CLASS INFORMATION [CLSS]
______________________________________
¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
There are no "main characters" in Dragon Warrior III, just classes that the
player controls and names. Each has different abilities, spells, and things
to equip -- hello, diversity! Excluding the hero and sage, allies can be
created in Ruida's Tavern, found in Aliahan.
The personality of each individual affects the stat growth, and since a
character cannot have /no/ personality, it's rough to say be definitive on
each's stats. Still, here's the lowdown on the rundown:
HERO
¯¯¯¯
The hero is the ally the player starts as, and is always in the party, and
always male (sorry!). The son of the legendary Ortega, it's now his time to
go out into the world and slay Baramos, who's brought terror to the entire
world.

WARRIOR
¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
Powerful equipment, rippling muscles, that wanderlust look in their eye...
it can be no one other than the magnificent warrior! These party mainstays
will be great damage dealers throughout the game, and are often left
standing when the others are broken in two by powerful monsters. Magical
attacks can still deal more damage than normal if the INT stat is low,
however. Any firsttimer not hellbent on dying on the town outskirts would
do well to stick one of these guys in the party.

MAGE
¯¯¯¯
Ack, thy wizard has cast a spell on me! Mages are cursed with having lots of
spellcasting ability, and can harness many elemental and stat-buff spells to
become well-rounded. Their nadir: poor defense and equipment! Yes, for all
they're worth, they often encounter substandard equipment while everyone
else is getting by with first-rate stuff. Since there are no MP-refilling
items in the game besides the rarified Wizard Rings, these units often have
to pull their punches in long dungeons. A class to be feared and loved at
the same time. <3

CLERIC
¯¯¯¯¯¯
These lovable spellcasters are supportive and curative units, healing wounds
and getting rid of status effects. They also learn stat-buff spells such as
SpeedUp, making them useful in battle besides spreadin' the HP love around.
They can equip better things than the mages, including some swords. Making
a female cleric at the start of the game can lead to good things, equipment-
-wise (Light Dress!!). Unless the player has a head full of rocks, or just
likes wasting tons of cash on healing items, every playthrough will have at
least one of these ol' chaps. Statwise they're rather average...oh well.

FIGHTER
¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
The daring and brave fighters have so much bravado, their class doesn't even
need to equip armor or use spells! Concentrating on quick action and getting
elusive critical hits more often, they'll either win in a blaze of glory, or
go down in flames due to recklessness. Is there room in the party for one of
these lovabble lugs who're easy on the pocketbook? ^___^

¯¯¯¯¯¯
This monetary-minded class can appraise items to tell if there's odd effects

to be a bother, he's still outclassed later on by the other tank units. This
unit also appears to level-up quicker than any other...

JESTER
¯¯¯¯¯¯
This consummate goof-off seems to be the epitome of slackerdom: he excels at
nothing, neglects his in-battle duties, can't equip that many things, and is
simply deadweight in a good party. So why take one? He's the ONLY class who
can class-change to a Sage without requiring a Zen Book! Yes, this lazybones
is not without use given that there are finite Zen Books found in the game.
Still, to not be a burden on the party in the early going, mid- to late-game
is a lot better (especially with Metabble/Metaly enemies can give lots of
EXP). Jesters also get the highest Luck growth out of any class.

THIEF
¯¯¯¯¯
A thief is able to steal held items from enemies, and very quick to act in
the scheme of battle. The abilities it learns aids in dungeon-crawling, such
as telling how many items are left on the current floor or locating places
undiscovered on the overworld. In terms of damage, it's outclassed heavily,
making this unit either very useful or forgettable, depending on the player's
personality and playing type. They're still great to have when searching for
those TinyMedals y'forgot, though. >___>

SAGE
¯¯¯¯
The high wizard of spells, the Sage is the lovechild of a Cleric and Mage!
It can cast both of those classes' spells and has better overall stats and
equipment possibilities. There are two ways to get one at Dharma Temple: a
Lv20+ character with a Zen Book in the inventory changes into one, or a Lv20+
Jester decides to make the switch. Either way, this is the class all mages
wish to be -- and the more y'have, the better!

