Here is the trading sequence up through the bananas:
1. Acquire Yoshi Doll from the Crane Game
2. Give Yoshi to Mamahl in Mabe village, in the big house just West of the Dream Shrine in exchange for the ribbon.
3. Give the ribbon to the little bow-wow in the doghouse just to the right of Madame Bow-wow's house in exchange for the dog food.
4. Give the dog food to Sale at Sale's house of Bananas on the beach (next to the coconut throwing monkey) in exchange for bananas.

statusThese are a step in a long trading sequence. It starts with getting the Yoshi Doll from the crane game, then you'll give it to a person in Mabe Village, a baby or something I think. Then you'll get a ribbon, which you need to give to bowwow in Mabe. The dog food you get then will give you the bananas when you trade it with the crocodile on the beach to the south.
