Donkey Kong Country
Review by Viper_Diamond
"Good. Maybe not as good graphics as SNES, but it's still very good."
So, this Christmas I've gotten a slew of games...so many it isn't even funny. 14 counting ones I got with Christmas money. That's a lot. Don't ask me how I'm even finding time with any of them...but, with the spread out time between all of them, this is one of my favorite games I got. It was great on the SNES, and now it's on the GBC. And, we have the added bonus of trying to find if The Lost World is in this or if they took it out. If they took that world out I'm gonn-...OH! Yes. Back to the review...
Graphics: 9
Great graphics for GBC. Sure, they aren't as bright and pretty as SNES. Sure they got toned down to 4 colors for DK and Diddy. Sure. But they look very good, and the background is great. Main reason this is just a 9, is because that when Diddy wins or loses a minigame, and he does his little jump around thing, that looks much more cartoony than the rest of the game. I also just wish that we could have given DK and Diddy a bit more color. But, that would make the framerates even worse in parts...
Music: 10
This is some of the better music I've heard on GBC. From the moodyness of some, to the light heartedness of others, it's all great and detailed sounding. Some music is a lot better than others (like the music for the temple levels...love that music), but overall it's all great.
Sound Effects: 4
Meh...It's not so much of the sound effects being crappy how they sound, but the sound effects being crappy. Okay...that doesn't even make sense, darn it...Okay. I mean that the sound effects don't sound any better or worse than on the SNES version, but I hated the sound effects there as well as here. What do I hate so much? That stupid sound that the DK Barrels make when you don't have your friend with you. Ugh, drives me crazy...Sometimes I just pick them up and throw them so I don't have to hear that stupid sound...ugh. *barf*
Difficulty: 10
This is very hard to beat. It took me quite awhile to just beat it normally, then I am still going back to get all the barrel minigames done, then I'm trying to beat the levels on the different modes, which you can turn the DK barrels off or the Checkpoint barrels off. Either way provides hours of gaming...well, it's not so fun to have those off...torture? Yes. Hours of gaming torture await you with the barrels turned off.
Fun: 8
(the reason I'm doing this catagory is because the DKC board seems to be getting loads of questions of ''Should I buy this'' and ''is this fun'' etc.) This is very fun, especially with the different forms you can turn into. Very enjoyable until you get to certain levels which are near impossible. Those are...very...nerverecking to say the least...
Overall: 9
Trust me, if you have a SNES, just get the DKC on there. But if you don't, get this. A major gripe though is the fact that when you have several moving sprites onscreen it can feel like you are treading in peanut butter. Really, the framerates can be horrid. But not too often. Just kill every Kremling you run into and you shouldn't have much of that problem. This game will sap away your time. Very so. But it's worth it. Get this game. You'll be glad you did.