CLASS-CHANGING [CLCH]
______________________________________
¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
Dharma Temple is found north of Baharata, and the site of where units come to
change their current job. The requirements are that the unit must be LV20+.
Anyone changing classes starts at Lv1 in the new job with HALVED STATS. With
this in mind, it's obviously more beneficial to change-over at Lv99 than it
is at Lv20, at least stat-wise...but who can wait that long? Only Heroes are
unable to change classes.
Here are some examples of good combinations:
MAGE > WARRIOR = "THE TANK MAGE"
By doing this, the normally magephobic Warrior, who has no magical ability
or spells, can be a little more well-rounded than normal, and benefits from
the INT carried over. The higher the mage's level, the more MP the warrior
will have to cast spells (such as TwinHits!).
CLERIC > WARRIOR = "NURSE FIGHTER"
This is basically the flipside of the Tank Mage, in that the warrior'll be
able to cast stat-buffs when s/he needs. Having more than one healer, other
than the hero, is always a good idea. The higher the cleric's level, the
more MP to spare in this field.
JESTER > FIGHTER = "CRITICAL-HIT MACHINE"
Jesters get the highest Luck growth of any unit, and changing them into a
Fighter plays right into that classes' penchant for getting those brutal
hits. This combination makes a fighter much more potent than normal.
Experimenting with all classes, and building up those default stats higher
and higher, results in a very useful ally. The time put in will reward the
player in the long run...

Dub the main character (there is no default name) after starting a new game!
Before a quest actually begins, the hero who carries Ortega's blood will be
at a cliff, and put to the test...literally. Questions will be asked and how
the player answers them shapes the personality of the hero which, in turn,
affects how his level growth goes. The final test can be a number of things:
The hero appears in a forest, and an old man nearby wants any boulders he
may find. The more boulders brought back to him -- with d-pad -- the more
his personality is crafted. [10G] is received for each boulder, also.
The hero appears in a well-bottom as a hideous monster. After climbing out
into the night air, villagers flee and a warrior tries to slay the hero.
Burn him to a crisp and it's possible to kill other innocent villagers; it
changes his personality for the worse, however. Leaving town and keeping
all possible survivors (+ dog) changes personality for the better! ^_____^
A queen is eavesdropped on accidentally, laughing about how she's going to
send soldiers to steal jewels under the guise of self-defense. Downstairs,
the king sends the soldiers to leave. Whether the hero tells the king he's
going to assist or that he's not makes a difference, as does leaving the
castle without talking to him (apparently).
In a tavern, a person in the crowd says he's engaged to Ponny, the star
dancer onstage. However, upon asking the dancer, she says she wants to turn
him down. The reply about whether she's going to honor her promise -- Yes,
No, Huh? -- shapes the personality based on the truthfulness and cushioning
the poor guy's feelings. [Leaving prematurely affects this also].
This is just the tip of the iceberg. I suggest reading the following file to
understand how this works more clearly: tinyurl.com/2xrhoy

from the king for a journey. The player can refuse this but this means 'Hero'
can't get TRAVELING COMPANIONS! Don't do it 'less you're a professional, son.
Inside the castle, head due north until reaching the throneroom. The good
king gives permission to get allies from the local tavern, and gives items
to equip them with: a [Traveler] armor, 2 [Club]s and a [Stick]! He really
dipped into the royal treasury, huh? A [LUCKseed] can be found in one of the
SW drawers also, while an [Antidote] can be found in an unlocked SE room on
the first floor.
Back in town, return to Hero's home and search an F1 barrel for [Herb], and
grampa's bureau for [5G]. Social security is pretty poor 'round here... >__>
Okay, time to get some compatriots at the tavern. En route, make sure to get
the [25G] hidden in a barrel right next to the building; go counterclockwise
around the back to get it! Inside, head upstairs to the registrar who creates
new allies. Building a well-rounded party is essential for easier progression,
so the big three are: Warrior, Mage, Cleric. That's suggested by an NPC, too,
and I agree.
During creation, seeds can be given to improve stats on the characters. This
is so the player isn't slighted too bad by the randomized stats. The ally's
personality is determined afterward, though, and is partially created based
on the character's statbuild. Once made, they can be obtained down at the
tavern's F1. I named my characters Deke, Glas, and Hana, after the assassins
in Fear Effect. >___>

