
To get to Dream Eater, Surf the little pond near the Viridan Pokemon
Center. Talk to the Hiker-like guy to get the TM.
Viridian's gym is closed temporarily, so go south to Route 1.
ROUTE 1
Items: Bitter Berry
Pokemon: Rattata (MAE), Pidgey (MA), Sentret (MA), Furret (MA), Hoothoot
(E), Raticate (E)
Trainers: 2
Anyone who played the original games (RBY) knows the lay of this route.
Just go down the ledges and into Pallet Town.
PALLET TOWN
Items: None
Pokemon: None
Trainers: None
Why did I say to go into Pallet if there's nothing here? Well, Gary's
sister does Pokemon grooming if you go to her house between 3 and 4 daily.
Also, you'll have to come back here to beat the game, and it acts as a
gateway to Routes 19-21.
ROUTES 19-21
Items: Volcanobadge
Pokemon: Tangela (MAE), Mr. Mime (MA), Tentacool (MAE), Tentacruel (MAE)
Trainers: 10 Swimmers, plus Blaine in the Seafoam Gym. Also, you'll meet
Viridian's leader
Surf south from Pallet to Route 21. The grass is home to the very rare
and very disturbing Mr. Mime (which, despite the name, can be female...
stOOpid Nintendo...) Surf down to Cinnabar Island... or rather, what's
left of it. The volcano erupted, leaving a Pokemon Center and Blue,
the Viridian Leader. It's Gary from the originals, though the game calls
him Blue. Chat for a bit, and he'll Teleport away. But don't follow
him... you've got a badge in your sights.
