Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? 2nd Edition
Review by ohnoitschris
"Funny how they make bad games that milk popular franchises."
For everyone who read my first WWTBAM review, I'm sincerely sorry. That was my first review, so please forgive me for any IQ lost, money wasted, or anger caused.
Anywho, Who Wants To Be a Millionaire for the GameBoy Colour is one of those games that seems like a bargain game, but isn't. Elements such as a long opening, more than 2 company logos (Who the heck is anyway?), and a flashy intro movie that leads to an ugly title screen are generally bad things.
Graphics:
The FMVs (Yes, FMVs in a GameBoy Colour game!) are flashy, nonetheless. Of course, since they're in a GBC cart, they're short, horrible quality, and two exist. The text in the main game seems crunched down, and is rather... ugly. For a trivia game, you can't really have much to look at, and WWTBAM knows it well.
Sound:
Decent. The Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? theme is all there, along with the Hot Seat music, and of course, the music that plays at the end of a game. The sound effects are as generic as you can get. Beep, and boop. Nothing more.
Gameplay:
Anyone who is reading this review has likely seen the popular TV show of yesteryear, so you know what to expect. Regis asks you multiple choice questions, you use your lifelines, you win a cheque, and you go home with money. Only in the GameBoy version, you basically exchange that for an opportunity to win fake cheques and play as much as you want. Unfortunately, the game becomes literally unplayable after a while. Questions start to repeat, the process gets repetitive, and the game quickly winds up on the shelf.
Buy? Rent?:
Unless you can play this game for free, don't even bother looking at the price tag. I like to think of this game as a big loaf of bread that never ends. It's yummy at first, but as time passes it gets stale, and useless. You wind up throwing it out the window and hurting someone.
Summary:
Fans of the show will like it for a few games. Trivia fans will like it for a few more games than fans of the show, and people who hate Regis Phillbin and the show will want to burn it. Save your money, save your bandwidth, save your time. Overall, don't bother.