A Token is needed to play the game, and there have been two so far: one in
Romaly Castle's NE tower, and another in Romaly Town where the dog has been
searching during the day.
The object is to make it to the END (a.k.a. Goal) Tile from the starting
space. Dice rolls determine how far the player moves, but the player decides
which path to take at bifurcations and such. Moving backwards is impossible,
so checking the map beforehand is necessary. Lastly, to land on the END tile,
an exact roll is needed!

This traveler's track is for beginners, so it's incredibly easy to proceed

2nd hidden room with the stairs to 4F. From here, it's straightforward so I
won't make more maps for 'em.
Keep climbing until some goons spot the heroes and flee to the upper floor,
where Kantar steals the items and throws everyone in a trapdoor. Climb back
up and jump over the edge, which will catch up to the larceny-commitin' foes.

Fight this battle without a good strategy and they're going to be puttin'
the party in pine boxes pretty quickly. Have the Cleric cast Surround on
the Goons to lower their physical accuracy (hopefully), and have the Mage
use Increase to raise everyone's DEF. Kandar himself only physically
attacks, and so do his goons, so this should potentially reduce the damage
per turn. Concentrate on one goon at a time, then go for Kandar, who is
susceptible to the Cleric's Sap (DEF-down) spell, which should allow any
fighter to flay him alive. Keep casting Increase if needed, which can put
the boss' damage in the single-digit range. [Note: Goons do not get entered
in the Medal Album at this time].
---
Afterwards, pick up the [Crown] and have the Hero use Return to go to Romaly
Castle; or, use a WarpWing to the same effect. Our hero can become the King
of Romaly for awhile, but can't buy/sell items or leave. Talk to the old
majesty downstairs in the battle stadium to give up the ruse and get back on
the real journey.
If y'haven't been to Noaniels [WK10] and looted the place do that before
moving west. In the far forest clearing, the town of Elvenham is located.
Too bad everyone puts up a front and there's nothing much to do there yet
(except get a TinyMedal, but we can put that off for now since it affects
nothing). But if you want to...

Upon entering this dank dungeon, continue down the dirty corridor, stepping

Going clockwise around the small spring here leads to a free healing spot,
which is where y'want to be for easier training (recommended btw). Further
west and north is the next screen -- the two small rooms at the NW/NE ends
have a [Spear] and [STRseed] to stick in yer bag. Afterward, search out the
large room's SW room for the "F" exit.
Continue to the bifurcation and choose south; one of the rooms contains the
[Rosary] accessory which gives DEF +4 and changes the personality to Romantic.
Return back to the fork, ignoring the "G" path which leads nowhere in
particular, and reach the western reaches of this floor. The far SW chest in
a separate screen has [224G], while there's a [Token] to get SE from there
(err...look at the map for bearings). Once the Token is found, hug the east
wall until it goes north, leading to the hidden room with a [Leather] Dress

This leads to the lowest extremes of this dump, where a [DreamRuby] and note

(or backtrack old-school-style) and visit Elvenham in the clearing NW of this

there is an order involved; fail and it's fall-in-hole | 15 | TinyMedal |_|

| 17 | Flashy Suit |_|

| 19 | Golden Claw |_|
The cavern will rumble and the two aforementioned items ¯¯¯¯ ¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
can be collected from the middle room. At this point, take the "E"/"D" stair
on either upper corner of this floor to the next-highest. The MagicKey allows
the gray door to be opened and the huge stack of treasure chests're up for
grabs. Note that a MummyMan x4 battle takes place EACH TIME before pocketing
the items, so get the essentials first and maybe come back later. Surround &
Increase will help a lot here (Expel, too, if you like). When done, take the
"F" stair to the [Flashy] Suit, followed by the "G" stair on the pyramid's
slanted roof. Carefully walk left and up, searching the last tile for the
21st [TinyMedal]! Fall off the edge to return to the world map.

Now, there's one more secret to find here. Remember the dungeon area where
y'can fall through the first screen's pitfalls? Magic use is prohibited here,
but with the MagicKey, the [Golden] Claw can be obtained. BRING HEALING ITEMS

You'll see this immediately as y'can't take three steps without having to put
some bodies in the ground... Throwing it away gets rid of the curse, if you
don't want to face the annoyance of a 2-step battle system, but it's the only
one in the game, so... Either way, make sure to kill Mummys first, as they
can call Horks for help, and those guys can lay the damage on pretty thick...
Y'can always reset and hope for battles with just 2 KingToad/Shadowers, too.
(NOTE: Apparently walking on skeletons lets an extra step be taken without a

To leave, backtrack to the previous room where the "H" stairway is, just off
the SW room in this dump... The 'curse' from now on will now affect the team
in the same way, unless equipped I guess...

This tiny kingdom doesn't have much to offer, really. Talk to the king to
learn he will give the team a ship in exchange for pepper. And...wait, did
he say Pepper? What a dunce! His friend Norud the Hobbit lives in the cave
east of Ashalam, and will guide everyone through the cave. A [Letter] will
clarify the situation when the time comes.
---
Before leaving, let's pillage this place. The castle has a [VITseed], [Tattoo]
and [Mist] Rod. Back in town, enter the apartment NW of the shop area and dig
in a hanging sack for a [STRseed]. The horsepen nearby has a [TinyMedal] in a
NE bush.
The last place is harder to find on yer own. Locate the old man north of the
shop area. Go east as if leaving to the world map, but instead, go north a
bit and wind back east, through the top of the map. After going behind the
castle, it leads to a waterfront house with a [TinyMedal] and [Tragic] Book
to loot. Not bad, eh?
Oh, and there's a [Token] in the inn's dresser drawer. Yay. Don't bother
buying any crap in Portoga (except for Black Clothes if anyone can equip)

of Baharata across the bridge, turning NE. Ignore the |_________________|
leading to Kandar's old cave and keep going to the next
riverside; take the brown foothills west and up. The place in question looks
like a gigantic castle. [NOTE: Once visited, the temple'll appear on the
'Return' list, so using the ship to access it is not necessary as it follows
during warps.]
There is an inn here, luckily, and a sage who can change the classes. If the
character in question in Lv20, the change can be done. Not Lv20? Metaly foes
around this place have 4 HP, really high defense, and drop 1000+ EXP for each
character...should help the process.
A few notes on class-changing:
- The Hero cannot change classes
- Character retains all abilities/magic
- Character starts at Lv01 with halved stats from previous class
- Changing class at Lv20 IS NOT NECESSARY, but does make allies more rounded

So where's Lancel? Simple! Warp to Baharata, board the boat near the eastern
bridge, exit to the vast ocean, and go straight south. Check the map and see
that semi-large island shaped like Australia? That's the one. Lancel's the
only town on that floatin' speck.

|¯| TEMPLE |3|
|¯|__| |____|¯|__| |__|¯| This "tiny village" seems very tiny, until

| |_____________| |_____
|_____________________ | First, explore the large house in town to find
| | [5G] and a [Token] around the normal hiding

| |¯¯¯¯¯| |¯¯¯| |¯¯¯| | say to buy some Hide Herbs from her father as
| | 1 2 | | | | | | they'll come in handy. The slime in the west
| |_____| |___| |___| | dead-end alley of the temple also says this

| |¯ ¯| | castle somewhere. DO THIS!!! They're 300G.

Harrumph...everyone hear will treat the heroes as bumpkins/hicks...serves 'em
right...so right in fact, that we're going to rob them blind! The gate guard
will not allow the team inside, so use a Hide Herb from Lancel to get inside.
Search the upper-right F1 room to find the royals' chambers, with goodies to
take: [Party] Dress, [Dandy] Suit, and a [Lady] Book! Check the door leading
outside -- near stairway to throne -- to find an outdoor garden.

Now, find the down-stairway on the castle's F1 interior to find the much-
-lauded boulder puzzle. Apparently no one is smart enough to solve it! Here
is how to do it:
